From names, strings of words arise; Upon examination, they are unattached and unreal. The constituents of a name are individual letters, such as the vowel 'A' and the consonant 'Ka', etc. When two or three or more of these combine, a name is formed. For example, the combination of 'Dha' and 'Ī' forms (དྷཱིཿ,धीः,dhīḥ,wisdom), meaning wisdom; or the combination of three consonants and two vowels forms (བུདྡྷ་,बुद्ध,Buddha, awakened one), meaning the Buddha. When many names combine, strings of words are formed. For example, (ན་མོ་བུདྡྷ་ཡ།,नमो बुद्धाय, Namo Buddhāya, Homage to the Buddha), meaning "I prostrate to the Buddha." However, letters are the basis for names, but do not convey meaning themselves; names convey meaning, and words convey distinctions of meaning. Upon careful examination, no matter how many or how few they are, and however they combine, their nature is unattached and unadhering, the individual letters remain unmixed. Just as a thick rope, upon closer inspection, consists of individual strands of hair; or a bunch of horsehair, when seen closely, is individual hairs; or a meadow, when observed, is individual blades of grass (37b)—similarly, they are not truly established, but like a moon in water or eye-floaters, from the very moment of their appearance, they exist in an unreal nature. The chapter on the special features of the Kālacakra system and the explanation of measurement standards. The commentary on the third chapter, which explains the special features of the Kālacakra system and the explanation of measurement standards. Chapter Four: The Chapter on Explaining the Causes and Conditions for the Arising of Samsara. 4.4 The fourth chapter, explaining the causes and conditions of the receptacle world (container) and its inhabitants (contained), has two parts: 1. Introduction; 2. Actual explanation. "From what cause did the world arise?" Thus, it is introduced by raising this question. 4.2 [Second part] The actual discussion has two parts: 1. Refutation of externalist tenets; 2. Establishment of our own tenet. 4.1 The first part is: "Ishvara, sages, self, and primordial nature, Externalists speak falsely, saying they arise from these." From the scriptures of the Ishvara-vādins: "If Ishvara is not like a potter creating all these various things, Then this earth would not be formed, this Mount Meru would not exist, nor would the oceans. The arrangements of the sun, moon, and stars would not appear to the eye. Because they exist, some say that Ishvara is the creator of beings." Therefore, these worlds of the container and the contained, Ishvara (the original Tibetan text cuts off here).

Some assert that the world was created by Ishvara, like a potter. Furthermore, those who propound the secret teachings of the Veda (Vedanta or Upanishad) say that beneath all worlds there exists a great sage named 'Sun-colored' (Nyimé Dog), and he created all worlds; (As mentioned previously,) regarding these container-world and sentient-being worlds, some assert that they were created by Ishvara, like a potter. Furthermore, those who propound the secret teachings of the Veda say that beneath all worlds there exists a great sage named 'Sun-colored', and he created all worlds; Some assert that everything originated from the 'self' (Atman) or the 'principal' (Prakriti/Purusha or Pradhana). The Nihilists (Ucchedavada) assert that all container-world and sentient-being worlds arose without cause, by their own nature. It is said: What the good lady of vast learning says, Is like the deceptive howl of a wolf. Who created the lotus's filaments? Who painted the peacock's patterns? Who sharpened the piercing thorns? All arose spontaneously, without cause, by their own nature. As stated above, the various mistaken assertions made by the eternalist and nihilist (non-Buddhist) teachers, conceived with a deluded mind, are like blind people discussing the shape of a kingdom (or geographical features); they do not apprehend the truth and thus wander astray. Chapter 2 [Establishing One's Own System] has three parts: 1. General explanation of causes; 2. Specific explanation of the causes of the container-world; 3. Explanation of common enabling conditions. The first part (of the above) has two: 1. How things are accomplished through karma; 2. Explaining its basis. The first (sub-part): The Sutras state that from various karmas, along with latent defilements (anusaya), The container-world and sentient-being worlds arise. In the sacred Sutras of the Tathagata's teachings, regarding who created these container-worlds and sentient-being worlds, (it is answered that) they were not created by Ishvara or any other agent with prior deliberation. From karma, various worlds arise. As it is said, all container-worlds and sentient-being worlds arise from common and uncommon karma accompanied by latent defilements (anusaya) or (more broadly) afflictions (klesha). The second (sub-part) [Explaining the Basis of Karma]: The basis of karma, its accumulated (results) are not lost; (This is) the continuum of mind-consciousness and the Alaya-vijñana (storehouse consciousness).
