Most of us in the higher realms experience solely the results of previously accumulated wholesome and unwholesome karma (21a), hence our lifespan, enjoyments, happiness, suffering, and so forth are fixed. However, although animals experience the results of unwholesome karma, their lifespan and so on are not fixed. For example, great Nagas and others can live for as long as one kalpa (eon) at the longest, while tiny insects and others live for merely an instant at the shortest. Their body forms and appearances are innumerable and unfixed. Domesticated animals cared for by humans are somewhat happy, whereas those born in the dark inter-continental regions suffer ceaselessly without respite. The six hells, starting from the Reviving Hell, are arranged in ascending order. The lifespans of the six desire realm gods, applied in ascending order, last for that many years, counting one day of the desire realm gods as a day in the hells. For example, the lifespan of the Reviving Hell is like 500 years, taking one day of the Four Great Kings as a day; the Utterly Hot Hell lasts for half a kalpa; the Avīci Hell is said to last for one kalpa. Among the cold hells, the lifespan of the Blistering Hell is equal to the time it takes for a full measure of sesame seeds from Magadha to be exhausted, by removing one seed every hundred years. The other cold hells progressively increase by twenty-fold from the preceding one. Hungry ghosts live for 500 years, counting one human month as one day. In the Bhūmi, it is stated that the bodies and lifespans of the Asuras are similar to those of the Trayastrimsa gods. The three lower realms have unfixed body sizes. The humans of Pūrvavideha are eight cubits tall compared to the people of Jambudvipa. Progressively, those in Aparagodānīya and Uttarakuru should be understood to be twice as large. The six desire realm gods, in ascending order, range from one-fourth of a Yojana to six. Also, their lifespans are: Pūrvavideha humans live for 250 years; Aparagodānīya humans live for 500 years; Uttarakuru humans live for 1000 years. The Four Great Kings live for 500 years, taking 50 human years as one day (21b); the Trayastrimsa gods live for 1000 years, counting 100 human years as one day, and so on, progressively doubling for each higher realm, up to the Paranirmita-vaśavartin. As for the form realm beings, they live for kalpas equal to the measured number of Yojana of their respective bodies. Brahmakāyika beings live for half a kalpa, up to the Akaniṣṭha beings who live for 16,000 kalpas.

Thus. The four formless realms, such as the realm of infinite space, successively sustain life for twenty thousand, forty thousand, sixty thousand, and eighty thousand kalpas. These kalpas, thus enumerated, are great kalpas from the realm of Lesser Light (Abhāsvara) upwards, and those below are considered half a great kalpa. Section 2 [Special Explanation of Jambudvīpa]: Here, life, enjoyments, and body are not fixed; From immeasurable (lifespan) to a decrease to ten (years); And then increasing to eighty thousand (years), and so on. In the eighteen intermediate cycles of the initial and final long periods, There is increase and decrease, and the three continents are lands of enjoyment. Jambudvīpa is the land of karma, especially supreme. Specifically, in this Jambudvīpa, because it is primarily a place for experiencing the results of actions (karma), the length of life, the rise and decline of enjoyments, the size of bodies, and so on, are not fixed. Initially, from a lifespan of immeasurable years, it gradually becomes a state of countable lifespan. Finally, at the end of that long kalpa of decrease to a lifespan of ten years, it is completed by the kalpa of the three (calamities): famine, disease, and weapons. Moreover, when the lifespan is thirty years, the kalpa of famine lasts seven years, seven months, and seven days; when the lifespan is twenty years, the kalpa of disease lasts seven months and seven days; and when the lifespan is ten years, the kalpa of weapons lasts seven days. This entire period is called the long initial period (Ya-thog Ring-mo). After that, from a lifespan of ten years, it increases to eighty thousand years. The increase and decrease from eighty thousand (years) to ten (years) is one cycle. There are eighteen such intermediate cycles, called the eighteen intermediate cycles. At the end of each of these, it is completed by the three (calamities) of famine, disease, and weapons. Finally, there is the long final period (Ma-thog Ring-mo) of increase from ten (years) to eighty thousand (years). These are collectively called the twenty intermediate kalpas. The two solitary kalpas at the extremes have slow increase and decrease, and according to commentaries such as *Gang Spel*, they are said to be equal in duration to each intermediate cycle. In the *Sāyi Ngözhi* (Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra), the two extremes are also explained as cycles. Kunkhyen Longchenpa (Longchen Rabjam) stated that during the decrease of the 'long final period' (Ma-thog Ring-mo) when the lifespan increases to immeasurable years, and when it reaches the beginning of the countable (lifespan), a Buddha of aspiration appears. This view is considered consistent with the Mahayana's own tradition. Thus, the two long periods, the initial and the final, along with the eighteen intermediate cycles, the lifespan and physical body of beings...
