Possessing the thirty-two major marks, and in the midst of four billion great continents, Ashvattha trees grow. In the minor islands, sandalwood groves grow. In the vicinity of the city of Kapilavastu (now Tilaurakot, Nepal), immeasurable natural abundance of happiness arises. All realms are completely filled with billions and trillions of wondrous signs. In the Lumbini (Lumbinī, now Lumbini, Nepal) garden, on the eighth day of the Bo month (the second month of the Tibetan calendar, equivalent to Vaishakha/Vesākha), coinciding with the Pushya constellation, he emerged from his mother's right side without causing her harm. As soon as the mandala of auspicious marks became manifest, Brahma and Indra, along with devas and nagas, offered worship and veneration. He took seven steps in each of the four directions, uttering a comforting voice that brought relief to all beings in the great three-thousandfold world system. The royal father, impressed by the wonder of his birth, gave him the name "Siddhartha" (Youth who has accomplished all aims). In Kapilavastu, he was raised by thirty-two foster mothers (p. 74b). Because he remained like a sage (or the Able One) among the fierce and arrogant Shakyas, he was given the second name "Shakyamuni" (Sage of the Shakyas). Because the devas and yakshas of the Shakyas, such as Shakya Pel, and all world protectors bowed at his feet, his father gave him the third name "Devatideva" (God of Gods). The Rishi Asita (the unblemished Black Seer) prophesied that he would become a Buddha. Chapter 4 [Deeds of Skill in Crafts]: Writing, arithmetic, drawing, archery, strength, analysis, and speech, He was skilled in many systems of arts and crafts. Although the Bodhisattva had reached the ultimate knowledge of all knowable phenomena, in order to mature countless disciples, he went to a school to learn writing. He acted as if learning from the teacher of all scribes, and demonstrated many things that had not even been heard of by name. When he completed his sixteenth year, the daughter of Shakya Lagna Becon, Yasodhara (Sa 'tsho ma), an emanation of the great glorious goddess Lhamo, was placed as a victory banner. In a competition of skills with five hundred Shakya youths, first, the great calculator Shakya Srid Grub was appointed to preside. In the contest of numerical positions, with witnesses present, no one could compete even slightly with the Bodhisattva. Similarly, in drawing, archery, strength, analysis, speech, swimming, measuring, jumping, and so forth.

Being exceptionally skilled in all aspects of art and craftsmanship across numerous traditions, he became unrivaled by anyone. He even subdued those who were arrogant due to their lineage and power, such as Devadatta. Chapter Five: The Deed of Engaging with the Retinue of Queens He brought to maturity the retinue of sixty thousand queens, Including Yasodhara, Gopa, and others, who possessed all virtues. For instance, Yasodhara, Gopa, Mrigaja, and others, who possessed all the excellent qualities of precious women—such as beautiful form, youthful grace, freedom from arrogance, and delight in generosity—each accompanied by their twenty thousand retinues, along with a multitude of sixty thousand or eighty-four thousand queens, offered him with supreme arrangements of songs, music, and so forth, like the nectar of immortality. Through deeds skillfully employing means, such as sporting and delighting among them, he brought all these retinues of queens to full maturity in bodhi (enlightenment). Chapter Six: The Deed of Renunciation Having seen old age, sickness, death, and renunciation, He resolutely went forth into homelessness and accepted the saffron robes. At the age of twenty-nine, at the four gates of the city, he saw old age, sickness, death, and a renunciant leading a pure life. The Buddhas of the ten directions urged and blessed him with songs and the sound of cymbals. Through the power of his own aspirations, he manifested aversion to the royal dominion and the retinue of queens, thereby conceiving the resolute intention to renounce. At that time, upon hearing the prognostication of the astrologers that 'if he does not renounce within seven days, he will become a universal monarch,' the Shakyas guarded him with all their might. On the night of the full moon of the Tishya (or Pushya) lunar mansion, the manifestation of Vajrasattva, Prince Rahula, was blessed into the womb of Gopa. In the middle of the night, he mounted the excellent horse Kanthaka, and accompanied by his attendant Chandaka and hundreds of thousands of millions of gods including Indra, he was worshipped as he proceeded through the sky, travelling twelve yojanas eastward to Vaisali. There, he personally cut off his topknot and renounced. He accepted the saffron robes offered by the gods. Chandaka returned with the horse, thereby alleviating the sorrow of his father and the queens.
