It is said that one accumulates merit and traverses the path. And it is also stated by the Reverend Jetsunma Phagpa (Arya Tara or a similar revered female figure): \t\t\tThe first bhumi is held to be; \t\t\tThis, by immeasurable kalpas. \t\t\tAnd: \t\t\tBy the completion of two countless (kalpas), \t\t\tThe path of meditation is fully accomplished. \t\t\tAnd so forth. In accordance with this, Jigmey Zhabs (Fearless One's Feet/Lord Atisha) stated: Thus, with the first countless kalpa, starting from the bhumi of accumulation, one accomplishes up to the first bhumi. With the second, the six bhumis, such as the Stainless (bhumi). With the third, starting from the Immovable bhumi, up to the bhumi of Buddhahood, as stated in the sutras. \t\t\tIn verse twenty-two, it appears: "Here, the Blessed One diligently strives without interruption for three or seven countless kalpas." \t\t\tAlso from the Lalitavistara Sutra (Expanded Play Sutra), it is stated: "Having perfectly accomplished the roots of virtue for seven countless kalpas." \t\t\tAbhaya and Top Chu Pal Shes (Abhayakaragupta and Dashabala Srimitra) stated: Thus, the complete perfection of the Bodhisattva's accumulation will pass one countless kalpa. \t\t\tAfter that, the complete perfection of the bhumi of faith-conduct (Adhimukti-caryābhūmi) will pass two countless kalpas. \t\t\tAfter that, starting from the first bhumi, Utpala (Joyful), up to the tenth bhumi, Dharma Cloud (Dharma-megha), each will be perfected through three countless kalpas, thereby accomplishing the bhumi of Buddhahood, Samantabhadra (All-good). \t\t\tThus, it is said that Buddhahood is attained through thirty-three countless kalpas. This is presented as a mere calculation. \t\t\tIn the Ratnamegha Sutra (Jewel Cloud Sutra), it is stated: "The Tathagata (Thus-gone One) is perfected through many countless kalpas. Son of noble family, the Tathagata is immeasurable, unthinkable, and inscrutable." And many such assertions appeared, some of which also refer to different ways of counting numerical positions: \t\t\tFrom the Bodhisattvabhumi (Bodhisattva Grounds), it is stated that there are two systems of designation for countless: one aspect where a great kalpa (Mahakalpa) has countless years, months, days, times, moments, etc., thus designated as countless; and another aspect where the great kalpa itself is beyond counting, thus designated as countless. \t\t\tBy the Arya Sthaviras (Noble Elders), the fifty-five numerical positions are (called) a small countless. That one numerical position...

counted as fifty-five, extending up to a great countless (aeon), and In accordance with the Abhidharma-kośa text and its commentary, many scholars like Abhaya explained that the sixtieth position of numbers is indeed a countless (aeon), and From the Lalitavistara and Avatamsaka Sutras, etc., also very extensive systems of numbers that became the domain of activity of the noble ones were taught, therefore, (these teachings) were spoken after individually considering many such modes of numbering, and even the beginning of undertaking countless (aeons) was taught to be counted from the initial aspiration (bodhicitta), and From the Mahāyānasaṃgraha: (65b) Excellent and endowed with the power of aspiration, Firm in mind, specially progressing, These Bodhisattvas undertake three countless (aeons), They all completely accomplish this endeavor. Thus, it is clear that they begin from the great path of accumulation, and From the Ratnamegha Sutra: The ultimate bodhicitta, as it truly is, first clearly manifests from the attainment of the first bhūmi (ground), and so on, thus there are various bases of intention/meaning, and Sometimes, by teaching very vast accumulations of merit and wisdom, and because the arising of a Buddha is difficult to find, it was spoken as a long time, and Some, by that, become discouraged and do not engage in supreme enlightenment, therefore, in order to encourage them, it was spoken as a short time, and Ultimately, numbers and counting, etc., are naturally devoid (of inherent existence), and multiple times are not contradictory in a single time, and gathering many into one, etc., and also in order to show the inconceivable suchness/reality, it was spoken as indeterminate, and so on. Because it is reasonably established due to many purposes, it should not be considered a contradiction. Jha 2 The second [actual mode of conduct] is: Universally renowned, from the path of accumulation up to the first (bhūmi), Is one countless aeon; with the second, six bhūmis are traversed; With the third, from the immovable (bhūmi) up to the eleventh; By ordinary beings and those on the path of learning, the two accumulations are accomplished. In this way, various extensive and brief modes of countless aeons and Bodhisattva conduct arise. If we take the universally renowned (explanation), from when Prince Youthful Diligence (Sadāpralāpa Bodhisattva) became engaged in conduct and served a great multitude of Buddhas, one countless kalpa of accumulating merits spans from the path of accumulation up to the first bhūmi, and From then on, trade/merchant...
