As for perfecting the second immeasurable kalpa. Thus it is said. Starting from the Buddha Sujāta, up to the Buddha Kāśyapa, I made offerings to seventy-seven thousand. As for that third immeasurable kalpa, thus it is said. From the Abhidharma-kośa, it says: Vipassī Buddha, Dīpaṃkara Buddha, Ratnaśikhin Buddha, appeared at the end of the third immeasurable kalpa. The first was Śākyamuni Buddha. (63b) As explained, the Vaibhāṣikas assert that the Teacher (Buddha) traversed the path through three immeasurable kalpas. According to this system, the beginning of the immeasurable kalpas is clearly stated to commence from when one personally attended the Tathāgata and generated the mind of enlightenment. Therefore, during the three immeasurable kalpas, starting from Śākyamuni Buddha up to Kāśyapa Buddha, offerings were made to two hundred and thirty thousand Tathāgatas, thereby accumulating merits. According to the system of the Abhidharma-kośa, from Śākyamuni Buddha until Ratnaśikhin Buddha was the first immeasurable kalpa. From then until Dīpaṃkara Buddha was the second immeasurable kalpa. From then until Vipaśyin Buddha, the third immeasurable kalpa passed. With compassion for all, Generosity was perfected by giving all. Even if attached limbs were severed, Undisturbed patience and discipline, Due to the unwavering mind. By praising the Star King, And diligently practicing effort. Thus, at that time, the first three perfections were completed. Then, in a cave, he saw the Tathāgata Star King (Kāśyapa Buddha) entering the sphere of resplendent glory. With immense faith, he stood on one leg, with diligent effort, for seven days and nights. There is no other great śramaṇa like you, a supreme being, on the divine earth. Nor in this world, nor in the abode of Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera). Nor in the supreme places of divine palaces, nor in the cardinal and intermediate directions. Throughout the extensive earth with mountains and forests, where could there be such a unique place? By praising with this verse, effort was completed, and merits were accumulated. For ninety-one kalpas, the deeds for the thirty-two major marks (of a Buddha) were accomplished, (64b) and residing in Tuṣita Heaven, for a lifespan equal to that of the deities there, and so forth, are understood literally. Thus, disciplining...

Regarding the current definitions, there are two slightly different positions: the Abhidharmakosha system is precisely the view of the Kashmir Vaibhāṣikas, who assert that all dharmas exist. What arises from the scriptural tradition is that in the Noble Land (India), the various schools had different ways of recitation, thus it appears to be mixed with the recitation methods of other schools. The Sthaviras (Elders) accumulated aspiration for seven immeasurable eons. Thereafter, for nine immeasurable eons, they engaged in conduct. For four eons, they accomplished the conduct of the three gates (body, speech, mind). For one hundred thousand eons, after perfecting the subtle deeds, they wished to attain Buddhahood. Among the four fundamental schools, the tradition of the Sthaviras (Theravāda) is that from the very beginning of generating the thought of enlightenment before the Brahmas and other deities, for seven immeasurable eons, they pleased one hundred fifty-five thousand Buddhas and merely made aspirations for enlightenment. Then, for nine immeasurable eons, they made offerings to three hundred eighty-seven thousand Buddhas, practiced the conduct of enlightenment, and made aspirations with mind and speech. Then, for four immeasurable eons, they made offerings to twelve Buddhas and diligently practiced the conduct of enlightenment through the three gates (body, speech, and mind). Then, for one hundred thousand eons, they pleased fifteen Buddhas, perfected all the subtle karmas of the conduct of enlightenment through the three gates, and thus attained Buddhahood, it is asserted. The Mahāsāṃghika school asserts that from ten to thirty Immeasurable eons are needed to accumulate merit, each according to its kind. Although the Mahāsāṃghika school asserts that Buddhas need to accumulate merit over a period of ten to thirty immeasurable eons, I have not seen any scripture clearly explaining how the Teacher (Buddha Śākyamuni) traversed the path (64b). Chapter 2, Part Two [Mahayana Tradition] has three sections: 1. Presenting the categories of numbers, their intended meaning, and purpose. 2. The actual way of engaging in practice. 3. Explaining the dharmas to be practiced. Part One is: Also in the Mahayana, there are three and thirty-three, And many who assert various ways of counting immeasurable eons. The basis of the intention (gong gzhis) includes: the initial generation of aspiration, the great path of accumulation, And taking hold from the first bhumi (stage). Due to the need to demonstrate rarity (rnyed dka'), to abandon laziness, And to show the inconceivable nature of time. In the Mahayana tradition, in most sutras and tantras, it is also asserted that three immeasurable eons are required to accumulate...
