To the supreme one who possesses the aggregate of complete liberation, unsurpassed by anyone in any aspect, having attained nirvana without remainder; who, having perfected the four wisdoms, possesses the aggregate of seeing liberating wisdom; and who accomplished all the purposes of a Buddha for the trainees of the degenerate age—to that one, I shall prostrate with great reverence, mindful of their kindness. This (verse) directly teaches the main qualities of the Buddha, the Three Trainings; and incidentally teaches the five pure aggregates. Moreover, it briefly presents the main subject matter of this treatise. Here, the Three Trainings are common to all three vehicles, so even if explained according to the common worldly appearance of the Śrāvakayāna tradition, it would be a direct teaching in sequence and thus acceptable. However, here it is explained from the perspective of the Buddhayāna (Mahayana). 3. [Praising Mañjuśrī, the Lion of Speech, in accordance with the Pāramitā path, and supplicating for desired aims]. With the great heroic mind holding beings throughout the realms, By noble conduct, pervading all of dharmadhātu. Though having become the Father of Conquerors, still in the manner of a Prince, May Mañjuśrī, the Lion of Speech, bestow stainless wisdom. This (verse) means: Firstly, from the three ways of generating the supreme Bodhicitta, with the enhanced aspiration like a shepherd's vow, by the power of the unequalled great hero's wisdom, for as long as there are realms of beings (page 5b), one embraces all sentient beings with great compassion, without oneself attaining Buddhahood before them. During the path, by means of an ocean-like vast noble conduct, such as the ten pāramitās, unparalleled by any Buddha's son, one pervades the entire dharmadhātu. Although having been fully enlightened from the very beginning and having become the Father of all Buddhas, he still tirelessly works for the benefit of beings in the manner of a young Bodhisattva until saṃsāra is emptied. May Mañjuśrī, the Lion of Speech, bestow upon me and those who teach and listen, stainless and unobstructed supreme wisdom and dhāraṇī. This (verse) briefly illustrates the essence of the Mahayana Pāramitā path. 4. [To the Guru lineage, and the stages of the Secret Mantra path, and...

universally with reverence bow] is: Nurtured by the instructions for ripening and liberation of the lineage-sphere seed, By the path of the two stages, instantly purify defilements, Bestower of the result of the four kāyas of great bliss, I bow to the all-holding Gurus together with their lineage. Thus it says: Based on perceiving that in the foundational continuum of all sentient beings, the naturally luminous lineage or sphere, the Tathāgatagarbha, resides in the form of a seed, empowerment that causes ripening and instructions that cause liberation are bestowed, thereby offering a special nourishment for liberation. Through the path's continuum, by the two stages of generation and completion, the realization of the path is generated in the mind-stream, purifying all defilements of afflictions, knowledge, unchanging appearance, and sudden adventitious stains. And in this very lifetime, the result of the four kāyas, uniquely characterized by great bliss, is connected to the mind-stream and bestowed. I bow with great reverence to the all-holding Gurus, the virtuous spiritual friends, headed by the Vajra Master endowed with the three kindnesses, and to the assembly of lineage Gurus of the three vows. Thus it is said. This thereby fully taught the stages of the Vajrayāna path. C3. Third, the vow has two parts: 1. The actual (main part); 2. An incidental explanation of the four factors such as the need, etc. First: Though not possessing the capacity of intellect to perfectly gather (knowledge), For those whose wisdom and diligence in understanding the treatises are meager, In order that the fortune from the island of precious jewels may not cease, I shall speak concisely, clearly, and perfectly. Thus it says: Being destitute of the wisdom arising from innate disposition and effort (i.e., hearing, contemplating, and meditating), one does not possess even a fraction of the intellectual capacity to perfectly comprehend vast knowledge. Therefore, this task is not fitting for me to compose. Nevertheless, for the sake of benefiting to some extent those individuals corrupted by degenerate times, who rely on the rare and noble and are preoccupied with wrong livelihoods, whose wisdom and diligence are extremely meager – let alone the vast scriptures, even small treatises cannot be understood as they truly are – and for those whose intellectual strength and fortune are deficient, like myself and those similar to me, this is prompted by the superior intention to benefit them. At this juncture, having arrived at the island of precious sūtras and tantras due to good karmic predispositions accumulated previously, in order that the fortune of the three (comprehension, experience, and realization) may not cease, the subject matter is vast...
