Extremely gentle and pleasing to the ear. Makes body and mind content, and the heart joyful. Produces bliss, utterly free from suffering. What is to be known and understood is clear. Allows all that is pleasing and worthy of joy to be known. Cognition is in accord with reason, without the fault of repetition. The sound of a lion, elephant, dragon, and Naga king. The melody of a Gandharva and Kalavinka. The sound of Brahma and the Jivajivaka bird. Possesses sound, melody, and fame. Not arrogant like the sound of a god-king's drum. Not high or low, all sounds are harmonious. Without omission, without anything lacking. Not inferior, not weak, pervasive and comprehensive. Continuous and connected, all sounds complete. Satisfies the senses, without blemish. Unchanging, undisturbed, renowned throughout. Endowed with all supreme aspects. Thus. Second, the detailed explanation has two parts: 1. The Word (Buddha's teaching), and 2. Treatises. First (the Word) has two parts: 1. Nature, and 2. Classification. The first (nature) is: Proclaims the Three Trainings, words and phrases are stainless. Possesses the three valid cognitions, virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end. So it is. In this regard, the nature of the Word is: the expressed meaning proclaims the Three Trainings; the expressive words and phrases are stainless; the means of establishment possesses the three valid cognitions; and the result is virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end. Lord Maitreya (91b) said: Proclaims the Three Trainings, words and phrases are stainless. Possesses the three valid cognitions, virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end. That which is greatly taught is the Word of the Victorious One. The opposite should be known as the treatises of others. Thus it is said. In the Vinaya-Avadāna (Commentary on the Vinaya), it is stated: Skillfully teaches the three trainings, Rightly endowed with the three Dharma seals. Virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end, The wise realize it as the speech of the Buddha. As it is said. Here, the three valid cognitions are: direct perception, inference, and valid scriptural testimony. Alternatively, in the Ratnagotravibhaga (Mahayana-Uttaratantra-Shastra) it is stated: That which is closely connected with meaningful Dharma, Proclaims that which eradicates all defilements from the three realms, That which demonstrates the benefits of peace, That is the speech of the Sage (Buddha); the opposite is other. As such, the expressed meaning is closely connected with meaningful Dharma; its function is to be a means to eradicate the defilements of the three realms; and its result is speech that inclines towards and flows into peaceful nirvana.
