For that nature, co-emergent ignorance acts as a concomitant cause. The latent predispositions of subject and object awaken, and initially, in the three realms of existence, the four immaterial attainments (formless realms) such as the realm of neither perception nor non-perception appear. Then, the form realm and the desire realm, etc., are gradually established, so it is asserted. In brief, sentient beings spread progressively downwards from above, ultimately forming the hell realms. Second, the extensive explanation. Furthermore, there are four immaterial attainments, Merely distinctions of meditative absorption, without a dwelling body. Indeed, in the formless realm, they are known as the four immaterial attainments. Although it would be good to explain them progressively downwards as some holy beings do, in accordance with the manner of birth in samsara, here, for the sake of easy understanding, if explained progressively upwards: Initially, during the practice of meditative absorption (samapatti), one perceives boundlessness like space, and because that path itself arises and spreads, the resultant birth is also named after it: the attainment of boundless space. Similarly, perceiving consciousness as boundless, (this is) the attainment of boundless consciousness. Perceiving nothing whatsoever exists, (this is) the attainment of nothingness. Perception is like illness, tumors, and pain. Perceiving non-perception as utter delusion, and other movements of perception arise, these are the four attainments of neither perception nor non-perception. These, too, initially, at the time of delusion, spread from above downwards. When revolving back and forth, one is born into whichever of the four mental states of attainment was previously established as a basis. Some, having attained a higher (state), may also gradually fall from lower to lower (states). Some, from whatever they have attained, may also transfer to other existences, so it is not definite. However, mostly, having attained these four formless (realms), there is a greater tendency to fall gradually into lower and lower (states). At the time of death, from the peak of existence, the meditative absorption of neither perception nor non-perception, merely by perceiving the perception of nothingness, it becomes somewhat grosser than before. That very (perception), due to its pleasant feeling, one becomes attached to its nature, and thus falls into it. Similarly, at the time of death of consciousness, the mind of boundless space arises, experiencing its taste, it is a birth accompanied by it. From before, the meditative absorption...

By abiding in its nature and extensively habituating oneself to it for a long time, the mind's attainment there is extremely easy. Thus, the four formless realms are merely designated by distinctions of meditative absorption (samadhi); they have no fixed location and no measurable bodies, therefore they cannot be designated as upper or lower. For those who attain such absorption in any realm and then pass away, they are immediately established there. Here, some Abhidharma scholars assert that the formless realms have locations stacked above the Akanishtha Heaven, and also possess form. The term 'formless' is interpreted as a negation applied to what is inferior (in form). Moreover, the *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* (or *Flower Garland Sūtra*) states: 'The formless realms possess objects, possess bases, possess supports, possess shapes.' Such phrases repeatedly appear, indicating the existence of a vessel-world (outer environment) in the formless realms. Similarly, according to the intention of the old translation Great Perfection Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Tantra, and the views of Vimalamitra and Padmasambhava, (beings) also abide in the sky superior to form, supported by samadhi bodies in the four kinds of skies such as the sky of piled lotuses. The Form Realm's four Dhyanas contain the five Pure Abodes, And three abodes for ordinary beings, with three subdivisions in each of the lower three Dhyanas. The Form Realm is so called because it is free from attachment to the desire realm but not yet free from form. Internally, it has seventeen abodes, which, when grouped into categories, are known as the four Dhyanas. In the Fourth Dhyana are the five Pure Abodes (such as Akanishtha, etc.) (19b), and the three abodes for ordinary beings, such as the Great Fruit realm. In the Third Dhyana are the extensively virtuous, etc. In the Second Dhyana are the luminous, etc. In the First Dhyana are the Great Brahma, etc. Each of these lower (Dhyanas) also has three (abodes), as mentioned above. When the world is formed, if it was previously destroyed by fire, a deity from the Second Dhyana, upon death, is reborn in the empty immeasurable palace of Brahma. From there, it gradually expands, forming from Brahma's retinue and Brahma's assembly downwards to the hells, in descending order. If it was previously destroyed by water, it is necessary to know that beings are initially reborn from the Third Dhyana downwards, and so forth. The Desire Realm has six god realms and four great continents, Eight minor continents, and the two destinies of animals and hungry ghosts, Including the eight hot and eight cold hells.
