Regarding their meaning, the trainings also become nine. Because the three Pitakas are taught to be divided into nine sub-categories such as the Vinaya's Vinaya, the Vinaya's Sutra Pitaka, and so on. Therefore, it is asserted that the three trainings, when considered in terms of their attained meaning, also become nine through sub-division. Thus, the Vinaya Pitaka primarily teaches the training in ethical conduct, starting with: the Vinaya's Vinaya (the detailed and naturally established categories of rules); the Vinaya's Sutra Pitaka (the stages for engaging in meditation and pure conduct as yoga); and the Vinaya's Abhidharma (extensive explanations and divisions of these topics), and so on. The Sutra Pitaka primarily teaches the training in mind, consisting of: the Sutra's Vinaya (the establishment of the Bodhisattva vows and their assemblies); the Sutra's Sutra (profound and extensive meditative concentrations); and the Sutra's Abhidharma (all the myriad classifications of grounds, paths, dharanis, and meditative concentrations), and so on. The Abhidharma Pitaka primarily teaches the training in wisdom, consisting of: the Abhidharma's Vinaya (subduing afflictions through easy and effortless means); the Abhidharma's Sutra (the ocean-like method of entering into reality); and the Abhidharma's Abhidharma (aggregates, elements, sense bases, faculties, consciousness, etc.), as well as the complete divisions of the naturally pure Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-nature), and so on. Furthermore, for Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Mantra, there are nine Pitakas. Adorned with mere names, superior meanings, and profound expressions. In addition to what has just been explained, there are other ways to classify the three Pitakas: three (Pitakas) categorized under the Hinayana Pratimoksha; three (Pitakas) categorized under the Mahayana Bodhisattva; and three (Pitakas) categorized under the Secret Mantra Vajrayana, thus totaling nine Pitakas. These are, in order, the Vinaya, Sutra, and Abhidharma Pitakas, which are merely outer scriptures by name; and the scriptures that teach the three higher trainings are also called 'superior' in terms of their meaning; those that teach profound inner meanings are the inner scriptures, adorned with terms like 'profound Vinaya,' and so on. Vinaya and Sutra, externally known, Are means for Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas to attain results. The profound Sutra, Vinaya, and Abhidharma, (incomplete)

The practitioner will become a Bodhisattva. Thus, etc., it arises, and the meaning intended by the Second Buddha Rangjung Zhab is also correct. Sutra, Vinaya, Abhidharma are explained by four reasons each. The names Sutra, Vinaya, Abhidharma, when considered according to their definitions, are thus stated because they each possess four reasons. Among these, what is called "Sutra" is Sūtra, which refers to the exposition of the summary of meaning, There are also four types: As stated in the Sutra Ornament (Sūtrālaṃkāra): Because it expounds the locations and characteristics, And the dharmas and meanings, it is a Sutra. As it appears, by expounding where it was taught and for whom, it is "location"; by expounding the characteristics of relative truth and ultimate truth, it is "characteristics"; by expounding aggregates, elements, sense-fields, and so forth, it is "dharmas"; by revealing profound intended meanings, it is "meanings". What is called "Vinaya" is Vinaya, as stated in the Sutra Ornament (Sūtrālaṃkāra): Because it explains downfalls and their arising, And definite emergence and persons, And precepts and their distinctions, And precise determinations, it is Vinaya. This is explained by two sets of four: Downfalls refer to the five categories of downfalls. That from which these downfalls arise are: ignorance, heedlessness, abundant afflictions, disrespect, and so forth. The recovery from these downfalls is the restoration of the mind that has abandoned (the transgression). The definite emergence from downfalls is the undertaking of the karma of cessation, as well as subsequent permission, lenient treatment, becoming a basis, correct individual discernment, and the attainment of dharmata. Thus, these four points are for the purpose of Vinaya, or because they explain the person upon whom the precepts are based, the precepts themselves, their detailed classification, and the precise determination of downfalls and non-downfalls, thus expounding four types. What is called "Abhidharma" is Abhi, as stated in the Sutra Ornament (Sūtrālaṃkāra): Because it is for direct realization and repeatedly, And for overpowering and realizing, it is Abhidharma. As it states, it is thus explained by four reasons: for the purpose of expounding truths directed towards Nirvana and so forth; for the purpose of repeatedly expounding each dharma, such as material and immaterial, after detailed differentiation; for the purpose of overpowering opponents; and for the purpose that by this, the meaning of the Sutras can be understood.
