Many types originated from their respective lands. Since writing follows sound and language, each region gives rise to numerous slightly different sounds and script types, making it impossible to establish a definitive system for all. Externalists (non-Buddhists) believe that among the twenty-four creators they accept, the creator of writing is the ever-peaceful deity, Maheshvara (Great Lord). Furthermore, in India (Bharat), Indian script types and so forth arose in their respective regions. Many such instances occurred where older ones declined and newer ones flourished. When the Dharma (teachings) flourished in India, Lantsa (Ranjana), Vartula, Nagari scripts, etc., were mainly prevalent, and after the Dharma declined, only the scripts of the Mlecchas (barbarians) flourished. In China (Zhongguo), during the time of the Five Dhis (emperors) and so on, carved scripts and mechanical scripts (possibly early printing) appeared. Later, it is said that during the time when the great minister Li Si (Li Si) was with the army, he used a rabbit's tail as a brush and pine smoke for ink to create written scripts, and many such stories exist. Regarding the origin of scriptural texts (glegs-bam): During the period of the second chakra (of Indra's reign), Shakra (Indra) wrote on golden leaves with melted vaidūrya (lapis lazuli). Writing on the banner's victory ornament (dhvaja-agra-alamkāra) and attaching it to the top of the victory banner repelled the battles of the asuras (anti-gods). The Sutras (Buddha's teachings) were not allowed to be sold, but non-Buddhist treatises were allowed, as explained in the Vinaya (monastic discipline) scriptures, thus establishing their existence. At the time of the Dharma councils (Bka'-bsdu), the compilers wrote them in their respective languages in their own regions, and from this, they gradually developed. In Tibet (Bod), Thonmi (Thönmi Sambhoṭa) from the noble land (ʻPhags-yul, India) Learned sound and script, modeling the forms of letters. Adding and subtracting what was necessary for Tibet, He composed the Eight Treatises on Grammar, including Sum-tag. Yukhri Sum-pa (G.yu khri sum pa) and others further spread their development. Furthermore, as stated in the *Dri-med 'Od* (Stainless Light): 'In the land of Tibet (Bod), the three Yanas (vehicles) were written in the Tibetan language (Bod-kyi skad),' and so forth. When there was initially no proper script and grammar in the land of Tibet (Bod), the great minister of Dharma King Songtsen Gampo (Srong-btsan Sgam-po), Thonmi Sambhota (Thu-mi Sam-bho-ta), an emanation of Mañjuśrī ('Jam-dbyangs), was urged by the command of the Dharma King (Chos-rgyal), a Bodhisattva. And by the power of his own special Bodhisattva vow awakening at the right time, he went to the noble land (ʻPhags-yul, India) with sixteen companions to meet a Paṇḍita (scholar)... (text cut off).
