From there. Therefore, when (the world) is divided into three southern continents, three western continents, three northern continents, and three eastern continents, their names are simply called the eastern, central, and western southern continents. This does not adopt names like “Drum-shaped” (Rnga-yab) and so forth, as in Abhidharma, nor does it accept minor subsidiary continents here. --- J.5 The Fifth \[Explanation of the Six Regions of Small Jambudvipa\]: South of Small Jambudvipa is the Noble Land. From there, successively to the north, are Tibet and Li. China, Shambhala, and the abode of the Snowy Ones. It is stated that the three southern continents constitute the Small Jambudvipa, and within the central southern continent, which is divided into three parts (folios 30b), there are six regions. The first is the Noble Land, which includes Vajrasana (Bodh Gaya), where Bodhisattvas generate vajra-like samadhi, together with Magadha, Vaishali, Shravasti, Kapilavastu, Kushinagar, and Champa—these six cities. It is also filled with many provinces such as Bengal, Kaushambi, and Kashmir. The second is Tibet, the land protected by the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. The third is Li Yul (Khotan), a land formed from the tears of Arya Shariputra and Vaishravana, where the stupa Goma Sala Gandha resides. The fourth is China, a land adorned by four great mountains, including the Five-Peaked Mountain (Mount Wutai), where Arya Manjushri dwells in the form of a young boy. The fifth is Shambhala, a land nurtured by thirty-two Kalki Dharma Kings, emanations of Bodhisattvas and wrathful deities, possessing ninety-seven million principal cities, with Kalapa as the chief. The sixth is Gangden (Himalayan region), a great snowy mountain located in the northern corner of this Jambudvipa, connected to the snows north of Shambhala. --- J.6 The Sixth \[Explanation of the Abodes of Beings\]: Eleven in the desire realm, sixteen in the form realm, four (in the formless realm). Upon these thirty-one existences are based. In this tantra, the method of counting sentient beings also differs from the common approach: there are eleven in the desire realm, sixteen in the form realm, and four in the formless realm, which are the thirty-one existences previously explained.

These (realms) are said to be based upon Mount Meru and similar (entities). Firstly, there are eleven (realms) in the Desire Realm. Their summary is: Hells, hungry ghosts, animals, Humans and asuras, six desire gods. So it is said. (31a) Regarding the conditions of these (desire realms): from the thickness of the four fundamental mandalas below, divided in half, the lower half of the earth mandala is divided into seven parts from top to bottom, sequentially: Crushed, sand, mud-water, Smoke, fire, great darkness, Great wailing, thus seven types. The eighth, Vajra Fire Blaze hell, although not separate from the seventh (hell), is placed there due to distinct sensations of suffering. The upper half of the earth mandala is also divided into two parts: above are the asuras, below are the nagas. Humans reside in the continents of enjoyment and action. The abodes of hungry ghosts and animals are not separately explained here. The six desire gods are: Between the shoulder of Mount Meru and the earth boundary are the Four Great Kings. Above Mount Meru are the Thirty-Three (heavens). Above that, where the neck is cut into three parts, the lower four divisions are: Those Free from Strife (Yama), Joyful (Tushita), Delighting in Transformation (Nirmanarati), and Controlling Others' Transformations (Paranirmitavaśavartin). Secondly, in the Form Realm, there are sixteen (abodes): At the four parts of Mount Meru's forehead, sequentially: Akaniṣṭha, Sudarśana, Atapa, Avṛha; these are the four wind (heavens). Bṛhatphala, Puṇyaprasava, Anabhraka, Śubhakṛtsnā; these are the four fire (heavens). Kosa Koli, Apramāṇaśubhā, Parīttaśubhā, Ābhāsvarā, Apramāṇābhā; these are the four water (heavens). At the two-thirds part of the neck: Parīttābhā, Mahābrahmā, Brahmā-purohita, Brahmā-pāriṣadya; these are the four earth (heavens). Thirdly, in the Formless Realm, there are four (abodes): From the crown of Mount Meru to the hairline, sequentially: Infinitude of Space, Infinitude of Consciousness, Nothingness, and the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. It is said that beings reside in these four spheres. Such a world realm comprises thirty-one existences (bhavas). These, encompassed by the three realms, also have an earlier and later sequence of formation. The three realms are the dharma-nature of mind, speech, and body. In the order of origination, first the Formless Realm formed, then the Form Realm, and then the Desire Realm. The Desire Realm also formed in that sequence: below the earth, on the earth, and above the earth, sequentially.
