In brief, within this Buddhist doctrine, among all the supports of the Three Jewels, first appeared the support of the mind Dharmakaya. When the Teacher was born in the Lumbini Grove, King Suddhodana and others constructed the lotus-piled stupa. Thereafter, secondly, the eight famous stupas such as the Bodhi Stupa, and others, were constructed. Furthermore, many supports of the Buddha, symbolized by hair and nail stupas, and stupas of Sravaka Arhats, such as Rupakaya Sarira (form-body essence), were successively built by the faithful, as it is explained. 2. The second part explains the origin of the Body Supports, which comprises three points: 1. The origin in the Noble Land (India), 2. The origin in Tibet, and 3. Incidental mention of scriptural sources. 1. The first point is divided into two parts: 1. The origin of painted images, and 2. The origin of sculpted images. 1. Firstly, In the era of one hundred thousand years of life, King Jigthul, Having been taught by Brahma and Vishvakarman, then began. When the Lord of Sages passed away, it actually gave rise to a powerful illusion (as if he were still present). Of the two, painted and sculpted, painting appeared earlier. According to the 'Brahma's Standard of Measurement,' a treatise on the characteristics of painting compiled by the son of the sage Atreya, in the initial kalpa, when human lifespans began to decrease from one hundred thousand years, there appeared a human ruler named Jigthul. He ruled this land righteously, causing lifespans to increase to one hundred thousand years, and people became exceedingly happy. The king practiced asceticism and attained the eight qualities of Isvara. Brahma then bestowed upon him the supreme ability to know all treatises, and the supreme blessing that divine armies and weapons could not enter the human realm. At that time, a precious son of a Brahmin suddenly died. The Brahmin said to the king, 'You have not governed the kingdom righteously, so untimely death has come upon the subjects, and my son has died. If you do not restore my son, I will kill myself here.' Upon hearing this, the king took the Brahmin and went before Yama, the king of the dead, who shone with splendor like the sun. After prostrating, he requested that the Brahmin's son be returned. Yama replied, 'This is not my fault; it is merely their own karma.' The king said, 'Then give him to me!' Yama repeatedly said, 'It is not permissible.' Finally, they arrayed their forces and cast a shower of weapons at each other. The king, with a shower of divine weapons, defeated all of Yama's retinues, whereupon Yama also raised his club...

At that time, the king, holding a Brahma-headed staff, caused fear throughout the world. Then, the deity Brahma appeared and said, “This is merely the result of individual karma; Yama (Gshin rje) is not at fault. However, as if commanded to ‘draw the Brahmin’s son,’ the king drew it. Brahma then brought him back to life and entrusted him to the Brahmin. Since a preta (Yi dvags) is called ‘the naked one’ (Gcer bu), and it was good to subdue that one, the king was called ‘subduer of the naked one’ (Gcer thul). And because he was the first to draw an image, he was named ‘the first drawer.’ After Brahma’s exhortation, the king also paid homage and made offerings to Yama (Gshin rje), and everyone became joyful. Later, the king went to Brahma’s realm and inquired about the method of painting, (to which Brahma replied): The king of mountains is Mount Meru. Among those born from eggs, The chief is Garuda (Nam mkha' lding). The chief of humans is the earth-lord (Sa bdag), Likewise, painting is the chief of arts. And so on. Similarly, O King, all arts, Are truly based on the work of painting. And so on. After such praise, just as Vishvakarman (Bi shwa kar ma) had prophesied in his teachings, (painting) mainly adopted the standards of a Universal Monarch ('khor los sgyur ba'i tshad), explaining the faults of not conforming to standards and the benefits of conforming to standards (206v), and so forth. If the body lacks beauty, What good are measurements alone? Thus, the necessity of beauty was also taught. From then on, human artisans endowed with skill and ingenuity constantly created wondrous crafts. Even before the Powerful Sage (Thub dbang gshegs) passed into nirvana, images painted could truly produce miraculous effects, as clearly stated in the Vinaya scripture ('Dul ba lung). For about a hundred years after the Buddha’s nirvana, such occurrences were also very numerous. Regarding Udrāyana (U dra ya na)'s Pearl Necklace (Mu tig 'khri shing), The painted image sent, Chu lon 'od zer ma (Water Mirror Light Radiating), Is renowned as the earliest image in this teaching. The painted images known as Chu lon ma (Water Mirror) and 'Od zer ma (Light Radiating), sent to Udrāyana (U dra ya na) and the one possessing the Pearl Necklace (Mu tig 'khri shing can), are famed as the earliest among all Buddha images in this teaching. At that time, King Bimbisara (Gzugs can snying po) of Magadha (Ma ga dhA) and King Udrāyana (U dra ya na) of Śrāvasti (Sgra sgrog) became unseen friends and exchanged gifts. When Śrāvasti (Sgra sgrog) sent an invaluable jewel armor as a return gift, King Bimbisara (Gzugs can snying po) began to paint the image of the Buddha on cloth as a return gift, but the Buddha's radiance could not be endured
