The particle "bya" (་བྱ།) is connected by the connective particle "ste" (སྟེ་) to the remaining part. \t\t\tChapter 2: The second part [Elaborate Explanation of its Meaning] has three sections: 1. Nature; 2. Etymology; 3. Divisions. \t\t\t1. Firstly, it is: \t\t\tThe nature is the antidote to obscurations, the side of virtue. \t\t\tThe nature of the Sacred Dharma is, as it is said: \t\t\tAll sufferings, \t\t\tAnd the Sacred Dharma that dispels all obscurations. \t\t\tAs indicated by this, if one properly focuses upon it, it is a quality that serves as an antidote to exhaust the obscurations of sentient beings, turning towards the side of virtue. \t\t\tThe examples are: the uncontaminated Dharmas (truths) encompassed by cessation and path, and the authentic scriptures (Buddha's words) and commentaries. Of these, the former are the expressed referents, and the latter are the modes of expression. \t\t\t2. The second [Etymology] is: \t\t\tThe etymology of the word Dharma holds ten meanings. \t\t\tThe etymology of what is called "Chos" (Dharma) in Sanskrit (ལེགས་སྦྱར་གྱི་སྐད་དུ།) is derived from the verbal root "ḍu dhṛñ" (ཌུདྷྲྀཉ྄, Sanskrit Devanagari: डु धृञ्, Sanskrit Romanization: ḍu dhṛñ, literal Chinese meaning: to hold/support), from which the word "dharma" (ངྷརྨ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: धर्म, Sanskrit Romanization: dharma, literal Chinese meaning: Dharma) is formed, encompassing ten meanings or referring to them. As stated in the *Dod 'jo* (Wish-fulfilling): "Because it holds all, it is Dharma, or Chos." \t\t\tThe ten meanings are, as found in the *Nam bshad rigs pa* (Commentary on Logic/Reasoning): \t\t\tDharma means knowable and path, \t\t\t(89b) Nirvana and mental object, \t\t\tMerit, life and scripture, \t\t\tFuture, certainty and doctrine. \t\t\tAs it appears, the word "Dharma" (Chos) applies to "knowable" as an example: \t\t\tIn a Sutra: "Whatever Dharma is compounded, or uncompounded." And: \t\t\t"Know all Dharmas to be like that." \t\t\tAnd so forth. \t\t\tIts application to "path" is: for example, "Monks, wrong view is not Dharma, but right view is Dharma." \t\t\tIts application to "Nirvana" is: for example, "Having taken refuge in the Dharma." \t\t\tIts application to "mental object" is: for example, "Dharma-ayatana" (sphere of Dharma). \t\t\tIts application to "merit" is: for example, "practicing Dharma together with the queen's retinue and young women." \t\t\tIts application to "life" is: for example, "Children cherish the Dharma they see (this visible existence)." \t\t\tIts application to "scripture" is: for example, "Monks, what is called Dharma is this: the Sutra division, the Geya (versified prose) division," \t\t\tIts application to "future/becoming" is: The compounded substances are its Dharma (nature).

Thus, and: “I too have not passed beyond the dharma of death and the nature of death,” such as this. Entering into Certainty: Such as, “The four dharmas of a monastic,” and, “Monastics, killing living beings is not dharma, but abandoning killing living beings is dharma,” and so forth. Entering into Tradition: Such as regional customs (yul chos) and intellectual dharmas (rig chos). If one wonders how these relate to the meaning of the word 'grasping' (dzin pa), it is that by all knowable things, one grasps their particular and general characteristics. For example: Earth is hardness, Water is wetness, Fire is heat, Wind is lightness and movement, such as this. Particular characteristics: All compounded phenomena are impermanent; All contaminated phenomena are suffering; All phenomena are selfless (89b); Nirvāṇa is peace, such as this. Grasping general characteristics: By the path and nirvāṇa, one is held from falling into saṃsāra; By mental objects, one grasps the mind; By merit, one is held from falling into lower realms; By life or vitality, one grasps the body or similar continuity; By scripture, one grasps the meaning without error; By future occurrences, one grasps the dharma of its causes; By certainty, one grasps the basis to be ascertained; By tradition, one grasps practices similar to oneself; By reason, one grasps from the side of delusion, it should be reasoned thus. J3 The third [division] has two parts: N1 The basis of division, and N2 The actual division. N1 The first is: The supreme dharma encompassed by cessation and path. What is to be taught in this context from those just explained is the very nature of the supreme dharma encompassed by the truths of cessation and path. And the reason for possessing that characteristic is: either because it is the supreme of all dharmas; or 'Supreme' refers to the Fully Enlightened Buddha, and 'dharma' is what is taught by Him; or alternatively, because it is the dharma to be practiced by supreme individuals, it is called thus. N2 The second [actual division] has two parts: T1 Brief statement, T2 Extensive explanation. T1 The first is: If divided, the object of expression, realization, and the expressive scripture. Thus. T2 The second [extensive explanation] has two parts: Th1 Realization of the object of expression, and Th2 Expressive scripture. Th1 The first is: The supreme dharma of realization, cessation, path, bliss...
