A statue was made from earth. In Bodhgaya, a small structure was built with an outer stupa shape and an inner gandhola-shaped palace. Inside, a statue of the Teacher, the size of a thirty-five-year-old, adorned with auspicious marks and signs, with emerald eyes, was erected using a mixture of sandalwood, goshri, and precious powders. Its tongue covered its face, its monastic robe did not touch its body by four fingers, its light spanned a fathom. The three modes of conduct (walking, standing, sitting) were not present in this (statue). Apart from eight distinct features such as blue hair and an indistinct urna hair, this Mahabodhi (statue) is renowned for resembling the actual Teacher, thus it appeared. Afterwards, various patrons successively erected many wondrous objects of veneration in Magadha (modern Bihar, India), such as Manjushri's Drum Sound and eight others. In Ashoka's time, eight stupas in eight places were built. Within Bodhgaya's inner circuit, built by Yaksha artisans. In Nagarjuna's time, many were repaired/made by Nagas. During the time of King Ashoka, stupas in the eight great places and within Bodhgaya's inner circuit, etc., were built by Yaksha artisans. In Nagarjuna's time, many were also repaired/made by Naga artisans. Such works made by Nagas and Yakshas, for many years after their construction, truly possessed the power to inspire wonder. Although later, due to the influence of time, such power might not be present, their unique craftsmanship was such that no one else could comprehend it. After that, for a long time, many different lineages of craftsmanship emerged, created with various intellectual skills. However, no tradition was established to follow just one (style). Resembling the craftsmanship of gods, Yakshas, and Nagas, The styles of Bimbisara, Phreng 'dzin, and Dhiman, Known as the Central, Old Western, and Eastern styles. Afterwards, successively, those resembling the craftsmanship of gods, Yakshas, and Nagas (were developed). During the time of King Sangs-rgyas-phyogs (Buddhapalita) (208 CE), one named Bimbisara appeared in Magadha (modern Bihar, India). During the time of King Ngang-tshul (Caritavardhana), one named Shri-dhari or Phreng 'dzin appeared in Maru (possibly Marwar region). During Devapala's time, one named Dhiman appeared in Varendra (region in Bengal). His son, named Vitpalo, resided in Vangala (Bengal). These individuals were extremely skilled in painting, relief, casting, and carving. Their lineage holders were successively called the Central style, the Old Western tradition, and the Eastern style. The gods of the East also...

Following the Eastern style, and the prevalent style of Bu's followers in Magadha, is identified as the Central painting style. Nepal's earlier and middle (styles) align with the old Western and Eastern. Kashmir has three traditions: Central, old Western, and its own style. In the land of Nepal, the earlier artistic tradition was also similar to the old Western style. The paintings and bronzes of the middle period (in Nepal) were mostly similar to the Eastern style, which was Nepal's own style, but later it became uncertain. Kashmir, too, in earlier times, followed the Central and old Western styles. Later, someone named Hasurāja established a new tradition for both painting and sculpture, and that style is now no longer referred to as the Kashmiri style. Wherever the Buddha's doctrine exists, deity sculptors are skilled; wherever barbarians hold sway, deity sculptors decline; and wherever non-Buddhist doctrines are prevalent, unskilled deity sculptors also become prevalent. In those regions, the traditions mentioned above are largely absent nowadays. In Pagan (Myanmar) and the southern regions, even later, the creation of statues was prevalent. The artistic traditions of those (regions) apparently never existed in Tibet before. It is said that in that region, there are very many followers of the three (traditions/names): Jaya (ཛ་ཡ།, जय, jaya, victory), Parajaya (པཱ་ར་ཛ་ཡ།, पराजय, parājaya, victory over others), and Vijaya (བི་ཛ་ཡ།, विजय, vijaya, complete victory). II. Second part: How it originated in Tibet. In Tibet, the statues of the Three Dharma Wheels (or Three Dharmacakras) are earlier. In the land of Tibet, it is said that during the time of the emanation King Songtsen Gampo, the main sacred objects of Tradruk Monastery (昌珠寺) were solely self-arisen, as well as the self-arisen Great Compassionate One (Avalokiteshvara) in Rasa (Lhasa). During Trisong Detsen's time, painted and sculpted images of the Three Dharma Wheels, primarily the Mahabodhi (Great Enlightenment) at Samye Monastery (桑耶寺), appeared early. Furthermore, the earliest painted image model, "Thubpa Chulonma (The Buddha who arose from water)," is said to have been spread by Taktsang Lotsawa, who, after smearing perfumed water on the Mahabodhi image at Vajrasana (Bodh Gaya, 金刚座), pressed a clean wet cloth upon it and lifted it. Through the blessing, the two hands directly appeared, and that was used as a model to disseminate the painting tradition. Although others hold to what was mentioned above, considering features such as its short neck and broad width, I (the author) feel that this latter (explanation, i.e., the water-arisen image as the model) seems more plausible. Therefore, although it cannot be compared with (standard) proportions and its appearance is slightly unattractive, it is nonetheless the authoritative source for all commonly accepted painting traditions. In the painting tradition of the Nepali style, there are two wise ones (or two wise physicians). Byi'u's three schools, Bkrashe... (incomplete)
