The painter was unable to depict (the Buddha). The Buddha then sat by the bathing pool, and his likeness, as it appeared in the water, was drawn on cloth. Above and below (the image), dependent origination in forward and reverse order, the five precepts of taking refuge, and their benefits were written by (the Buddha) and sent. Udayana consequently perceived the truth. This (image) is known as "Thubpa Chulonma" (The Buddha of Water Reflection). Again, when the Blessed One was teaching Dharma in Senkyar, Mingchen's wife sent the servant girl Rohita to fetch a necklace. On the way, she was struck by a pregnant cow and died. Due to her faith in the Buddha, she immediately took rebirth in the womb of the queen of Sinhala (Sri Lanka). When she was born, a rain of pearls fell, so she was named "Pearl Girl" or "Pearl Vine." (206b) From merchants in the central land (India), she heard about the Buddha, developed faith, and sent a letter. The Teacher (Buddha) emitted rays of light onto the surface of a cloth, which the painter then depicted. Upon seeing the verses of the Buddha's teaching sent as a reply, the girl perceived the truth. This (image) is known as "Thubpa Özerma" (The Buddha of Light Rays), and from this, the pure sense bases and the lineages of deities from the central land and the east originated. Second part: [Origin of Embossed Statues]. During the midday meal offering, before the seating rows, at the request of Anathapindika, many precious embossed statues were bestowed. And when (the Buddha) ascended to the divine realms, King Prasenajit erected a sandalwood statue, which is currently enshrined in China. The householder Anathapindika invited the Sangha for a midday meal. When the Teacher (Buddha) was not (personally) present in the foremost row, he observed that the seat was not glorious. Therefore, Anathapindika requested, "If the Teacher (Buddha) grants permission, please create a statue and let it reside here." The Buddha granted permission, and consequently, many statues made of precious jewels appeared. Furthermore, after the Blessed One ascended to the divine realms, King Prasenajit erected a sandalwood statue as an object of worship. Later, when the Teacher (Buddha) descended from the divine realms, that statue advanced sixty steps to greet him. The Blessed One then encouraged (the statue), saying, "Go forth to the land of China for the benefit of beings," whereupon it departed through the sky and remains enshrined in China to this day, known as the "Sandalwood Jowo." Many thangkas depicting its replicas are also found. These are the origins of embossed statues. Thereafter, Rahula, for the Naga's jewel, constructed the great snowy lake, and it resides in the outer ocean. After that, when the Teacher (Buddha) was about to pass into nirvana, in order to preserve the doctrine and subdue heretics, my body...

As commanded to build a substitute body, with numerous Naga jewels as material, and crafted by Rahula, the Sambhogakaya Vairocana was constructed, as vast as a great ocean, eighty Yojanas in width, and resided within the outer ocean. Indra, with countless jewels, eighty-two, The twenty-five (207n) substitute bodies, manifested by various magical powers. The latter in the heavens, the other two reside in Tibet. Truly blessed, identical to the Buddha himself. Indra, with five kinds of celestial and human jewels and five hundred and one bindings, that is, many jewels, began to construct the body of the Buddha. Vishvakarma attempted to measure the Buddha's little toe with a measuring line, but failed, and then arrived before Akshobhya Buddha, the Glorious Buddha of Joy, in the Abhirati world. The Buddha told him: “Let go of your attachment to the size of the body, and remember your own teacher.” He immediately returned before the Buddha. The Buddha's body size at eight and twelve years old was according to the teachings of the former mothers, and the twenty-five-year-old body size was consistent with the commonly perceived true body size, created by various miraculous manifestations. The Buddha blessed them by radiating and retracting light from his face. Afterwards, Indra invited the twenty-five-year-old body-sized statue to the celestial realm. The other two statues resided in the celestial realm, Oddiyana, the Naga realm, Bodh Gaya, and other places for many years. Later, during the time of King Devapala, the twelve-year-old body-sized statue was invited to China, and the eight-year-old body-sized statue was invited to Nepal. They gradually arrived in Tibet and are now enshrined in the Jokhang Temple (Trulnang) and Ramoche Temple (Ramo Che). Since these statues were personally blessed by the Buddha, their blessings are identical to the Buddha himself. After the Parinirvana, celestial craftsmen incarnated as humans, The statues of the three Brahmin brothers, and Magadha's Eight wonders, and so on, many were constructed. After the Buddha's Parinirvana, when there was a great lack of human artisans endowed with miraculous powers, many celestial craftsmen manifested as humans and assisted in constructing exceptional supports (statues). Among these, nearly eighty years after the Buddha's passing, the son of the noble Upagupta appeared in Magadha. The eldest of the three Brahmin brothers built a statue and a temple in Varanasi from precious stones. The middle brother built a temple in Rajagriha, and the eight great holy sites.
