After thoroughly explaining its causes and conditions. Chapter Two, elucidating the sequence of how the Teacher, the Subduer (Buddha), appears, is divided into four sections: 1. The manner in which our Teacher traversed the path to enlightenment. 2. The understanding of different vehicles regarding the manner of attaining Buddhahood. 3. The manner in which the Nirmanakaya (Emanation Body) displayed the twelve deeds in this realm. 4. The distinct classification of Buddha bodies and pure lands according to the tradition of the Vajra Peak of Clear Light (Prabhatavajrasikhara Tantra). The first section has five parts: 1. Distinguishing our Teacher particularly from Buddhas in general. 2. Summarizing his liberation biography. 3. The manner of his initial generation of the aspiration (bodhicitta). 4. The manner of engaging in the conduct of a Bodhisattva in between. 5. Incidentally presenting the gradual stages of spiritual faculties. The first part is: From immeasurable victors who guide the world, Amidst the thousand Buddhas appearing in this fortunate eon, The peerless Victor of the Shakyas (Buddha), praised like a white lotus. As long as the expanse of space has not ceased, the expanse of beings to be guided will not cease. Throughout this time, the compassion, aspirations, and enlightened activities of the Buddhas are inexhaustible. Therefore, in immeasurable world realms of the ten directions, the supreme guides among human beings, adorned with the noble name "Tathagata" (Thus-Gone One) such as the Moon Among Humans, Jewel Heart, and countless others beyond description, have appeared before. Currently, in the Abhirati (Manifest Joy) world, Akshobhya (Immovable) Buddha resides; in the Sukhavati (Land of Bliss) world, Amitabha (Boundless Light) Buddha resides; and in the Padmoshri (Glorious Lotus) world, Buddha Shubhakirti (Glorious Virtue) resides, along with countless other Buddhas, who are presently alive and also teaching the Dharma. In the future, in the world realm called "Dustless and Perfectly Accumulated," wondrous Tathagatas, such as the Protector Avalokiteshvara, and other inconceivable and unimaginable "Lions among Humans" who guide the world, will appear in succession. Thus, kalpas in which Buddhas appear are called "Luminous Kalpas," and kalpas in which Buddhas do not appear are called "Dark Kalpas." Dark Kalpas are very numerous, while Luminous Kalpas are rare. After this Fortunate Kalpa passes, sixty-five great Dark Kalpas will pass, and then in a Luminous Kalpa called "Great Renown," ten thousand Buddhas will appear. After that, eighty thousand Dark Kalpas...

In the past, during the Illuminated Kalpa named 'Like a Star,' eighty thousand Buddhas appeared. After three hundred Dark Kalpas passed, in the Illuminated Kalpa named 'Adorned with Qualities,' eighty-four thousand Buddhas appeared, as stated in the Sutra of the Excellent Kalpa (Bhadrakalpika Sutra), among other texts. This is boundlessly mentioned in various scriptures. Specifically, in this Excellent Kalpa known as 'Seeing a Thousand Lotuses,' it is held that countless 'intermediate Buddhas' also appear (60b). The determination of a thousand Buddhas appearing is a common assertion in both Mahayana and Hinayana traditions; these are those who, in the past, when practicing the deeds of a Bodhisattva, had their bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment) and aspirational prayers simultaneously perfected. Furthermore, Hinayana followers believe that during the decline of this world, when the human lifespan decreases from eighty thousand years to one hundred years, Buddhas appear. Earlier than this (lifespan of 80,000 years), beings have little aversion (to cyclic existence) and do not seek the Dharma's meaning, so Buddhas do not appear. Later than this (lifespan of 100 years), the defilements (of the degenerate age) are exceedingly great, so Buddhas do not appear. During the increasing lifespan, unwholesome actions are naturally abandoned and the power of virtue increases, so it is believed that Buddhas are not needed. In this Kalpa, when the lifespan is forty thousand years, Krakucchanda (the first of the thousand Buddhas) appeared. At thirty thousand years, Kanakamuni. At twenty thousand years, Kashyapa. At one hundred years, Shakyamuni Buddha. At eighty thousand years, Maitreya will appear, and so forth. The thirteen aspects of each Buddha—namely, their place, lineage, light, father, mother, son, attendant, chief of wisdom, chief of miraculous powers, retinue, lifespan, duration of their teachings, and relics—are extensively taught in the Sutra of the Excellent Kalpa. Furthermore, it is stated that at the very end of all, the lifespans and activities of all these Buddhas are consolidated into the appearance of a World-Guide (Tathagata) named 'Pleased One' or 'Dipankara' (Buddha). Among them all, there is none who can rival the courage of (our teacher) in taking on disciples in the degenerate age, which all other Buddhas abandoned. Thus, the Victorious Ones and their Children (Bodhisattvas) praised and specifically declared, 'Alas! This Bodhisattva is like a white lotus!' This is none other than our incomparable Teacher, King Shakyamuni. 2. The second part [Summary of his biography] is: Initially, he generated the mind of enlightenment; in the middle, he practiced the deeds (of a Bodhisattva). Finally (incomplete).
