Having manifestly attained Buddhahood, he performed the welfare of beings. This compassionate Teacher, having truly attained perfect enlightenment since beginningless time (61a), through the emanations of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, has performed the welfare of beings in the three times. For the sake of beings to be tamed in this degenerate age, he first generated the supreme Bodhicitta; in the interim, he practiced deeds over three immeasurable eons; finally, he demonstrated the manner of perfectly attaining Buddhahood at Vajrasana in Magadha (an ancient kingdom in central India, now the Bihar region). Through the great miraculous display of the fourfold Vinaya, he continuously worked for the benefit of beings; this should be understood as the essence or summary statement of the Liberation Sutra. Chapter 3: The third part [Manner of first generating the mind of enlightenment] has two (subsections): 1. The approach of the Hinayana; 2. The approach of the Mahayana. 1. The first is: According to the Hinayana, the King Od-den (Light-Possessing), Relied on three and first generated the supreme mind. Thereafter, seeing the great Muni Shakya Brahma-god, He began the first immeasurable (eon) of generating the mind. Also, regarding the manner in which the Teacher himself generated the mind: According to the view of the Hinayana Sravakas: In former times, when this Teacher was born as King Od-den (Light-Possessing), relying on three reasons, he gave charity and made aspirations, and it is said that he generated the supreme mind for unsurpassed enlightenment. In the Vinaya Sutra, Ananda asked: Lord of the world, guide of beings, O Muni, you generated the mind of enlightenment, When did you first generate it? O great fortunate one, please tell me. After such inquiries, Having heard of the Buddha free from attachment, And seen the great pride of elephants, And that the world is afflicted with suffering, I generated the mind of enlightenment. It is said that such teachings were given. Thereafter, when this Teacher was born as a potter named Yangs-pa'i 'od (Extensive Light) in Yangs-pa'i grong-khyer (Extensive City), the Bhagavan named Shakya Thub-pa (Muni of the Shakya clan) appeared in the world. He applied butter and (61b) sesame oil to his body, and offered sugarcane juice and other drinks. May I, through this supreme generosity, be born in the Shakya clan, And become a Buddha equal in qualities, lineage, and family, I also

May (beings) be liberated from the suffering bonds of the Brahma realms and intervening worlds, reaching the vast, fearless peace of the other shore. Thus, he made this aspiration and generated the mind of enlightenment. Furthermore, according to the wishes of the Sthaviras, the Ten Powers Glorious Kalyanamitra (Spal bshe gnyen) recorded in the treatise differentiating conditioned and unconditioned phenomena: The Bhagavan, named "Superior Deva," who became a universal monarch and lord of humans, in beginningless samsara, having seen the Buddhas and Brahma deities he had never seen before, merely wished, "May I too become such a Buddha." It is said that in any case, having seen those Victors, he generated the mind of enlightenment and wished to begin the first of the three innumerable aeons. Chapter 2: [Mahayana Tradition] In the Mahayana tradition, the Brahmin Ocean Dust (Rgya mtsho'i rdul), Caused his own son, the Victor Jewel Essence (Rin chen snying po), And billions upon billions of sentient beings, To generate the mind of enlightenment, and finally he himself, During the era of contention (Rtsod pa'i dus), made five hundred great vows, Received prophecies, and furthermore, the giants of hellfire, And Arthadarśana (Don yod mthong la), were also mentioned many times as having generated the mind (of enlightenment), and so forth. If explained according to the tradition found in the Mahayana Tripitaka: From the *White Lotus of Compassion* (Snying rje pad dkar) it says: In the past, after countless aeons as numerous as the sands of the Ganges had passed, in this Buddha-field, an aeon named "Great Holder of Aeons" (Bskal pa chen po 'dzin pa) arose. In that great aeon, in this four-continent Buddha-field, a universal monarch named "Rim of the Wheel" (Rtsibs kyi mu khyud) appeared. Before him, the son of the chief reciter (Mdu' na 'don gyi gtso bo) (p. 63a), the Brahmin Ocean Dust (Rgya mtsho'i rdul), whose son was Ocean Essence (Rgya mtsho'i snying po), after manifesting enlightenment, became known as Jewel Essence (Rin chen snying po), and he was profoundly offered to with unparalleled abundance by King Rim of the Wheel and his thousand sons. Finally, the great Brahmin also made offerings in the same manner. Then, at another time, that Brahmin established the people of Jambudvīpa (Jambu'i gling) in the five precepts (Bslab pa'i gzhi lnga) and the mind of enlightenment (Byang chub kyi sems). He caused King Rim of the Wheel, Akṣobhya (Mig mi 'dzum), and his thousand sons to correctly generate the mind of enlightenment. Then, for seven years, they (in) their respective realms,
