This is our tradition. If one wishes to adhere to it, it would be good to supplement it solely with what appears in the various scattered Hinayana sutras such as the `Sutra of a Hundred Actions` (Mdo sde las brgya pa) and the `Jataka Tales` (Rtogs brjod brgya pa). Mixing the two with each other is inappropriate and would result in neither, hence it is not good. Although it is commonly held in this region (Tibet) that the `Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish` (Mdzangs blun) and `Close Mindfulness` (Dran pa nyer gzhag) and so forth belong to the Shravakayana (Hearer's Vehicle) Pitaka, in reality, they are definitely Mahayana Pitaka texts. Therefore, the account of the great miracles found in the `Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish` is precisely the tradition of the Mahayana. Moreover, according to the Shravakayana tradition, the miracles last for one day, whereas in the Mahayana tradition, they last for fifteen days. From this, it can be inferred that there are very many other dissimilar distinctions in all other aspects as well. Furthermore, the deeds of the Buddha that appeared in common to all—including those holding wrong views, non-Buddhists (Tirthikas), and even animals, who were situated nearby and were suitable recipients—during the time of the Buddha's descent into the world, are this common vehicle tradition (79b), which is the Shravakayana tradition. As for how the appearances manifest in the perception of those disciples to be tamed specifically for the uncommon Mahayana, these originate from the Mahayana sutras. Therefore, generally there are different categories among them, and specifically there are great differences in the magnitude (of the deeds). Although the two approaches do not contradict in meaning, the method of explanation must be kept unmixed. For this reason, even the one renowned in this region (Tibet) as "the Second Omniscient One" (Thams cad mkhyen pa gnyis pa) presented the first eleven of the twelve deeds (of the Buddha) in accordance with the `Lalitavistara Sutra` (rgya rol), and the final part he supplemented with what appears in minor scriptural passages. I do not see this as very appropriate, and there are many other similar instances. Among these two traditions, the Mahayana tradition is generally more extensive, an object of inconceivable wisdom, appears in the perception of superior disciples, is a great secret liberation story, and for many reasons, including the differences in the higher and lower levels of Mahayana practitioners themselves, it is certainly superior. However, the basis for various investigations—such as what is established in the common perception of all beings, the duration of the Buddha's lifespan, earlier and later times, and whether or not he set foot in particular places—is solely this common tradition.

The Mahayana system is not merely this, for it is an inconceivable sphere of activity. Therefore, regarding its objects, times, and deeds, it is difficult to define and limit them as being exclusively this. Thus, in the manner of explaining narrative connections, this approach of the common vehicle is definitely understood to be crucial. So it is said. This is the chapter explaining the twelve deeds demonstrated by the Nirmanakaya in this world. This is the commentary on the third chapter, which explains the twelve deeds demonstrated by the Nirmanakaya in this world. Fourth: The chapter on the special differentiation of the Body and Pure Land according to the system of Clear Light Vajra Peak. The fourth chapter, the special differentiation of the Body and Pure Land according to the system of Clear Light Vajra Peak, has two parts: 1. Connection; 2. Extensive explanation of the meaning. 1. The first is: (80b) From the Supreme Vehicle Clear Light Vajra Peak: In the Nyingma (Old Translation) tradition of Secret Mantra, among all the nine progressively renowned vehicles, the supreme or ultimate Clear Light Dzogchen Ati Yoga Vajra Peak tantras and treatises explain the unique arrangement of the Body and Pure Land as follows. 2. The second [extensive explanation of the meaning] has four parts: 1. How the Primordial Protector manifested enlightenment and arranged the pure lands; 2. How Vajradhara, as its emanation, attained peace in this world; 3. How the two Form Bodies emanated from that; 4. A supplementary discussion raising other traditions of explanation. 1. The first has two parts: 1. How the Dharmakaya manifested enlightenment; 2. How the ocean of self-appearing pure lands was arranged from that. 1. The first is: Before cyclic existence and nirvana were ever differentiated, The naturally arising wisdom, the essence of the Sugata, At the very moment the luminosity of the ground arose from the ground, By recognizing its own nature, it self-liberated within the ground. Samantabhadra, the lord of all, endowed with the three greatnesses, Dwells in the pure land of the youthful vase body, where subtle wisdom of inner clarity merges without obscuration. Before either cyclic existence or nirvana was ever differentiated, the master Samantabhadra, who reigns over all existence and peace, from the primordial ground of the naturally arising wisdom, the essence of the Sugata in the dharmadhatu, manifested the luminosity of the ground...
