Attainment, upon exhausting within the nature of reality, will perfectly engage with the supreme bliss of liberation. Ta2. Second, the specific explanation according to the system of Clear Light Great Perfection (Dzogchen) has two parts: Tha1. Introduction; and Tha2. The actual subject matter. Tha1. First, it is about: The distinguished supreme yoga system, the pinnacle of vehicles. It is especially superior to all explanations of the causes and conditions of delusion and liberation found in the common vehicles. The pinnacle of the nine vehicles is Atiyoga; the very system of supreme yoga will be briefly explained, because the crucial points of the path and fruit of this system, which will be expounded, must be drawn from it. Tha2. Second, [the actual subject matter] has four parts: Da1. The abiding state of the base, reality, and nature; Da2. From that, the manner of sentient beings' delusion; Da3. How the base pervades during delusion; Da4. Additionally, the dwelling place of pristine awareness and the manner in which delusion is reversed. Da1. The first has three parts: Na1. Presenting the six flawed bases that grasp at extremes concerning knowable objects; Na2. Explaining the faultless primordial pure base of the abiding nature; Na3. From that, presenting the eight ways in which the base's appearances arise. Na1. First, it is about: The six flawed abiding states of the primordial base. Before realized Buddhas arose, and before unenlightened sentient beings arose, what was the abiding state of the primordial, initial base like? According to the Dzogchen system, this is presented with the intention of following (refuting) the six flawed established views. Namely: asserting the base as spontaneously present; asserting it as indefinite; asserting it as definitely the ultimate reality; asserting it as transformable into anything; asserting it as affirmable anywhere; and asserting it as variegated with diverse aspects. Thus, these six aspects are taught as biased and flawed bases (51na). The reason for this is that if the assertion of the base as spontaneously present implies that both faults and qualities are primordially and spontaneously present phenomena, then it contradicts primordial purity, the path becomes unpracticable, and even if practiced, liberation becomes impossible, which is a flaw. For the assertion of the base as indefinite, if the base is indefinite and whatever the mind imputes becomes that, then even after liberation, delusion would arise, which is a flaw. For the assertion of the base as definite, if it is such that it cannot be transformed, then the defilements of ignorance would also not be purified, which is a flaw. Etc.

If one insists on what is subject to change, then because it is impermanent, there is the fault that the fruit of liberation reverts back to its cause. If one insists on what can be asserted anywhere, then because phenomena are boundless, the ground also becomes boundless; and there is the fault that one must admit both permanence and nihilism. If one insists on diversity, it is not suitable as the ground for true perfect liberation; because such a manifold collection of thoughts is not suitable as the ground of primordial purity, this fault exists. Thus, these six grounds are flawed, partisan, and divisive. Therefore, they are not considered the ground in this context; because all of them have only understood one aspect of the true nature. 2. [Explanation of the flawless ground of primordial purity as the true nature] has two parts: 1. Identification of the essence of primordial purity. 2. Detailed explanation of its nature. 1. The first is: The flawless primordial purity is the universal ground of liberation and delusion. Liberated from the mental defects of conceptual fabrication of diversity. When considered from the perspective of an individual who grasps the path of the flawless primordial pure ground, it is called the primordial purity of the primeval ground. This is also the great inexpressible, inconceivable, transcending the extremes of existence and non-existence. Its essence is primordially pure, thus free from the extreme of permanence (existence), and not established as a phenomenon or characterized entity. (51b) Its nature is spontaneously accomplished, thus transcending the extreme of nihilism (non-existence). It is the perfectly pure dharmata of clear light and emptiness. It is the primordially enlightened nature, the unchanging wisdom of the Dharmakaya, not established in either cyclic existence or nirvana. The great primordial spontaneously arising wisdom of emptiness has existed like space from the very beginning. If one says, 'If it is primordially pure, it is not reasonable for sentient beings to be deluded in cyclic existence,' then the answer is: Since it is primordially liberated, there is no inherent characteristic of defilement to be purified again, and there is no inherent characteristic of delusion and liberation. Just like the liberation and delusion in a dream, since it has never been established as real from the very moment it appeared as mere play of awareness, there is no fault in it being primordially pure. If one says, 'If it is spontaneously accomplished, the fruit is already accomplished, and sentient beings would be effortlessly liberated,' then the answer is: Since it is spontaneously accomplished, even though the body of the basic space and the nature of wisdom are perfectly pure from the very beginning, just like waking from sleep, there is a part where the primordial state becomes manifest from the aspect of sudden freedom from defilement, hence there is no fault. From that state, the base appears...
