My actions change amidst various rises and declines. Then, if one thinks this continent is inferior to others? Not so. The other three continents are lands where one enjoys the fruits of past actions, and since new karma cannot be accumulated there, they are inferior. Jambudvipa is the land of karma, and therefore, beings born on this continent, whatever actions they perform, their power is great, and they are easily tamed by discourses on impermanence and so forth, thus generating weariness (of cyclic existence). For this reason, our Teacher and other supreme emanations of the Guides (Buddhas, Bodhisattvas) also demonstrated the manner of attaining Buddhahood here and teach the Dharma here, thus Jambudvipa is especially exalted above other continents. From the *Sati-upasthana Sutra* (or a text on recollection): "Among the three continents, this is the land of karma. Here is where the ten paths of virtuous action are contemplated. Here is where Buddhas arise. Here is where the four rough actions of human abodes are performed (22b). Here is where the ten paths of virtuous action are definitely contemplated and thoroughly examined. Here is the abode of pure conduct (brahmacarya). Here is where death and birth are contemplated. Here exists the Vajra Seat made of vajra." Among the four human abodes, this Jambudvipa is the foremost of all, so it is stated. The beings here emerged from radiant gods, By craving, meditative bliss food etc. gradually declined, Sun and moon appeared, the great revered king arose, The four seasons in sequence, and four castes became distinct. As for the human beings of this continent, initially, a deity from the Abhasvara (Radiant Light) realm, having passed away, was spontaneously born here. Thereafter, they gradually spread, from the second and third [generations] onwards, until they became very numerous, all spontaneously born just like the former (Abhasvara deities). They could move through the sky, and their bodies were luminous, living on the food of meditative bliss, like beings in the Form Realm. Later, a white earth-essence appeared, with a taste like honey. They ate much of it, and due to their craving for it, the food of meditative bliss and (and so forth) magical powers diminished, and that earth-essence also disappeared. Then, reddish-yellow earth-ointment (earth-skin) appeared, and after eating it, they developed craving. Along with that, the luminosity of their bodies also gradually diminished. At that time, due to the common karma and the natural law of existence, the sun and moon also appeared in the world. Similarly...

The earth's essence and the sprouting plants also disappeared. Husk-free rice (sāluka), if harvested in the morning, would regrow in the evening, and after people ate it, waste products such as feces and urine also appeared. Due to these coarse solid foods, the male and female organs appeared separately, and gradually they became attached to each other and engaged in sexual misconduct. Others then criticized and reproached them by scattering dust and so on, so they felt ashamed and considered it improper. Thus, they abstained from misconduct for seven days (23a) and so forth. Some people with greater sins, in order to conceal their shame, also built houses. Thereafter, due to accumulation, the uncultivated rice also disappeared, and rice with husks appeared, which also needed to be harvested. As people became exhausted tilling the fields, theft also occurred later, leading to disputes. Therefore, among these people, one person renowned for his good looks and great merit was appointed as the lord of the fields. Everyone respected him and offered him a portion (of grain), and he was the King Maha Sammata (the Great Elect). After the first king appeared, from that point on, this lineage was called Kshatriya, either because they were the lords of the fields or because they protected (beings) from decline. Thereafter, as people's sins gradually increased, they disobeyed the king's commands; even when admonished, they did not listen, leading to killing. Consequently, lying due to fear and other such behaviors arose. Gradually, at the end of the flourishing of the five degenerations, kalpas of disease, weapons, and famine appeared, and the division into the sequence of the four ages/seasons occurred. Firstly, that age was called the Krita Yuga (Perfect Age). After males and females engaged in sexual intercourse and taking what is not given, the prosperity of the container world and its inhabitants, originally divided into four parts, diminished by one part, becoming the Treta Yuga (Three-part Age). Due to speaking lies, when two parts of the prosperity diminished, it became the Dvapara Yuga (Two-part Age). With the complete perfection of non-virtuous paths, including killing, even the remaining one part gradually diminished, leading to its transformation into the Kali Yuga (Contention Age). Human beings also gradually divided into four castes. Firstly, from the lineage of King Maha Sammata, the Kshatriya caste emerged. Then, from those who became disillusioned by household faults, the Brahmin (23b) caste arose. (This is a term from Zhangzhung language, which is difficult to explain definitively in Tibetan; most words of this type are corruptions of Indian or Chinese languages, and from other regions...)
