The classification of gathered causes. Twenty (types) are explained as compiled from all Abhidharma (treatises). In the Mahayana tradition, although the names of causes, conditions, and effects are similar, their modes of assertion are slightly different, therefore, they will be explained separately: That cause which produces an effect, because it is definitively a cause, is called the efficient cause or the substantial cause. For instance, just as two siblings are initially born from one mother and subsequently remain inseparably mutually beneficial, that which initially arises from one and also subsequently remains inseparably (folio 44b) in a mutually beneficial manner is called the co-emergent cause or the assisting cause. Here, from the three causes: external, internal, and both: The first (is): the four elements (earth, water, fire, wind) and the derived phenomena. Because each atom of the four elements is endowed with eight subtle constituents (color, smell, taste, touch, and the four elements themselves), from the first moment of an earth atom ceasing, the second moment of a water atom arising is also simultaneous in time. Those phenomena which possess a slight preceding and succeeding cause and effect arise from a single producing cause and dwell as a single collection. Derived phenomena are, for example, like the taste of molasses and form. The second (is): mind and mental factors becoming mutual cause and effect, and because they arise from a single cause and dwell simultaneously. The third (is): like establishing the referent with reference to the definition, they become mutual cause and effect. This is imputed cause and effect. The amplifying cause or the concordant cause is: from a virtuous cause, a virtuous effect; from a non-virtuous cause, a non-virtuous effect; from an indeterminate cause, an indeterminate effect. Because this is the meaning of amplification or increase, it is also called the similar cause. Furthermore, this requires similarity in realm and similarity in nature. For example, from the affliction of attachment in the desire realm, it is not like producing afflictions of the two higher realms. Rather, because it must produce afflictions of the desire realm from it, the realm must be similar. And afflictions are also not of a different type; rather, from the cause of attachment, the effect of attachment must be produced, meaning the type must be similar. The cause of concordant apprehension, or that which is known as the co-existent cause because it is concordant with the four similar causes, is: the principal mind and the two accompanying mental factors that produce...

That is, their causes are similar, their observed objects (ālambana) are similar, the continuum of that observed object (45a) is similar, and their mode of apprehension (ākāra) is the same or similar. For example, just as the eye-consciousness arises from the power of the ripening of the habitual tendencies of the all-ground consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna) which is its immediately preceding condition (upādāna-kāraṇa), or from the first moment of a similar type of consciousness, similarly, a mental factor like feeling, which is concomitant with it, also arises from that same cause. Just as the eye-consciousness apprehends form as its causal condition (ālambana-pratyaya), the mental factor of feeling also apprehends it. Just as the sphere of activity of the eye-consciousness is included within the continuum of that individual, the mental factor of feeling is also included within it. And just as the eye-consciousness has the mode of apprehension that apprehends the aspect of form, the mental factor of feeling also has the mode of apprehension that apprehends form. Therefore, mind and mental factors are similar through four kinds of similarity. That which generates afflictions from afflictions is the all-pervading cause. Its meaning is that it pervades all three realms. It is also called an obstructing cause because it hinders an individual from attaining liberation. For example, from the cause of hatred, the fruit of desire arises, and from hatred, pride arises. Similarly, the fruit of afflictions in the desire realm can serve as the basis for afflictions in the upper two realms. Therefore, its category, stage, and so forth are not fixed. Ripening (vipāka) is the body. The cause that generates it is called the ripening cause, and the cause that completely sustains that body is also explained as the sustaining cause. From wholesome defiled (sāsrava-kuśala) and unwholesome actions as causes, indeterminate (avyākata) results arise. For example, from unwholesome ripening causes, the aggregates of beings in hell are produced. Although the experience of various sufferings in hell is propelled by unwholesome actions, (45b) the aggregates that serve as the physical basis are exclusively indeterminate. Similarly, even if one is propelled to be born as a god by wholesome defiled actions, the aggregates of the gods' ripening are not wholesome but are exclusively indeterminate. In general, if all causes are summarized, they are encompassed solely within the acting cause. Since that which functions to produce the result is an acting cause, acting causes that are powerless are not accepted in this context.
