The gods carried the topknot and Kasi (Varanasi) garments and made great offerings (75na). Chapter 7 [The Deed of Practicing Asceticism]: Manifesting the meditative absorption of the peak of existence, by the river bank. For six years, he practiced asceticism in a single cross-legged posture. After the Bodhisattva renounced household life and went forth into homelessness, he proceeded to Vaishali. He received instructions on meditation from Alara Kalama (Long-flier, son of Artistic-knowledge) and Uddaka Ramaputta (Remaining Conduct, son of Delight-maker) in Rajagriha. However, the ultimate realization of their teachings was nothingness and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, which is the ultimate meditative absorption of the peak of existence. Although he manifested this with little difficulty, he rejected those meditations, absorptions, and samadhis that are defiled and involve grasping, and showed that liberation cannot be attained through them. Having seen many purposes, such as prophesying the functioning of karma and desiring to guide those with wrong ascetic practices, and showing that liberation cannot be attained through them, he passed six years in a single cross-legged posture on the bank of the Nairanjana River. He practiced various austerities such as daily eating one juniper berry, one grain of barley, and one sesame seed, and not even drinking a single drop of water. In order to demonstrate that the asceticism of body and speech has no essence, and that enlightenment cannot be perfected through such practices, he later partook of coarse food. His body became strong and beautiful, and thus he became known by the name 'Beautiful Ascetic' (Sukha Sramana). Chapter 8 [The Deed of Proceeding to the Heart of Enlightenment]: After partaking of milk porridge, the marks and signs (of a Buddha) blazed with light. He took a grass mat and proceeded to the Heart of Enlightenment. Then, he took a patched Dharma robe made from rags found in a charnel ground. As prophesied by the gods, he accepted honey-infused milk porridge, which was the essence of a thousand cows' milk condensed seven times, from the village girl Sujata (Well-born) of Delight-maker. As soon as he partook of it, his golden color and the marks and signs (of a Buddha), such as a fathom of light, became extremely clear and blazed with light (75ba). He then begged grass from the grass-seller Tashi (Auspicious) and took it for a mat. With an immovable posture, like the offering pillar of Indra. And so on, with fifty-one postures, when he proceeded to the Heart of Enlightenment, the entire earth became a vessel of brass.

Emitted sounds. This world, ruled by Brahma, the lord of the three thousand (worlds), adorned throughout by great magnificent displays, together with the gods and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, adorned countless Buddha-fields in the ten directions with the immeasurable power of their two accumulations. The immeasurable light illuminating all Buddha-fields comforted beings in hell and other realms, and a certain Black Naga (Klu nag po), who had lived for an eon and was blind, also had his eyes open and saw light when the Buddha appeared in the world. Flocks of birds (ཙཱ་ཤའི་ཁྱུ་) sang sweetly and circumambulated in the air to the right. The Supreme Sage himself also manifested all the embellishments of the Bodhicitta ornaments in all the Buddha-fields of the three times right there. He sat in the lotus posture upon the kusha grass tips, which were arranged facing inwards, with his face turned towards the East. His body was upright. He remained absorbed in mindfulness. Chapter 9: The Deed of Subduing Mara. The utterly unbearable, cunning host of Mara, Together with their afflictions, were subdued by the power of loving-kindness. Thereafter, in order to ripen those who had overcome Mara and the virtuous celestial sons of the Mara realm, [the Buddha] emitted rays of light from his brow, shaking and stirring Mara's dwelling place. Consequently, the evil ones (Mara) themselves saw unbearable nightmares and other terrifying visions, giving rise to fear, panic, and an utterly despairing mind. A host of troops filled an eighty-yojana circumference, with terrifying formations (76n) capable of shattering one's heart merely by thought. And hundreds of millions of such cunning beings from all three thousand worlds also arrived together, raining down weapons and emitting poisonous breath. However, all of these transformed into a magnificent cloud of offerings of Bodhicitta, rendering their powers ineffective. Since such merit alone cannot achieve liberation, when they implored [the Buddha] to rise, the earth goddess (Sa'i lha mo), who had accumulated the two accumulations over countless eons and reached perfection, along with her retinue, bore witness and made a plea. Subsequently, even the daughters of Mara, such as Craving (Sred ma) and Delight (Dga' ma), attempted to deceive him with the wiles of desire, but his mind remained unshaken, and thus the cunning host of Mara and their retinue (were defeated).
