Also, in Sanskrit, it is called 'Devakasa,' meaning that since the abode of these [beings] is in the higher realms, they are called 'dwellers of higher realms' or 'sky-dwellers.' Alternatively, 'Deva' [is so called] because they sport and delight, hence 'deity.' Second, the incidental [views of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas]: One triple-thousandfold world system is perceived by Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. They assert that these are formed from partless atoms. The structure of such a single great triple-thousandfold world system, as explained, is perceived and understood even by the pure wisdom of the noble Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. However, the nature of the arrangement of other immeasurable ocean-like buddha-fields is solely the sphere of experience for Buddhas and Bodhisattvas dwelling on the pure grounds. As it states: 'Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas, See two, three thousand, and countless [worlds].' Thus it is stated. These Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas assert that the coarse physical container world is formed from the aggregation of particulate matter, namely the partless subtle atoms of space—the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind—and the objects of senses: smell, taste, touch, and form, which are aggregates of eight constituent atoms. Moreover, unlike the views of non-Buddhists, they do not assert that partless atoms remain scattered after the destruction of previous kalpas. Instead, in this realm, it is asserted that the wind itself is the initial seed, capable of producing various coarse results through the collective karma of sentient beings yet to be born here, and more detailed explanations will follow below. Two, explaining sentient beings, has four parts: 1. Nature; 2. Mode of Genesis; 3. Happiness and Suffering; 4. Mode of Dissolution. First, The nature of beings is unobscured and indeterminate. Having thus explained the container world, the nature of the sentient beings who reside therein is that they are not obscured by karma and afflictions, and are not designated as either virtuous or non-virtuous. The unique explanations of Mahayanists, such as the Alaya-vijñana and clear light, will be elaborated below. Second, concerning [the mode of genesis], there are two parts: 1. Summary, 2. Elaboration. First, the summary: The four births and so on are asserted to be gradually established. They arise sequentially from higher realms, forming down to the hells. When beings first become deluded, by their own...
