When contemplating, one contemplates blue. The blue appearance (39b) is the agent of sense consciousness. From blue, the form of blue is created. This is because the agent and the acted upon are of one substance. In the contemplation of objects by consciousness, among the three — agent, object, and action — there are two established ones. Since the former (the first of the two established ones) is to be applied to the manner in which the container world (or objective world) is formed, taking that into account, what is the initial agent, similar to a potter? From the *Madhyamakāvatāra* (Entering the Middle Way): “By mind itself, sentient beings' world and the vastly diverse container world are established. All beings without exception are said to be born from karma. Without mind, karma too does not exist.” As stated, generally, sentient beings, and specifically those who accumulate similar karma to be born in that very world realm, their minds, and primarily their clear light mind itself. So what is the agent that is comparable to thread and so forth? From the clear light mind, when it associates with the three: semen, particles, and wind, the three appearances arise; from that, the eighty innate conceptualizations are born. When the imprints of virtuous and non-virtuous karma accumulated by these (conceptualizations) are impregnated upon the mind and are about to ripen as objects, the mere karmic appearance of these sentient beings, which is the wind of the nature of consciousness, completely abandons one world realm and then wanders, entering the empty space of a previously empty world realm in order to form other world realms. For example, just as the life-wind of a person abandons a dead body and wanders, entering the door of a womb in order to take another body, that very act is established as the agent for the formation of a human body. So what is the action (or material cause) like clay? At the very moment when the world realm is empty (40a), scattered subtle particles exist, which are not visible to the eyes of ordinary beings but are visible to the eyes of yogis. And its basis is called the wind of the nature of consciousness. For example, when a human body is formed, the father's semen, mother's blood, and the ten winds (internal winds) together are established as the internal 'material' for that formation. Those scattered subtle particles, being merely appearances of mental imprints and not objects of the senses, are therefore named "empty."
