The primary cause and condition arose depending on the perfectly enlightened Buddha. Similarly, concerning its definition, it is 'well-spoken' (Subhāṣita). In the *Vyakhyāyukti* (Treatise on Explanation) it says: 'Because it is taught correctly, without error, it is well-spoken.' Its meaning is also taught in the sutras in the manner of: 'The holy Dharma is excellent in the beginning, excellent in the middle, excellent in the end; excellent in meaning, excellent in words; unmixed, perfectly complete, perfectly pure, perfectly clear.' Similarly, Ācārya Asaṅga said: 'Excellent in the beginning, means it generates great delight in the listeners.' 'Excellent in the middle, means practitioners diligently relying on the Middle Way, having completely abandoned the two extremes with little effort.' 'Excellent in the end, is because it is utterly stainless, utterly accomplished, free from attachment to everything (p. 92, verso), and it culminates in utter freedom from attachment.' 'Excellent in meaning, is because it is endowed with benefit and happiness.' 'Excellent in words, is because its collection of names, etc., are well-arranged, and its verbal articulation is complete.' 'Unmixed, means it is not common with external schools (outsiders).' 'Perfectly complete, is because it is immeasurable, thus it is the supreme of all.' 'Perfectly pure, is naturally liberated.' 'Perfectly clear/accomplished, is the complete liberation of the mental continuum.' Chapter 2: Four divisions. 1. Division based on the primary cause. 2. Division based on the expressed object. 3. Division based on the expressing agent. 4. Division based on the sequence of faculties. 1. The first is: The primary cause is that which is spoken from the Buddha's mouth, and the blessings and authorization of body, speech, and mind. Although there are many ways to classify the Tathāgata's scriptures, if classified from the perspective of the speaker's (master's) cause, there are three: the spoken word from the mouth, the blessed word, and the authorized word. The first, like the *Samādhirāja-sūtra* (Sutra of the King of Samadhi), demonstrates the manner in which the Bhagavān himself spoke from his glorious being. The second, Ācārya Siṃhabhadra explained as the three blessings of body, speech, and mind. (To be continued)

Furthermore, the teaching blessed by the body, that is, after placing the hand on the crown of Vajragarbha and bestowing blessings, the courage to expound the Daśabhūmika Sūtra arose, similar to what Vimukticandra inquired. The teaching blessed by speech, that is, when it was commanded to Mañjuśrī, "Relieve Ajātaśatru's regret," then Mañjuśrī removed Ajātaśatru's regret, similar to the sūtra that arose from it. The teaching blessed by mind, that is, after the Bhagavan (Blessed One) resided in the samādhi of profound appearance and blessed Śāriputra and Avalokiteśvara, the Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya Sūtra (Heart Sutra) was taught, similar to that. Furthermore, from the emanation of blessing rays spontaneously accomplishing virtuous qualities and enlightened activities, the Tathāgata appears and teaches the Dharma, as explained in the introduction to the Hundred Thousand Sūtras; and like the sound of Dharma arising from mountains, trees, birds, lotuses, great drums, and so forth; also, those Śrāvakas who preach Dharma through the power of blessings, and men, women, boys, and girls, and so on, who preach Dharma through the power of great enlightened activities, these are also categorized as: From the Saṃgraha: However many Śrāvakas of the Victorious One teach the Dharma, And speak with explanation and reason, And achieve the supreme, exalted happiness and its results, All of these are also due to the power of the Tathāgata. Why is this? Whatever Dharma the Victorious One taught, The supreme among men, together with their disciples, first studied it, And having realized it, teach it just as it was learned. This is done by the power of the Buddha, not by their own strength. Thus it is said. Therefore, in the context of the Nyingma Terma, all that arises from the yellow paper (śog ser) signs, pure visions (dag snang), and the wisdom of intent (dgongs pa'i rtsal) of the incarnate noble Tertöns, is also established as valid (pramāṇa) by these scriptural and logical reasonings. Third, the compilers of the teachings, arranged introductions (glen gzhi) at the beginning, connections (mtshams sbyor) in the middle, and conclusions (mthun 'gyur) and so forth at the end. From the Mahākaruṇāpuṇḍarīka Sūtra (White Lotus of Great Compassion): Ānanda, when those bhikṣus ask you thus, you should answer thus: "Thus have I heard, at one time."
