When it manifests internally, acting as the basis for both liberation and delusion, it is called the common ground (spyi gzhi); acting as the basis for liberation, it is the ground of liberation (grol gzhi); acting as the basis for the delusion of sentient beings, it is called the ground of delusion ('khrul gzhi). Thus, although the essence of the foundational appearance (gzhi snang) is one, when differentiated by aspects of liberation and delusion, it exists as three. Here, 'ka' (ཀ་) is the sound referring to 'gzhi' (ground) or 'rtsa ba' (root). It is synonymous with 'primordial' (gdod ma), 'initial' (thog ma), 'from eternity' (ye nas), and so forth. 2. [Elaborating on its Nature]: It abides as endowed with two or three wisdoms. The nature of that primordial purity (ka dag) abides as endowed with two or three wisdoms. According to the first [way, i.e., two wisdoms]: regarding the non-substantive nature of rigpa, in relation to the indivisibility of awareness-emptiness (rig-stong), the primordial pure wisdom (ka dag gi ye shes) of the essence is beyond conceptual thought; and the spontaneously present wisdom (lhun grub kyi ye shes) of the nature abides as profoundly clear primordial resonance (ye gdangs). From the Six Spheres (Klong Drug Pa): The very essence is primordially pure, The nature is spontaneously present. Thus it is said. (52v) In terms of the counter-negation (ldog pa) of the essence, it transcends the extremes of existence and non-existence; and in terms of the counter-negation of the nature, it abides merely as an aspect of the ground of manifestation ('char gzhi). The abiding of these two as indivisible in their own being, liberated from extremes, as the Great Perfection, is explained in: From Self-Liberated Rigpa (Rig Pa Rang Grol): The defilements of the ground and extremes are self-purified. Thus it is said. The abiding as endowed with three wisdoms is: From the Mirror of Vajrasattva's Heart (rDo rje Sems dpa' snying gi me long): 'Know all phenomena of the ground as essence, nature, and compassion (thugs rje).' Because the Dharmakaya abides as the primordially pure essence-kaya, even though it exists as the ground of manifestation where the three kayas are inseparable, there is not even the slightest establishment of marked, distinct faces and hands. Because the clear nature abides as the five lights, even though the three primal resonances (gdangs gsum) are primordially self-luminous, there is no separate establishment into distinct colors and marks. Because compassion abides as the wisdom of rigpa, even though the aspect of knowing is unceasing and distinctly clear, there is no appearance of agent and object, action and actor. These wisdoms exist merely as aspects of the ground of manifestation within the primordially pure primordial ground (ka dag ye gzhi). However, they do not exist coarsely. Therefore, it is appropriate that these two wisdoms arise at the time of Buddhahood. This is explained in: From the Collection (sDud Pa): Without wisdom, there is no increase in good qualities, no bodhi. The Dharma of the Buddha, like an ocean, would also not exist. Thus it is said. Regarding that, when rigpa, the abiding ground, is within the inner expanse, at the time of both beginning and end, profoundly...

From clarity, the body's light is not actually existent; rather, when it manifests, it is accompanied by the resonance of its own light. When it resides within the heart, though it is referred to as a temporary ground, because it emanates from the dharmadhatu into samsara and has not reached the state of liberation, it is still considered a ground appearance. In this regard, like a peacock's egg, the unripened rigpa (awareness) resides within the expanse of the five inherent lights, like a peacock chick. During the time of the four visions of the path (52b), it appears distinctly in space like a rainbow. When those with bodies ultimately reach liberation, the rigpa itself ripens into a form (kaya), like emerging from an egg. Therefore, there is a distinction between the ground of the dharmadhatu and the temporary ground, whether they actually reside in the palace of light or not. Thus, its essence (ngowo) abides as emptiness and clarity inseparable; its nature (rangzhin) abides as clarity and emptiness inseparable; its compassion (thukje) abides as awareness and emptiness inseparable. Its essence is the primordial pure wisdom, abiding like a perfectly clear sky. Its nature is the spontaneously accomplished wisdom, abiding like a limpid ocean. Its compassion is the all-pervading wisdom, abiding like an immaculate jewel. 3. The third part [which presents the eight modes of the ground's appearance] is: From that, the eight doors of spontaneously accomplished ground appearance arise. In this way, when the seal of the primordial ground of the primordially pure dharmadhatu, the youthful vase body, breaks open and the wind of wisdom stirs, the eight doors of spontaneously accomplished self-appearance, manifesting from the root of awareness, appear. Upwards is the appearance of the primordially pure dharmakaya, like a cloudless sky. Directly, the appearance of the luminous pure land of the sambhogakaya pervades the expanse of space. Below its power, there is the great ground appearance. Below its power, further down, there is the appearance of the sambhogakaya, and in the directions and corners, the appearance of the pure land of the natural nirmanakaya. Further down, from the gate of samsara, there are countless pure lands of the self-appearance of the six realms. All these spontaneously arise from the appearance of the eight doors of spontaneous accomplishment, and this is called the simultaneous appearance of the great appearances of samsara and nirvana. When it appears from inner clarity to outer clarity, the appearance of the essence manifests unimpededly and naturally; the appearance of the nature is the primordial five lights; the appearance of compassion, like a cloudless sky, opens up, and from that, self-appearance naturally arises. The eight doors of manifestation. In the *Auspicious and Beautiful Great Tantra*, it states: the manifestation of compassion is unimpeded, (53a) like light.
