It is said that medicine (healing arts) first emerged in the sacred land of Kashi (Varanasi). Thereafter, it gradually developed, and many sages appeared who mastered the ocean of medical Vedas, such as the son of Good Birth (Gzhung la skyes kyi bu), Sun (Nyima), Essence of Moon (Zlaba'i snying po), Shalihotra, Ribhya, Sthavara, and others, who authored numerous treatises. Furthermore, the great sage king Palden Godpa (Glorious Laughter) praised, and the lord of all Vedas, sage Harichandra, also known as the exalted Charaka, appeared and composed the medical treatise called 'Charaka Samhita'. Among his descendants were great physicians named Palden Nagpo (Glorious Black), Rolwas Geg (Playful One), Dongchen Dawa (Moon-faced), Rinchen Jungne (Source of Jewels), Jugpa (Entering Practice), all bearing names with 'Pal' (glorious/auspicious). Also, the son of Palden Nagpo was Tsangpa (Brahma), and his son (page 212 verso) Wangchug Chenpo (Great Lord), renowned as a great scholar under the sun on earth, composed various manifest expressions (Ngonjor Natsog Salwa). In addition, many other learned sages composed numerous medical treatises, among which it is said that eight are most famous, including the teachings compiled by Gyunshes (Continuity of Knowledge) from Brahma, the revisions by Legthos (Well-heard), and the 'Collection of Precious Items' (Gyehtus) compiled by Thothun Palphel (Exalted Glorious Increase), among many others. Second, [Regarding how the Teacher (Buddha) taught]: The Teacher (Buddha) sporadically taught in the Vinaya, Sutra, Tantra, etc. At that time, figures like the youth Jivaka appeared (as healers). Some believe the treatises were taught in the forest of medicines. Our Teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha, during the first turning of the Dharma wheel, in the third section of the Vinaya-lung (Discourse on Discipline) concerning medicine, briefly explained medicine and purgative treatments. Primarily, he instructed monks on four types of medicine: timely medicine, medicine to be taken within a session (one day), seven-day medicine, and lifelong medicine. These were, respectively, like pills (Lde gu) etc., drinks like fruit yogurt (Shing tog zho tsam gyi btung ba) etc., melted brown sugar and butter (Bura ram zhun mar) etc., and root medicines. Concurrently, a general narrative about the physician Jivaka also arose. Later, when the 'Sutra of Golden Light' was taught, during the dispensation of the past Buddha Ratnacūḍa (Jewel-Crested), the Buddha himself was born as Khyeru Chu Babs (Water-drawing Boy), the son of a merchant. At that time, he became proficient in the principles of medicine from his father, the great physician Ralpa Dzinpa (Hair-Holder).
