Classification by aspect. Ph. 2, Classification by what is explained. Ph. 3, Classification by what is expressed. Ph. 1, The first is: Also, from the aspect of function, extensively collecting, Profoundly differentiating, arranging what is disordered, these are three. Furthermore, if treatises are classified by the aspect of their function, it is taught that there are three types: treatises that extensively collect, treatises that profoundly differentiate, and treatises that arrange disordered topics in order. Among these: the first is like the *Abhidharma-kośa*; the second is like the *Abhisamayālaṃkāra*; the third is like the *Sūtrālaṃkāra*. Ph. 2, The second [classification by what is explained] is: General and specific commentaries on what is to be explained, And the distinct views and conduct of the three Dharma Wheels. If treatises are classified by the aspect of the explained teachings, there are two types: general commentaries on the Buddha's teachings, and specific commentaries. The first (general commentaries) include grammars like Kaccayana, and treatises on epistemology (Pramāṇa) like the Seven Treatises (of Dharmakīrti), and so forth. As for the second (specific commentaries), there are many distinct types of commentaries on the views and conduct of the three Dharma Wheels: Regarding commentaries on the view aspect of the First Dharma Wheel: the seven Abhidharma sections of the Śrāvakas, the Mahāvibhāṣā (Great Commentary on Differentiating Particulars), and condensed meanings of these, like the *Abhidharma-kośa*, and so forth. Regarding commentaries on the conduct aspect: the *Vinayasūtra*, the Ma-tog Phreng-rgyud (Garland of Flowers Tantra), and so forth. Regarding commentaries on the view aspect of the Middle Dharma Wheel: those that clarify the stages of directly taught emptiness, such as the Six Collections of Mādhyamika Reasonings (Madhyamaka Yuktiṣaṭka), and those that clarify the stages of hidden meaning (Abhidharma) realization, such as the *Abhisamayālaṃkāra*, and so forth. Regarding commentaries on the conduct aspect: the *Śikṣāsamuccaya* (Compendium of Training), and so forth. Regarding commentaries on both view and conduct: the *Bodhicaryāvatāra* (A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life), and so forth. Regarding commentaries on the view aspect of the Last Dharma Wheel: the *Sūtrālaṃkāra* and the two classifications (Viniścaya), the *Uttaratantra* (Ratnagotravibhāga), and so forth. Regarding commentaries on the conduct aspect: the *Viṃśatikā* (Twenty Verses on Vows), and so forth. Ph. 3, The third [classification by what is expressed/topic] is: What is expressed: as many as exist (conventional truth) and how it exists (ultimate truth), Those that primarily teach liberation and omniscience. Treatises are divided into three types according to their expressed topic: those that teach conventional truth (as many as exist), those that teach ultimate truth (how it exists), and those that teach liberation and omniscience. As many as exist (conventional truth)

Regarding the expounder, there are two types: ordinary and supreme. The former refers to treatises on worldly conduct, etc., and the latter refers to treatises on the five major sciences. Among these, those expounding the inner science (Buddhist philosophy) include treatises such as the "Analysis of the Five Aggregates." Those expounding reality as it is (suchness) include "Distinguishing the Two Truths," "Thirty Verses," "Madhyamaka Ornament," etc. Those expounding liberation and omniscience include "Bodhisattva Bhumis" (Bodhisattva Grounds), "Ornament of Realization" (Abhisamayālaṃkāra), etc. P5 The fifth section, an incidental explanation of what to adopt and what to abandon: The treatises by the Lords of the Ten Bhumis, the Six Ornaments, and others, Should be accepted and revered like the commands of the Victorious One (Buddha). The old Tibetan treatises (98b) are also exceptionally distinguished. In this era of the waning of the Dharma, due to people's meager merit and wisdom, they prioritize treatises over the Buddha's teachings. Furthermore, they prioritize Tibetan treatises over Indian treatises, and among these, they gradually consider later treatises to be more important than earlier ones. Among the words in this world, the most supreme and excellent are the precious scriptures of the Victorious One (Buddha). Even if one does not understand their meaning, merely reciting the words possesses immeasurable blessings and benefits. Therefore, they should be cherished like one's own life. Following these, the five treatises of Maitreya, the three cycles of mind commentaries, and other works by the Lords of the Ten Bhumis; also the undoubtedly Vajra speech of the Second Buddha, Padmākara (Padmasambhava); the Four Great Commentators (Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, Asanga, Vasubandhu), who are among the Six Ornaments (Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, Asanga, Vasubandhu, Dignaga, Dharmakirti) that adorn Jambudvīpa, and others; the Two Supreme Masters (Gunaprabha, Sakyaprabha); the Six Great Scholars; and the undoubted treatises composed by great accomplished masters such as Jowo Je (Atiśa) and Abhayākara (Abhayākaragupta), should also be revered like the Buddha's commands. In Tibet, the treatises by the great translators of the Early Propagation (Nyingma) and the great chariots of explanation and practice of the Later Propagation (Sar_ma) that are impartial are also exceptionally distinguished. Therefore, they should be viewed as consistent with the undisputed Indian treatises and accepted with delight. However, the Indian treatises composed by ordinary Panditas and the Tibetan treatises compiled by those with one-sided views, Especially the later debaters, those whose wisdom is deluded but who parrot (teachings) out of mere obligation, and those who are partisan supporters of their respective religious schools...
