And its causes are held to be nine. As it occurs. Moreover, if considered in terms of the individuals to be disciplined (i.e., sentient beings), there are definitely two kinds: those who have entered the Great Vehicle and those who have entered the Small Vehicle. Therefore, they are also encompassed by the Bodhisattva Piṭaka and the Śrāvakapiṭaka. The aforementioned three Piṭakas are each further divided into two: those taught for the sake of those who are inclined towards the inferior (capacities), and those taught for the sake of those who are inclined towards the vast (teachings) (95b). This is the distinction. Regarding this, Asanga (Thogs med zhabs) stated: “These three themselves, by the distinction of the Small Vehicle and the Supreme Vehicle, become two: namely, the Śrāvakapiṭaka and the Bodhisattva Piṭaka.” As it was said. P3. Third, [Division based on the mode of expression]: Merely by the mode of expression, the Victor's word, Sūtra, Geya, Vyākaraṇa, Gāthā, Udāna, Nidāna, Avadāna, Itivṛttaka, Jātaka, Vaipulya, Adbhutadharma, Upadeśa, Are divided into the twelvefold scripture. If divided merely by the mode or manner of expression, the words of the Victor are appropriately divided into the twelvefold scriptural divisions. Among these, first, the Sūtra division (Mdo'i sde) is: As it is explained, in “conditioned and unconditioned phenomena clearly distinguished,” that which is concisely explained in prose sentences is a Sūtra. This is a sacred text that succinctly teaches the meaning in prose through an expository style. In the *Compendium of Abhidharma* (Kun btus), it is stated that there are ten benefits when taught in an expository style: The summary is: Easy to establish and explain and grasp, With reverence, accumulation of merit perfected, dharma-nature realized, Faith in the Three Jewels attained, Abiding in present happiness, able to converse eloquently. Thus it is. Second, the Geya division (Dbyangs kyis bsnyad pa'i sde) is: Those explanations given in verse song in the middle or at the end of the Sūtra division itself, and those Sūtras of provisional meaning (drang ba'i don gyi mdo sde) which require further examination. Third, the Vyākaraṇa division (Lung du bstan pa'i sde) is: Those predictions of the past and future lives of Śrāvakas and others, and specifically, those Sūtras of definitive meaning (nges don gyi mdo sde) that clearly reveal the intended meaning. Fourth, the Gāthā division (Tshigs su bcad pa'i sde) is: Verses from the second line to the sixth...

...those that are taught. The "Unsolicited Teachings" section: refers to those teachings that appear to have been delivered spontaneously out of joy, without being entreated by others. (folio 96 recto) The "Occasion" section: refers to those teachings delivered for the sake of specific individuals, and those precepts taught along with their circumstances. The "Analogies" section: refers to those teachings delivered with analogies. As stated in the "Second Scroll": "In order to enable those who hear the Dharma to understand and realize it, examples are drawn from other previously established occurrences, and analogies are extensively presented; therefore, it is called the 'Analogies' section." The "Past Events" section: refers to those teachings that relate past narratives and so forth. The "Jātaka" section: refers to those teachings that illustrate the conduct of Bodhisattvas, such as the *Jātaka of All-Liberation*. The "Extensive" section (Vaipulya): refers to those teachings that exclusively expound the Bodhisattva Piṭaka of the Mahāyāna. This is also called the "Thoroughly Grinding" section or the "Peerless" section. Moreover, in the *Compendium of Abhidharma* (Abhidharmasamuccaya) it is stated: "Because it is for the benefit and well-being of all sentient beings, and because it expounds the Dharma in its extensive, vast, and profound aspects." "Why is it called 'Thoroughly Grinding'? Because it thoroughly grinds away all obscurations. Why is it called 'Peerless'? Because it has no equal." The "Marvelous" section: refers to those teachings that present the wondrous and marvelous Dharma, such as the wisdom, miraculous powers, and blessings of Śrāvakas, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas. The "Analysis" section: refers to those teachings where the characteristics of all phenomena are definitively established as they are, and the meaning of the Sūtra Piṭaka and so forth is clearly expounded. Thus, if these twelve branches of the scriptures are individually categorized into the previously explained piṭakas, it should be understood as follows: The five sections from the "Sūtra" section up to the "Unsolicited Teachings" section constitute the Śrāvaka Sūtra Piṭaka. Then, the four sections beginning with the "Occasion" section and so forth, constitute the Vinaya Piṭaka (folio 96 verso). Among these, the first (the Occasion section, which includes the Prātimokṣa) is primary because it teaches transgressions and precepts, while the latter ones are its retinues. Thereafter, the two sections including the "Extensive" section and so forth, constitute the Bodhisattva Sūtra Piṭaka. Contemplation...
