Based on this, the presented treatise is concise, its words and meanings are easy to comprehend, and it is very clear. It should articulate a portion of the perfectly complete verses that encompass all knowable subjects. So it is said. Secondly, by the venerable Master Vasubandhu: Including the concise meaning of the purpose, Including the meaning of the words and their connection, Including questions and answers, thus it should be explained. It is said: Among the five limbs of the method for explaining treatises, what should first be explained is the "meaning of the purpose." The accomplished meaning and summarized meaning will be briefly presented by it. (6b) The meaning's verbal and conceptual aspects will be extensively explained. Connecting in a manner that does not contradict the sequence, and questioning and answering in a manner that does not contradict reason, should be explained in whatever order. Initially, although the extensive exposition of the four times three, twelve types of interdependent origination is present, When summarized here, there are four: the Teacher (Buddha) and the Doctrine that tame the realms of disciples (beings); sequentially entering the states of ethical discipline, and listening, contemplating, and meditating; by traversing this path, the perfectly complete establishment of attaining liberation, which culminates in the ultimate fruit, is the subject matter of this treatise. By listening and expounding upon this (treatise), through cultivating wisdom, the wisdom born of hearing, suitable for entering the stages of the Tripitaka and the vehicles, will arise, and gradually, the wisdom born of contemplation and meditation, which is unerring, will arise. This is the "purpose." From this ("purpose"), the state of liberation and omniscience (Buddhahood) will be easily attained. This is the "ultimate necessity." The ultimate necessity is connected to the purpose, the purpose is connected to the subject matter, and the subject matter, etc., also depend on each other sequentially. This establishes the "connection" of this (treatise). Intermediate Good: The Meaning of the Treatise. K2 The second fundamental, the intermediate good, which is the meaning of the treatise, has two parts: K1 A concise presentation; and K2 An extensive explanation. K1 The first is: In the realm where the Lamp Kalpa appears, When the Teacher, the Buddha's doctrine, with its two aspects of scripture and realization, Resides and flourishes in Jambudvipa (continent of roses), By sequentially engaging in ethical discipline, listening, contemplating, and meditating, The path is traversed, the ultimate fruit is reached, and the body of this treatise Is established as the number of the ten perfections (paramitas). This means, initially, the foundation for the appearance of the precious Triple Gem is the Lamp Kalpa...

This presents the realm where goodness appears. In that realm, the supreme precious one, the chief teacher, the Buddha, who tames those to be tamed, appeared. How his doctrine, the Dharma wheel of scripture and realization (7 recto), arose. How much it spread and flourished in this excellent continent named Jambudvipa. When the Buddha's doctrine abides, how one learns and dwells in the initial stages of its entry, the precepts of Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva vows, and Tantra. Relying on that, doubts are severed by hearing, certainty is established by contemplation, and final determination is achieved by meditation, thus gradually progressing through the stages and paths, perfectly traversing them, and ultimately reaching the fruition of liberation and omniscience. Therefore, the complete structure of this treatise, divided into sections, is set forth in the number of the ten perfections (paramitas). Thus it is said. Here, if we categorize slightly, from the four aspects: the meaning of each division, the fixed number, the order, and the condensed meaning. Firstly, the detailed explanation of each division will be given in the respective sections below. Secondly, the points to be understood by beginners with limited learning are set here as a fixed number, adorned by four subdivisions for each of the ten divisions, because more is not needed, and less would be insufficient. Thirdly, the reason for this definite order is as just mentioned. Fourthly, if these forty sections are condensed, they encompass the explanation of the meaning of the three trainings. The fifth stage teaches the higher training of ethical discipline. The sixth and seventh teach wisdom. The eighth primarily teaches the training of mind or meditative concentration (samadhi). The first to fourth stages are branches of wisdom. The ninth and tenth arise from the perfected meaning of the eighth, and therefore are included as its branches. Therefore, this treatise is called one that excellently teaches the three trainings. First Topic: Division of the Taming Realm and the World of Container and Contained. First: The section on generally showing the Buddha-field according to the Mahayana tradition. Kha 2: Secondly, in the detailed explanation, the detailed explanation of each of the ten divisions (7 verso). Ga 1: First, the division of how the taming realm and the world appear; thus, the first topic has four sections.
