In Kushinagar, between the twin Sala trees, the Buddha remained on his final reclining bed in the lion's posture. He held in his mind the perception of light, the perception of mindfulness and clear comprehension, and the perception of passing beyond suffering (parinirvana). To Ananda, he taught three sets of four marvelous and extraordinary dharmas and bestowed oral instructions. He subdued the king of the Gandharvas, Rab Dga' (Joyful), and Kun tu Rgyu Rab Bzang (Excellent Wanderer), and others. Having advised such activities as the Buddha's deeds, such as reciting the Pratimoksha Sutra every half month, he then entered into the meditative absorption (dhyana) in both sequential and reverse orders. Thereafter, relying again on the highest stage of the fourth dhyana, he attained the peaceful and unmoving eye (of wisdom), demonstrating the manner of passing beyond suffering into the non-abiding sphere. For seven days, vast offerings were made by gods and humans, and the Buddha's relics were brought before a stupa adorned with a crown by mighty beings. On earth, the four unparalleled great Shravakas, among others, made offerings, and by spontaneous combustion, the relics turned into heaps of mustard seed-like sarira. King Ajatashatru of Magadha and the Licchavis of Vaishali (Yang pa can), among others, divided them into eight parts and built stupas in their respective lands, establishing great festivals and making vast offerings. The four canine teeth (relics) were obtained and revered by the Trayastrimsa gods and the Naga King of the city of Sgra Sgrogs (Sound-making), and others, each in their own right. Ajatashatru's share of the relics was later taken by King Ashoka (Dharmaraja Myangan Med), who built ten million stupas in Jambudvipa in one night. In the future, these will transform into the wisdom of Norbu Tok (Jewel Crest) and accomplish purposes, and so on. In short, the relics also spread and flourished throughout the world, thus performing countless deeds of the Buddha. (78b) C3 Third [Further elaboration on the distinction between Mahayana and Hinayana]: In the Shravaka tradition, miracles are for a single day. In the Mahayana tradition, they are exemplified by fifteen days and nights. The Dharma wheel, lifespan, and other such great waves (of events) are not uniform. Though the differences between great and small are vast, for the common Disciples who appear, the Shravakas are predominant. When explaining, the distinctions must be understood without confusion. Here, it is explained according to the scriptures of the Lords of the Ten Bhumis. The Buddha's deeds, disciplining...

The (events/occurrences) arising from that are numerous and differ according to the respective perspectives of the Great Vehicle (Mahayana) and the Small Vehicle (Hinayana). For example, in the tradition of the Hearers (Śrāvakas), the great miracles (supernormal powers) occurring in a single day are described in minor scriptures; \t\t\twhereas in the tradition of the Mahayanists, exemplified by the fifteen-day (miracle) from the *Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish* (*Dzangs Blun*), there are also the manner of turning the Wheel of Dharma, and the Buddha's lifespan, which is commonly held to be eighty years. \t\t\tFrom the definitive meaning of the scriptures (it is stated): \t\t\tThe Buddhas never truly pass into sorrow (nirvāṇa), \t\t\tNor shall the Dharma ever truly fade. \t\t\tSuch explanations are extensively elucidated, showing various differences. Although the distinctions in their profundity and scope are immense, what appears to all common disciples (those to be tamed) is this tradition of the Hearers. Therefore, it is strongly maintained and preserved. When explaining, these two must be clearly distinguished without confusion, and they should not be taught in a mixed manner. \t\t\tRegarding the method of counting the Twelve Deeds (of the Buddha), there are those expounded by the Noble Nāgārjuna in the *Precious Garland* (*Rinchen Trengwa*), and his well-known *Old Eulogy* (or *Ancient Praise*), as well as various compositions by scholars here in Tibet. Here, however, we follow the previously cited prophecy of Maitreya, the Regent, Lord of the Ten Bhumis, and explain it in accordance with the eulogistic verses composed by the glorious hero Tsuglag Trengwa (Pawo Tsuglag Trengwa). \t\t\tHere, from the work *Mdzad pa Mthong ba Don Ldan* (Actions Seen as Meaningful/Beneficial) by the Venerable All-Knowing Tāranātha, it is stated: Although the liberation stories of the Tathāgata (Buddha) appear equally in the three baskets (Tripitaka), it seems necessary to distinguish between the Great Vehicle and the Small Vehicle. \t\t\tIn the *Lalitavistara Sutra* (Arya Gya Che Rol Pa - The Play in Full), for example, from the time the Teacher (Buddha) resided in Tuṣita Heaven until the first turning of the Wheel of Dharma, there are extensive accounts. This is the tradition of the Mahayana. If one wishes to elaborate on this, then the stories of the two supreme (disciples) found in the *Ratnakuta Sutra*'s section *Ratnacūḍa* (Jewel Peak), and the story found in the *Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son* within the *Ratnakuta Sutra*, and the great miracles described in the *Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish*, and the accounts of parinirvāṇa found in the *Mahāparinirvāṇa Sutra*, and so forth—in short, it would be excellent if these could be supplemented solely from Mahayana sutras. \t\t\tFurthermore, what appears in the *Abhinishkramana Sutra* (Sutra of Great Renunciation) and from the Vinaya is the common tradition of the Hearer vehicle, the basket of...
