Its nature is held to be emptiness. As it is said, in terms of ultimate reality, cyclic existence, and karma along with its results, are not truly established; they are solely emptiness. However, in terms of conventional appearance, the wheel of the twelve links of dependent origination, arising from the assembly of causes and conditions, turns ceaselessly, revolving again and again on the path of becoming. Aryadeva (Phakzhab) said: From ignorance, up to aging and death, The actions arising from the twelve links of dependent origination, I consider them like a dream or an illusion. This wheel of the twelve links, Turns upon the path of existence. 2. [Specific Explanation]: The root of cyclic existence is attachment to a self. From afflictions arise karma and suffering. This arises from that, appearing like sleep and so forth. In the Pramāṇavārttika, it is stated: If there is a self, then others are known. From the duality of self and other, arise attachment and hatred. Through being entirely connected with these, All faults come into being. As it is stated, the root of cyclic existence and being born therein is this very thought, 'I am,' which is the object of attachment of the innate self-grasping that apprehends 'I' and 'mine'. Based on this, all afflictions such as afflicted views and craving arise. From these, ripening karmic formations are produced. From these, all the sufferings of cyclic existence arise. And from these in turn, due to producing karma and afflictions, the wheel of suffering itself arises again and again. For example, just like a dream induced by sleep, or hairs appearing to one with eye-floaters, though non-existent, they appear truly real. This (page 48b), upon investigation, is solely the magical display of emptiness. Aryadeva (Phakzhab) said: In brief, from phenomena that are empty, Empty phenomena arise. Agent, action, and experiencer of results, The Victorious Ones taught these conventionally. And: Conventional afflictions are produced by karma. Karma arises from mind. Mind is accumulated by imprints (habitual tendencies). Freedom from imprints is bliss. The blissful mind is peace. With a peaceful mind, one will not be deluded.

"By ignorance, one knows suchness, And by knowing suchness, one attains liberation." Thus it is said. Generally, from the first turning of the Dharma wheel, the root of cyclic existence is said to be grasping at a self, and the cause of all suffering is also said to be craving. In the second [turning], there is the proliferation of conceptual elaborations of grasping at characteristics, overtly clinging to subject-object duality; and finally, [in the third turning] the alaya-vijñana itself is said to be the root of cyclic existence. In the Father Tantras of Highest Yoga Tantra, the combination of the four voids and four elements is the root that generates sentient beings; and in the Mother Tantras, it is asserted that cyclic existence arises from the mundane innate or indestructible drop. The meaning of these will be explained in detail gradually. TH2 The second, concerning the eight consciousnesses, is: Beginningless mind itself, empty, luminous, unceasing; Not recognizing its own nature, the formative mind, Stirred, consciousness of dualistic appearance of subject and object arises. Feelings of acceptance and rejection, characteristic-grasping perceptions; By clinging to mental factors and formations, the form aggregate is established. Conjoining craving and grasping, one revolves in the wheel of existence. If one elaborates on this, it is extremely vast. If one wishes to comprehend it, one should clearly understand it from profound inner meaning commentaries such as the 'Illuminator of Profound Meaning' and the commentary revealing the essence, 'Self-Arisen Clear Intent', and so forth. Here, merely the meaning of the words is: From the Abhidharma Sutra (49a): "The beginningless sphere of time, Is the abode of all phenomena; Because this exists, cyclic existence and Nirvana also are attained." As it is stated, its essence is empty, being free from elaborations; its nature is clear, being unobscured; its aspect manifests unceasingly in any form. The naturally pure mind itself, the beginningless dharmadhātu, suchness, whose own nature is not established as anything whatsoever, and whose characteristic is unarising; yet by conceiving a 'self' and 'other' on its unceasing resonance/expression, through the unceasing activity that appears as object and subject, essentially, there is ignorance. By the formative mind acting upon objects, the alaya-vijñana is stirred and moved like water and waves. Although the apprehended object and the apprehending consciousness are not distinct, by appearing as two, they are grasped as self and other. From that, the six consciousnesses that grasp objects as real arise, and from the proliferation of karmic imprints' appearances, gross delusory appearances are established. Consciousness
