Therefore. Abandon doubtful conduct and wrong views. Why are these three Pitakas established in this way? Because the main things to be abandoned by those who seek liberation are three: doubting the higher path, having wrong conduct on one's own path, and holding wrong views. Therefore, as antidotes to these, the three Pitakas of Sutra, Vinaya, and Abhidharma were taught. The first Pitaka (Sutra Pitaka) is taught to resolve any doubts one may have about a particular matter. The second (Vinaya Pitaka), by prohibiting blameworthy conduct such as accumulating possessions due to craving and desire, avoids the extreme of clinging to desires in alms. When blameless possessions are obtained through pure morality without attachment, even clothes worth hundreds or thousands are permitted, thereby avoiding the extreme of self-mortification. Thus, it teaches the conduct that avoids both extremes. The third Pitaka (Abhidharma Pitaka) is taught to correctly explain the specific and general characteristics of all phenomena. Alternatively, for the explanation of Dharma, the practice of Dharma, and the discussion of Dharma, The three Pitakas are established, considering the needs of sentient beings. The Great Vehicle and Small Vehicle are encompassed within two Pitakas. The reason for definitely having three Pitakas is that they are taught sequentially for the purpose of explaining the meaning of Dharma, practicing the meaning of Dharma, and establishing discussions on the meaning of Dharma. Thus, the three Pitakas are established. Regarding 'Dharma' and 'meaning': From the commentary on the Sutra-alaṁkāra, names, words, and letters are called 'Dharma.' The aggregates, elements, and sense bases, which are expressed by them, are called 'meaning.' Alternatively, the aggregates, elements, sense bases, and so on, are called 'Dharma.' The four intentions and four implied meanings are called 'meaning.' Alternatively, the ten virtues, which are the cause for attaining higher realms, are called 'Dharma.' The thirty-seven factors of enlightenment and so on, which are the cause for attaining nirvana, are called 'meaning.' And so it is explained. Considering these points, in the Sutra-alaṁkāra, it is said: 'The Pitakas can be three or two, Because they are encompassed.'
