The cause that produces unprecedented results; food consumed sustains the body; the supporting cause, like a water vessel supporting (water); that which maintains all existing categories; like causing youth to become maturity; causing what was previously conjoined to separate; making images of gods and humans from gold; proving something to be a compounded phenomenon by the reasoning of having production, cessation, and abiding; attaining results through meditating on the path; projecting to other places and times; causing immediate manifestation to be accomplished; causing interruption; causing any phenomenon to age and become old; causing existing things to enter (into function); ascertaining the presence of fire by the sign of smoke; not ascertaining the presence of fire by the sign of no smoke, and so forth. Its twenty types of differentiation are explained in the Abhidharmasamuccaya. Chapter Two, Part Two [Elucidation of Conditions]: The five causes, and the alaya-consciousness, are causal conditions; The perceived object is the objective condition, and the basis is the dominant condition; The immediately preceding condition is the third mode of intention (desire); When the four conditions are complete, consciousness produces consciousness; Consciousness of two or three can produce material form (inert objects). The co-emergent, similar-status, associated, all-pervading, and ripening (causes) mentioned above are here considered as categories of causal conditions (p. 46). Although not all five causes necessarily become causal conditions, there are some among them that act as causal conditions, hence they are placed here. In the context of Mahayana, the alaya-consciousness itself is primarily explained here as the principal causal condition for appropriating all inner and outer phenomena; this is also identified with the ripening aspect of alaya. The other five causal conditions are, in fact, co-operative conditions. The seen object and the object of apprehension are objective conditions; because the five non-conceptual sense consciousnesses directly perceive their respective objective conditions, such as forms, etc., therefore, they are considered as the perceived objects of that consciousness. As for conceptual consciousnesses, they apprehend that objective support merely in the mode of vivid appearance or as an apprehended aspect of grasping.

For example, just as a vessel that causes water within it to remain without dispersing is a support, similarly, that which acts as the support for all phenomena is the dominant condition. The common dominant condition is the all-ground consciousness (Alayavijñana), and the uncommon dominant condition is the five sense faculties, which are the support for the five sense consciousnesses. Also, for all appearances of external objects, they are the respective supports, abodes, and bases of their own entities. In the Abhidharmasamuccaya, this is taught with nine aspects: Support, projection, co-arising, object, Arising, abiding, result, appropriation, Of mundane and supramundane, Exercising power in perfect purity. Thus it is said. The objective condition and the dominant condition are also included within the efficient cause. There are three ways of asserting the immediately preceding condition: Firstly, the Abhidharmikas assert that it is similar to its own entity, has a single cause, and is immediately past; thus, it possesses three characteristics. (Page 46b) Also, it is asserted to have the function of not obstructing the arising of any phenomenon, making it accessible, and benefitting the result. Also, it is asserted merely as causing consciousness to be directed towards its object. Among these three assertions, in this system, the latter is adopted. Thus, when the four conditions are complete, consciousness produces consciousness, just as a previous eye-consciousness produces a subsequent eye-consciousness. When two or three conditions are complete, consciousness produces material appearances, and matter produces matter. Furthermore, consciousness producing material appearances is produced by means of two complete conditions: the causal condition being the imprints of the all-ground consciousness, and the co-emergent condition. For example, like formative factors projecting future rebirth. Matter producing matter involves two complete conditions. For those who assert the immediately preceding condition as being of a similar previous kind, that too is complete, and thus it arises from three conditions. Third, [Explanation of Results]: Cessation without cause is resultant cessation, Included by external objects is the dominant result, Included by the continuum of sentient beings is the ripening result, Efficient result of efficient cause is homogeneous and concordant. Cessation that is without a producing cause is called resultant cessation.
