The Buddha did not, by not perceiving the vessel world and the sentient world as truly existent, cling to one extreme, establish this as the sole tradition, and then teach it. Rather, he taught based on the varying dispositions, inclinations, and faculties (inferior and superior) of sentient beings to be tamed, so all of it is merely truth. Nevertheless, by virtue of the key principle of integrating the outer, inner, and other three, please understand this tradition to be supremely excellent. C2. The second main part, explaining the measures of measurement, has two sections: Ch1. Introduction, Ch2. Actual explanation. Ch1. First is: “Also, the distinctions of those measuring units.” Thus, it is introduced. Ch2. [Second] There are two: J1. Kalachakra's own tradition, J2. Incidentally explaining the Abhidharma tradition. J1. First is: Eight subtle atoms, one fine atom, likewise, Hair-tip, *ke tshe*, louse, barley, to finger-joint. Twenty-four (fingers) a cubit, four cubits a bow-span, Two thousand bows form a krosa, four krosas become a yojana. Regarding the vessel world and the sentient world, the establishment of these measures is: eight subtle atoms constitute one fine atom; similarly, a hair's tip, a *ke tshe* (fluff), a louse, a barley grain, and a finger-joint—these seven units, each preceding one being eight times the preceding in width, form the width of the succeeding one. Twenty-four finger-joints constitute one cubit; four cubits constitute one bow; two thousand bows constitute one krosa (རྒྱང་གྲགས་); and four krosas constitute one yojana (དཔག་ཚད་). By these, the measure of the world realm is established. J2. The second part has two sections: Ny1. Brief explanation, Ny2. Detailed explanation. Ny1. First is: “When form manifests, it is distinguished by name.” Thus, the Abhidharmikas, by distinguishing between object, time, action, measure, form, time, and name at their ultimate limits, summarize and teach. Therefore, this will also be explained incidentally. Ny2. The second part has three sections: Ta1. First, the limit of form is: “The limit of form: seven subtle atoms, one fine atom. (36 verso)” Similarly, (particles the size of) iron, water, rabbit (hair), sheep (wool), and ox (hair), Sun-mote, mustard seed, louse, barley, finger-joint. Twenty-four (finger-joints), one cubit, those four (cubits) a bow-span, A bow-span, it is known, five hundred (bow-spans) makes one krosa. That measure (krosa), those eight make one yojana. That

Measuring up to the three-thousandfold world system. This means: Seven ultimate subtle particles form one subtle particle. Seven of those form one iron particle. Seven of those form one water particle. Seven of those form one rabbit particle. Seven of those form one sheep particle. Seven of those form one ox particle. Seven of those form one sunbeam particle. Seven of those form one louse egg. Seven of those form one louse. Seven of those form one barley grain. Seven of those form one middle finger joint. Twenty-four finger joints make one cubit. Four cubits make one bow-span, or one fathom. Five hundred bow-spans/fathoms make one *gyang grags* (a distance); such a distance from a village is called a *dgon pa* (monastery/hermitage). Half a *gyang grags* closer than that is called a *bas mtha'* (wilderness boundary). Eight *gyang grags* make one *dpag tshad* (yojana), which is four thousand bow-spans/fathoms. By this, it is possible to compose and measure from Mount Meru, the king of mountains, up to the three-thousandfold world system. Second, the measurement of time: One part of a snap of the fingers, divided into sixty-four, is the ultimate instant of time, which has one hundred and twenty. Sixty of those instants make one *thang cig* (a short period). Thirty *thang cig* make one *yud tsam* (moment); thirty *yud tsam* make one day-night. Thirty day-nights make one month; twelve months make one year. From calculable numbers up to immeasurable numbers can be established. When a strong man snaps his fingers, sixty-four instants pass, and one part of that is the ultimate instant of time. Some also say sixty. One hundred and twenty ultimate instants make one *de'i skad cig* (its instant). Sixty of those instants make one *thang cig*. Since there are nine hundred *thang cig* in one day-night, it is one nine-hundredth of a day-night. Thirty *thang cig* make one *yud tsam*. Thirty *yud tsam* make one day-night. Thirty day-nights make one month. Twelve months make one year. These sequentially revolve in the four continents and eight sub-continents, totaling twelve. This is the activity of the twelve outer and inner sense sources, and the twelve interdependent originations, also becoming the sequence of the twelve zodiac houses. In such numerical places, the wise can establish the principle of measuring time, the lifespan of beings, and so on, from calculable numbers like hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, up to immeasurable numbers beyond sixty numerical places. Third, the measurement of names: The measurement of names, from the aggregation of individual letters...
