In the southwest direction [of this place], there is a circular area called "Abode of the Good Dharma Deities," spanning eight hundred Yojanas. In its center, there is a golden throne where Indra (Shakra) teaches the Dharma, and cushions laid out for the thirty-two close attendants. Additionally, there are the self-arising drum sounds of the four Dharma summary verses, inspired by diligence (heedfulness); ambrosia vases that protect from illness, old age, and untimely death; the great elephant Rab-brtan and the son of Sa-srungs (Earth Protector); along with hundreds of thousands of attendants endowed with the swiftness of horse-clouds, and other inconceivable phenomena. In the four cardinal directions, there are also the abodes of the secret Yakshas named Vajrapāṇi (Lag-na rdo-rje). Above this, like clouds in the sky, Reside the Avṛha, Tushita, Nirmāṇarati, and Paranirmitavaśavartin heavens. Above this abode of the three roots (realms), the gods, whose immeasurable palaces and other abodes arise from their respective karmic affinities, are arranged in successive layers from bottom to top. Their extraordinary wealth is like clouds relying on the sky. Firstly, among the desire realm heavens, there is "Avṛha" (Abhrapa), which is free from the conflicts of the Asuras. This heaven is also called "Twin Devas" because two deities are born simultaneously by spontaneous generation. Next is "Tushita," endowed with the joy of the Dharma of the victorious Maitreya. Then "Nirmāṇarati," who enjoy desired objects created by themselves at will. And "Paranirmitavaśavartin," who have power over the enjoyments created by others. These are the six desire realm heavens. The sixteen Form Realm abodes, such as the Brahma-pariṣad, Above all these is the lesser Akaniṣṭha heaven. Above that, the abode of Maheśvara (Īśvara) is explained. Above these (desire realms), the sixteen Form Realm abodes, such as the Brahma-pariṣad, are arranged in successive layers from bottom to top. Above all of these, including the lesser Akaniṣṭha abode, they are known as the seventeen abodes of the Form Realm. Among these (seventeen abodes), ascending in order from below are the First Dhyana heavens: "Brahma" (Tshangs pa), attained by abandoning evil unwholesome dharmas; "Brahma-pariṣad" (Tshangs ris), belonging to his retinue; and "Brahma-purohita" (Tshangs pa'i mdun na 'don), who sit before Brahma and recite verses. Born from great roots of virtue, whose lifespan, body size, etc., are greater than others, and who are the lords of the three-thousand great-thousand world systems, are the "Mahābrahma" (Tshangs chen). These are the three types of (First Dhyana) heavens. Regarding the Second Dhyana heaven: ...its own upper level...

Inferring, the 'Minor Light', where both the extent and brightness of light are small; the 'Immeasurable Light', whose extent of light cannot be measured by lower realms; and the 'Clear Light', where both the extent and brightness of light are great, illuminating all other places; these are the three. Regarding the Third Dhyana, the bliss of the mental realm is termed 'virtue' due to its extreme peacefulness. Within this, there is the 'Minor Virtue', which is smaller than the virtue of higher realms; the 'Immeasurable Virtue', a bliss that cannot be measured by lower realms; and the 'Extensive Virtue', where that bliss greatly expands and increases, or is superior to the virtue of those gods, unparalleled in the divine realms; these are the three. Regarding the Fourth Dhyana, there is the 'Cloudless' realm, like the earth covered by clouds but without attachment; the 'Born of Merit' realm, born from unmoving merit; and the 'Great Reward' realm, which is the supreme fruit among all ordinary beings connected to other realms; these are the three abodes for ordinary beings. Furthermore, among the higher Pure Abodes, there is the 'Not Great' (Avṛha), which is not greatly different in qualities from them; the 'Without Distress' (Atapā), having attained special samadhi, thus without the distress of regret or afflictions; the 'Excellent Appearance' (Sudṛśā), appearing exceedingly peaceful and supremely beautiful (folio 17b); the 'Excellent Vision' (Sudarśana), where seeing or viewing is perfectly pure and good; and the 'Akaniṣṭha' (Ogmin), where in relation to other realms, there are no qualities superior to this. This is the ultimate accumulation of subtle particles of form, therefore it is also called 'accumulated limit'. It is said that in one part of the Great Reward realm, there are beings without consciousness. These Fourth Dhyana realms do not have a common karmic affinity in one place; therefore, the gods individually have immeasurable palaces and undergo birth and death with distinctions. From the 'Not Great' (Avṛha) up to the 'Akaniṣṭha', these are renowned as pure abodes exclusively for Noble Ones (Aryas). The Akaniṣṭha is said to be the abode of the Sambhogakāya (Enjoyment Body) in sūtras such as the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra and some tantras, thus indicating a consistent intention in one aspect. In the *Sa-sde* (Treatise on Grounds/Abhidharma texts), it is also stated that above this, there is a realm called the abode of Maheśvara, where the Maheśvaras (masters) of the ten bhūmis are born. From higher to higher, they are twice as great and supreme. The detailed measurements and forms of these are found in Abhidharma and other texts. Generally, these divine abodes are considered to be twice as vast and superior in enjoyments and dominion from higher to higher realms. Called god
