And so on, there appear to be many commentaries composed by external and internal panditas. Manjushri Grammar (Vyakaranam) was translated by Shalu Lotsawa. The grammar text renowned as composed by Jampal Dragpa (Manjushri Kirti), and only the commentary on the second part of the fifth chapter, though translated by Shalu Lotsawa Choskyong Zangpo, the tradition of teaching and learning did not arise. Indian and Tibetan grammar commentaries, good and bad, are endless. Regarding those four great grammar treatises translated into Tibetan, there arose (201b) difficult commentaries, explanatory commentaries, extensive commentaries, and as subsidiary parts, Unadi, Ting-sup, word compounding, gender summation, verb root commentaries, etc., good treatises that became authoritative, as well as endless bad ones made by those with obscured intellects and little learning. J.2 Secondly, in explaining the origin of Valid Cognition (Pramana Vidya), there are two parts: N.1 Externalists; N.2 Internalists. N.1 The first is: Externalist dialectics, though earlier, are indeed flawed. Numerous dialectical treatises composed by externalist teachers like the Rishi Lingkyes (Akshapada Gautama), and treatises teaching the eight categories of dialectical words and meanings by the Brahmin Kangmig (Gautama) arose. Even though these appeared earlier than Buddhist texts, they seemed to be treatises primarily engaged in debate and were indeed flawed, thus they are not adopted here. Therefore, even what is commonly known as valid cognition is only considered in terms of mere debate; since the actual assertions are not equivalent, there is a great difference. N.2 The second [Internalists] has three parts: T.1 How it arose in the Noble Land (India); T.2 How it arose in Tibet; T.3 And as a corollary, which philosophical tenets it corresponds to. T.1 The first is: Buddhist valid cognition texts were initially established through debate. From the scriptures of the Victor (Buddha), direct valid cognition is clearly taught, and inferential valid cognition is also not refuted, and implicitly known through reasoning. From the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: Dependence on reality and action, The four reasonings that establish validity. Thus, the four classifications of reasoning are taught. It is said that in ancient times, during the twenty thousand year lifespan, it also appeared in the teachings of Buddha Kashyapa. In the teachings of this Teacher (Shakyamuni Buddha), the initial Buddhist valid cognition texts were established through debate. Some of their authors...

Some say this was composed by Acarya Vasubandhu. However, in the auto-commentary of the *Pramanasamuccaya*, extensive refutations were made, clarifying that it was not composed by the younger Vasubandhu. Earlier Tibetans assert that it was composed by a venerable person named Vasubandhu, such as Bhikshu Vigyata. Dignaga composed the two (sections) on Perception and Inference, The six-chapter sutra on Exclusion of Others, Example, and Contradiction, Which compiles all of them. The great master Dignaga, observing that his hundred and eight scattered treatises on epistemology, such as *Examination of the Object* and *Examination of Exclusion*, were not fully complete, later compiled them into one, composing the *Pramanasamuccaya*, a six-chapter sutra that elucidates the two (types of valid cognition)—Perception and Inference—along with Exclusion of Others, Example, and Contradiction. This treatise was explained by Acarya Ishvarasena and others. As its interpretive commentary, Dharmakirti composed the extensive, medium, and condensed root texts, Along with four branches, establishing the tradition of the Seven Treatises. As an interpretive commentary on that treatise, the Sun of Speakers, Dharmakirti, composed three root treatises, like the body: the extensive *Pramāṇavārttika*, the medium *Pramāṇaviniścaya*, and the condensed *Nyāyabindu*. And four branch treatises, like limbs: *Sambandhaparīkṣā* (Examination of Relation), *Hetubindu* (Drop of Reason), *Vādanyāya* (Reasoning in Debate), and *Saṃtānāntarasiddhi* (Proof of Other Continua). Thus establishing the great tradition known as the Seven Treatises on Valid Cognition. Devasarman, Shakyabuddhi, Vinītadeva, Prajñākaragupta and others explained (them), Jñānakirti, Yamāri, and Subhagupta followed the tradition. When the chief disciple Devendrabuddhi was instructed to write a commentary on the *Pramāṇaviniścaya*, he composed a commentary, continuing from the first chapter of the auto-commentary. Regarding this, old histories state that Devendrabuddhi's first two attempts were destroyed by fire and water, and only the third attempt was said to contain merely the actual teaching. The combination of the auto-commentary and these two (commentaries by Devendrabuddhi) is known as the "Twelve Thousand (Stanza) Pramana". His disciple Shakyabuddhi composed a commentary on the "Twelve Thousand (Stanza) Pramana". Acarya Vinītadeva is renowned for having composed commentaries on all Seven Treatises. The abbot Prajñākaragupta composed an extensive commentary on the *Pramāṇavārttika*, continuing from the three chapters on the establishment of valid cognition of the "Three and a Half Thousand (Stanza) Pramana", whose meaning...
