Having contemplated these (qualities), in the presence of the Blessed One, he generated bodhicitta, took hold of a pure land, and made aspirations. Thus, the Tathagata Ratnagarbha (Jewel Essence), whose wheel-like sphere of influence is vast, was prophesied to attain buddhahood as Amitābha in Sukhāvatī, the land of great bliss. Similarly, the chief son, Mig Mi 'Dzum (Unblinking Eyes), was named Avalokiteśvara, and after Amitābha passed into nirvana at dusk, he would awaken at dawn as the king named 'Od Zer Kun 'Phags Dpal BrTsegs (Glorious Stack of All-Exalted Radiance). The second (son), having attained great power, would become the king named Rab Tu BrTan Pa Nor Bu BrTsegs (Very Firm Stack of Jewels). The third (son) was Mañjuśrī, the assembly of faculties; having perceived everything, the ninth royal son, Sdig Med (Stainless/Blameless), was Akṣobhya (Immovable), and it was prophesied that he would become Akṣobhya in the Abhirati (Utterly Joyous) pure land, and so on, thus completing the prophecy for a thousand (beings). Then, countless billions of sentient beings, such as the princes of the realms and the sons and disciples (as numerous as) the dust particles of the ocean, were prophesied. In this very fortunate eon in the Saha world (Mi mjed, the 'Endurable' realm), from Kāśyapa (Star Protector) who destroys samsara, up to those who hold great power and delight, prophecies were made, but others rejected the time of contention (or debate), except for the pervasive wind (Khyab 'jug rlung). He himself, having particularly embraced the time of contention, began to make aspirations, and then the world realms greatly trembled, and numerous wondrous appearances became pervasive. For the sake of liberating us sentient beings caught in the five degenerations (nyigs ma lnga bdo ba), he generated unparalleled courage and made five hundred great aspirations. At that time, the Victorious Ratnagarbha (Jewel Essence) greatly praised him through innumerable qualities such as diligence, and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions also praised him and specifically declared: "In this Saha world, during this fortunate eon, when sentient beings live for one hundred and twenty years, he would be prophesied to become the Tathagata Śākyamuni." Thus it occurred. Furthermore, in the Sūtra on Repaying the Kindness of the Buddha, when the Bodhisattva Ananda (King of Joy) asked the Blessed One where he first generated bodhicitta, (the Blessed One replied): In ancient times, when he was born as a powerful being who pulled fiery chariots in the fiery chariot hell, where the hell-guards 'A wang' resided, one of his companions was weak and unable to pull the chariot...

When able, Awang pierced with a three-pronged iron spear, struck with an iron hammer, and caused a shower of blood. Thereupon, due to the arising of unbearable compassion, he generated the thought of enlightenment, and supplicated Awang, saying: "Please arouse a little compassion!" Awang, becoming angry, inserted the three-pronged iron spear into his neck, and thereby he transferred his consciousness, becoming liberated from the hellish realm after purifying the sins of eight aeons. This detailed account appears. In the Sutra of the Three Heaps, it is said: "Just as the Blessed One, the Tathagata Shakyamuni Buddha, when he was delighted as the merchant's son, relied on the Blessed One, the Tathagata Great Beauty (Subhavyuha) Buddha, and first generated the thought of enlightenment, just like that." (63na) In the Lalitavistara, it is said: "Initially, you made offerings of Sala flowers to Don Yod Thong (Amoghadarshin) Buddha." This means that after realizing the Tathagata, the initial generation of the thought of enlightenment was in the presence of the Tathagata Amoghadarshin. In this way, the manner of initially generating the thought of enlightenment differs between the Great Vehicle and the Lesser Vehicle; even within the Great Vehicle itself, various differences appear in the sutras. These differences evidently arise from numerous considerations such as the particular dispositions of sentient beings to be tamed, the distinctions in the thought of aspiration and engagement, and the ultimate thought of enlightenment. Therefore, to stubbornly assert that "this alone is the initial generation of the thought of enlightenment" and to arrange it in a fixed sequence is meaningless. Section D4, Fourth part: [How the Bodhisattva's conduct was practiced in between] also has two points. E1, The Hinayana tradition. E2, The Mahayana tradition. E1, The first point is: The Vaibhashikas assert that perfection is achieved through three countless aeons. On this, the Vinaya and Abhidharma have two different ways of setting the boundary. Regarding the way of practicing the Bodhisattva's conduct in between, in the Vinaya Agama, it is said: "From Shakyamuni Buddha, up to the guide Yulkhor Kyong, during that interval, seventy-five thousand Buddhas, I have worshipped. By abiding for one countless aeon, I have worshipped the Victors." "From Dipankara Buddha, up to Wangpo Gyaltsen Thuba (Indradhvaja), seventy-six thousand Buddhas, I have worshipped."
