Because of the appearances of desirable, undesirable, and neutral objects to consciousness, by perceiving these three as to be adopted, rejected, or treated with equanimity, the aggregate of feeling (vedanā-skandha) arises. By apprehending marks of these objects, whether extensive or subtle, the aggregate of perception (saṃjñā-skandha) arises. By distinctly differentiating various aspects of objects and actively fabricating diverse appearances, the aggregate of formations (saṃskāra-skandha), comprised of various mental factors, is established. Through this, latent predispositions become firm, and by intensely clinging to the essence and characteristics of form, etc., the aggregate of form (rūpa-skandha) is established. This explains the sequence of generation, presented as the order of cause and effect. As stated in the Abhidharmakosha: The sequence is coarse and all defilements. This is not contradictory to the (Abhidharmakosha) stating form (rūpa) first, following the sequence of coarse and subtle, and all defilements. Then, by the intertwining of attachment to objects (49b), longing for them, and grasping for the sake of desired objects, the powerful karma that brings about existence is activated. This leads to continued engagement with rebirth in future existences, and so forth, causing the wheel of confusion in cyclic existence to turn incessantly. This happens because one does not recognize one's own true nature, just as one is deluded by not recognizing an illusion as an illusion, or a dream as a dream. The meaning of the twelve links of dependent origination will be extensively explained later. Third, the manner of cycling in saṃsāra through the three latent predispositions is: In brief, by placing three latent predispositions in the alaya-vijñana, Three types of delusive appearances arise: object, consciousness, and body. To summarize the meaning of the above: by depositing three different mental latent predispositions on the basis of the alaya-vijñana (ground-of-all consciousness), three different delusive appearances arise: objects such as form, etc., the aggregates of consciousness that apprehend them (i.e., meaning), and the latent predispositions appearing as one's own body which does not actually exist. Just as a mirror is covered by dust, the clear light of the mind is obscured, and thus one wanders in cyclic existence. As stated in the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra: Threefold, threefold appearances. The meaning of this statement is clarified by Samantabhadra Nirmalaprabha (Kun tu bzang po dri med 'od zer). The container world, the five objects such as form, etc., The eight aggregates of consciousness, virtuous and non-virtuous actions, The forms of the six realms of beings and their actions, From that arise subject and object, from that arise afflictions, From that, beginningless and endless...

The Establishment of Cyclic Existence. \t\t\tElaborating on this: Due to the power of habitual tendencies concerning objects, the external recipient world, and the five sense objects—forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tangible objects—which are dependent on it, appear to the mind as if they exist externally, even though they do not truly exist either externally or internally. Beings then overtly cling to these as real, taking them as objects of affirmation and refutation. \t\t\tRegarding the clung-to object, the conceptualization that “this is form” as existing externally is called the conceptualization of the grasped (gzung rtog). \t\t\tThe foundation consciousness (alaya-consciousness), the defiled mind (klista-manas), and the six consciousnesses together constitute the eight collections of consciousnesses. \t\t\tThrough these, virtuous actions congruent with merit and non-virtuous actions, sins, are accumulated, creating habitual tendencies in the mind that abide like gold and rust. This is the proliferation of the power of actual habitual tendencies. Because the eight consciousnesses grasp their respective objects, with or without conceptualization, this is called the conceptualization of grasping (dzin rtog). \t\t\tDue to the power of bodily habitual tendencies, the forms of the six classes of beings, which are the basis for the arising of these grasped and grasping aspects, along with their functions and actions, cause beings to cling to “my body” even in dreams, experiencing happiness and suffering. From the proliferation of the power of the three types of habitual tendencies, the illusory appearances of grasped and grasping arise. Engaging in abandonment and adoption with respect to these gives rise to the force of afflictions. These afflictions accumulate karma, thereby establishing this beginningless and endless chain of cyclic existence. Beginningless habitual tendencies generate past lives. The continuity of their habituation creates the present. The continuous habituation of present daily activities, dreams, and so forth, will cause the habitual tendencies related to the objects, meanings, and bodies of future lives to manifest. \t\t\tFourth, incidentally, explaining the way to reverse cyclic existence: \t\t\tIf the root cause and condition of dependent origination are reversed and collapse, \t\t\tDelusion ceases, and one is perfectly connected to supreme liberation. \t\t\tIn this way, if one examines the main cause of all suffering in cyclic existence, old age and death, it arises from birth. Tracing further back, birth arises from grasping and craving, and so on. By progressively examining, one realizes that the root of all is ignorance. Knowing this, and training in the antidotes to abandon it, dependent origination ceases in reverse order. Alternatively, when the cause for wandering in cyclic existence—self-grasping—and co-emergent ignorance are realized through discriminating wisdom as not inherently abiding in their nature, then the foundation of delusion collapses, and the phenomena of illusory appearances...", "notes": "(50ན) and (50བ) are page markers in the original text and are not part of the content to be translated.
