By this one reaches the other shore, and then, relying on wisdom born from reflection and meditation, one will gradually and easily attain unsurpassed enlightenment. This is the unerring path excellently taught by the Buddhas and their spiritual sons. In order to make a mere entrance to such a path easily comprehensible to those of dull intellect like myself, this treatise expounds three topics: 1. The initial auspicious and exalted meaning of the preamble. 2. The intermediate auspicious and definitively excellent meaning of the main text. 3. The final auspicious meaning of the conclusion, accomplishing the two benefits. 1. Firstly, the meaning of the preamble has three parts: 1.1 Presenting the name to establish the body of the treatise or to understand its terminology. 1.2 Expressing homage to prevent obstacles in composition and to know it as a lineage of the holy ones. 1.3 Making a vow for the completion of the composition and to perceive its purpose. 1.1 Firstly, presenting the name has three parts: Presenting the name itself by juxtaposing the two languages (Sanskrit and Tibetan). Explaining its meaning. Dispelling misconceptions about it. Firstly: (page 3) In Indian language, it is: ཡཱན་སརྦ་མུ་ཁེ་བྷྱཿས་མུཙྪ་ཡ་པྲ་བ་ཙ་ནཾ་རཏྣ་ཀོཥ་ཏྲི་ཤིཀྵ་སུ་དེ་ཤི་ཀཱ་ཤཱསྟྲཾ་སརྦ་ཛྙེ་ཡ་སྥ་ར་ཎ་ནཱ་མ། (Yāna sarvamukhebhyaḥ samuccaya pravacanaṃ ratnakoṣa triśikṣā sudeśikā śāstraṃ sarvajñeya spharaṇa nāma) This is because, in the vast land of India, where white is primarily used for clothing, it is known as India or the noble land where the noble Buddhas appeared. There are four major language families: Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhraṃśa, and Paiśācī. Among them, the principal one is: In Tibetan language, it is named "Mahāyāna-sarvamukha-samuccaya-pravacana-ratnakoṣa-triśikṣā-sudeśikā-śāstra-sarvajñeya-spharaṇa" (A Compendium of All Mahayana Doors, a Treasury of Precious Teachings, a Good Exposition of the Three Trainings, and a Treatise Pervading All Knowable Objects). When what is spoken in Sanskrit, the language of the gods, is translated into Tibetan, it is: ཡཱ་ན། (ཡཱ་ན།, यान, Yāna, Vehicle) meaning 'Vehicle'. སརྦ་མུ་ཁེ་བྷྱཿ། (སརྦ་མུ་ཁེ་བྷྱཿ།, सर्वमुखेभ्यः, Sarvamukhebhyaḥ, From all doors) meaning 'From all doors/aspects'. ས་མུཙྪ་ཡ། (ས་མུཙྪ་ཡ།, समुच्चय, Samuccaya, Compendium) meaning 'Compendium'. པྲ་བ་ཙ་ནཾ། (པྲ་བ་ཙ་ནཾ།, प्रवचनं, Pravacanaṃ, Teaching) meaning 'Teaching/Discourse'. རཏྣ་ཀོ་ཥ། (རཏྣ་ཀོ་ཥ།, रत्नकोष, Ratnakoṣa, Treasury of Jewels) meaning 'Treasury of Jewels'. ཏྲི་ཤིཀྵ། (ཏྲི་ཤིཀྵ།, त्रिशिक्ṣā, Triśikṣā, Three Trainings) meaning 'Three Trainings'. སུ་དེ་ཤི་ཀཱ། (སུ་དེ་ཤི་ཀཱ།, सुदेशिका, Sudeśikā, Good Exposition) meaning 'Good Exposition'. ཤཱསྟྲཾ། (ཤཱསྟྲཾ།, शास्त्रं, Śāstraṃ, Treatise) meaning 'Treatise'. སརྦ་ཛྙེ་ཡ། (སརྦ་ཛྙེ་ཡ།, सर्वज्ञेय, Sarvajñeya, All Knowable Objects) meaning 'All Knowable Objects'. སྥ་ར་ཎ། (སྥ་ར་ཎ།, स्फारण, Spharaṇa, Pervading or Spreading) meaning 'Pervading or Spreading'. ནཱ་མ། (ནཱ་མ།, नाम, Nāma, Named) meaning 'Named'. Here, the non-occurrence of the genitive case (third of the six cases listed for Sanskrit in some Tibetan grammatical traditions) is due to the compounding of words in Sanskrit. The second part has three [sub-parts]: Directly explaining the meaning. Combining it with the five computational points...

Discourse. Ascertaining the mode of explanation. Firstly, in terms of its form, this is a precious selection from all scriptures and treatises that expound the categories (or 'stages') of the Vehicles of Devas and Humans, and the three Buddhist Vehicles (or 'Hearer, Solitary Realizer, Bodhisattva') or the nine graded Vehicles. The term 'gate' here means 'category' (or 'stage'). In terms of its essence, because it gathers the main modes of explanation from the Tathagata's authentic scriptures (or 'Buddha's teachings') and related treatises, the precious teachings to be revealed are either contained within this, or this contains them, and thus it is given the appellation 'Treasury' (Mdzod). Its nature is this treatise, which clearly and completely expounds the three higher trainings of ethics, concentration, and wisdom, and is endowed with the qualities of disciplining from the enemy of defilements and protecting from existence in the lower realms, thus possessing six freedoms and three perfections (or 'three qualities'). These three names are taken as its principal subject matter. Just as space opens the way for discerning individual phenomena, this treatise likewise opens the way for wisdom to discern as many knowable objects as there are, thus pervading all (knowables). Furthermore, just as the container (world) and its contents (beings) manifest from that (space) as a basis, from this (treatise) too, the three kinds of wisdom can manifest. This is taken as the primary means of expression. Secondly, the scholars residing in Vikramashila Monastery (Vikramashila) explain the beginning of all treatises with five branches (or 'five points'): As it is said: 'Who is the author of this (treatise)? From where are the scriptural references drawn? To which tradition does it belong? For whose benefit was this (treatise) composed? What is the condensed meaning of its beginning and end?' In this manner, from these five (points): Firstly, from the force (or 'contents') of these works, the author emerges. The categories of names (or 'nomenclature') will be explained below. Secondly, it is explained by the statement 'Selected from all doors of the Vehicles'. Thirdly, it is indicated by the statement 'Treasury of Precious Teachings' (or 'Treasury of Tathagata's Teachings'). Fourthly, regarding self-benefit and benefit for others, it is not for the sake of others' urging, etc., but because of one's own desire to cultivate wisdom in all knowable objects, and being motivated by superior aspiration, it is indicated by the statement 'pervading all knowables'. Fifthly, the meaning is summarized by the statement 'Treatise that perfectly expounds the three trainings'. Thirdly, regarding treatises, there are the general words of the Buddha (or 'general scriptural teachings') and explanations of their specific intentions, both of which are renowned.
