Through Milarepa's skillful means, demonstrating the uncommon Mahamudra of Vajrayana, he turned the Wheel of Dharma with great miraculous powers, thereby guiding five hundred fortunate beings akin to Arhats and countless other trainees to maturation and liberation. In brief, this great being (Milarepa) was akin to a Buddha who came into the world; all who saw, heard, remembered, or touched him, even until now, were capable of having their minds matured and liberated. His liberation stories are inconceivable. Among his principal disciples, Barompa Dharma Wangchuk ('Ba' Rom Pa Dar Ma Dbang Phyug) established the Barom Kagyu; Phagdru Dorje Gyalpo (Phag Gru Rdo Rje Rgyal Po) established the Phagdru Kagyu; Khampa Usu (Khams Pa Dbu Se), also known as Lord Dus Sum Khyenpa (Rje Dus Gsum Mkhyen Pa), established the Kamtsang Kagyu; and from Shang Tsalpa Tsondru Drakpa (Zhang Tshal Pa Brtson 'Grus Grags Pa), a disciple of Dbon Gom Tsultrim Nyingpo (Dbon Sgom Tshul Khrims Snying Po), came the Tsalpa Kagyu. These are renowned as the "Four Great" (Kagyu branches). Furthermore, at Gompo's original monastic seat, there were the three Dagpo uncle and nephews, Dagpo Dulzin (Dags Po 'Dul 'Dzin), and subsequently great scholar-adepts such as Tashi Namgyal (Bkras Shis Rnam Rgyal) appeared ceaselessly, thus forming the Dagpo Kagyu. These constitute the five (major branches). Phagdru's disciples were Drikung ('Bri Gung), Taglung (Stag Lung), Trophu (Khro Phu), and Lingras (Gling Ras), forming two pairs. Smar (Smar), Yel (Yel), Ya (G.ya'), and Shug (Shug), these four pairs total eight (minor Kagyu branches). Lingras' spiritual son, the Drukpa ('Brug Pa) lineage, spread to the upper, lower, and middle regions. The glorious Phagmo Drupa (Dpal Ldan Phag Mo Gru Pa) was the Buddha 'Destroyer of the World' or Shakyamuni Buddha himself, manifesting in the form of a virtuous friend. Therefore, his liberation stories and enlightened activities are immeasurable. However, it is widely known (p. 186, verso) that from among his five hundred umbrella-holding principal disciples, the lineages known as the "Eight Minor Kagyu" arose: from Kyobpa Jigten Sumgon (‘Jig Rten Gsum Gyi Mgon Po) came the Drikung Kagyu; from Thangpa Tashi Palwa (Thang Pa Bkra Shis Dpal Ba) came the Taglung Kagyu; from Drogon Gyaltsa Khu Dbon ('Gro Mgon Rgyal Tsha Khu Dbon) came the Trophu Kagyu; from Lingre Pema Dorje (Gling Ras Pad Ma Rdo Rje) came the Lingre Kagyu; from Chojey Smarpa Drubtob (Chos Rje Smar Pa Grub Thob) came the Martsang Kagyu; from Yelpa Yeshe Tsepa (Yel Pa Ye Shes Brtshegs Pa) came the Yelpa Kagyu; from Zarawa Yeshe Sengge (Za Ra Ba Ye Shes Seng Ge) came the Yazang Kagyu; and from Nyi Phu Gyer Gom Chenpo (Snyi Phu Gyal Sgom Chen Po) came the Shugseb Kagyu. These eight, known as "four pairs and eight branches," thus emerged. From each of these, a great profusion of Dharma lineages, monastic seats, and immeasurable activities of accomplished scholars and masters blossomed. In particular, the students of Lingre's heart-son, Drogon Tsangpa Gyare (Gtsang Pa Rgya Ras), spread over a distance equivalent to eighteen days' flight for a vulture.

Thence, mainly Götsangpa Gönpo Dorje, renowned as the 'Upper Druk' (Stöd Druk), like a star in the sky. His lineage of disciples included Gyalwa Yangönpa, and his further disciples included Lhatöd Sherab Gönpo and Barawa Gyaltsen Zangpo, among others. Lorapa Dharma Wangchuk represented the 'Lower Druk' (Smad Druk), firm as the earth. The nine 'Lion' holders of the monastic seat were known as the 'Middle Druk' (Bar Druk), and many more besides. Furthermore, direct disciples of the glorious Phagmodrupa, such as Sherab Tharthug Parphupa, Menyak Gomring, the accomplished Nyare Wo, Jor Chökuwa, and countless others, arose to widely uphold the Dharma activities. 4. [Specifically expounding on the Karma Kamtsang Kagyu]: In the time of the Sixth Lion (Buddha), (understanding) the root lineage. From the three of Zurmang, Nato, and Gong, the latter (schools of) Kagyu and Nyingma lineages spread predominantly throughout Do-smad (Amdo). The yet-to-be-manifested Buddha, the Sixth Lion's Roar Bodhisattva (186b), manifested in the form of the glorious Dusum Khyenpa (Knower of the Three Times). Also, the great siddha Karma Pakshi, the omniscient Rangjung Dorje, and others—these 'human lions' renowned in Jambudvipa (India/Tibet) are successive rebirths of a second Buddha, having appeared fourteen times up to now. The biographies, activities, and numbers of disciples for each incarnation are immeasurable. Primarily, there are the successive rebirths of the realized Drakpa Sengge, who was the actual Amitabha Buddha, namely the ten Red Hat (Gyalwa Garwang Chug) crown holders. The successive rebirths of Goshri Paljor Döndrub, who was an emanation of the Five Lords of Secrets (Vajrapani), the successive Gyaltsab Rinpoches. The emanations of Drogön Raspa Chenpo, who appeared as the thirteen successive Situ Rinpoches, including Gyaltsab Jamyang Gönpo. The incarnations of the Tertön Rinchen Lingpa, who were the nine successive Pawo Rinpoches. The incarnations of Trechen Chökyi Gyatso, who were the successive Treho Rinpoches, all of whom sustained, upheld, and propagated the root of the Kamtsang Kagyu. Furthermore, the great siddha Tilopa sealed the thirteen lineages with a single Vajra Seal, prophesying that upon the completion of the thirteen, he himself would enjoy them like a lord of wealth. As prophesied, Mase Togden Lodrö Rinchen, the heart-son of the Fifth Tathagata (Karmapa), received the oral transmission of the Chakrasamvara Dakini. His disciples included the eight realized ones (Togden Ya Gyad), the three rainbow-body practitioners (Jamo Mi Sum), and others, all of whom were his emanations.
