revered. It is said: He met with many Siddha Lamas, with the venerable Naropa as the principal figure. In general, he requested the oral instructions of the Four Classes of Tantras. Thus it is stated: Especially, on a later occasion of seeking instruction, although Naropa had already passed into the Dakini realm, through fervent prayer, he appeared manifest (184b) in the Pushpahari Monastery in the north. He stayed for six months and completely bestowed the whispered lineage teachings of Chakrasamvara Father-Mother. Furthermore, he also relied upon the victorious Maitripa, who was held by the glorious Shavari; in the west, the scholar Yeshe Nyingpo (Jñanagarbha) of Lakshmitra; in the south, on the island of the Poison Lake, the Siddha Shantibhadra (Shiwa Zangpo); and many scholar-adepts such as the Dakini adorned with bone ornaments, from whom he heard boundless Sutras and Tantras. Especially, Naropa and Maitripa, having empowered the Great Lord Translator (Marpa Lotsawa) as the regent to tame the northern Land of Snows (Tibet), there came to be two great traditions: the lineage of explanation and the lineage of accomplishment. 2. The second [explanation of the individual types of lineages] has four parts: (1) The Four Great Pillars, (2) The Rechung Kagyu, (3) The Dagpo Kagyu, (4) And among these, specifically the explanation of the Karma Kamtsang Kagyu. (1) The first is: The transmission came to the Four Great Pillars, especially to Jetsun Mila, Two holders of the whispered lineage, like the sun and moon. Based on the inconceivable secret arrangement of the venerable Lhodrakpa (Marpa Lotsawa), to tame the boundless sentient beings in the Land of Snows (Tibet), many holders of instructions appeared, such as his four Heart Sons and ten Great Spiritual Friends. The principal among these, known as the Four Great Pillars, received the lineage of explanation and the lineage of accomplishment. Among these, Ngoktön Chödor of Ngok, Tshurtön Wangnge of Dol, and Metön Tshönpo of Tsangrong principally received the lineage of explanation. Jetsun Milarepa Zhepa Dorje received the lineage of accomplishment. Ngoktön passed into the Dakini realm without abandoning his physical body, and in the Ngok Seven Lineage, many endowed with wisdom, compassion, and power, who were masters of the vajra and bell, appeared. Among their disciples, most of the renowned figures in the Land of Snows (Tibet) gathered, and thus their activities became immensely widespread. Especially, the sole ornament of the ears of the Land of Snows (Tibet), Jetsun Milarepa, was no different from the great Siddhas of India, having attained the united state in a single lifetime.

Having attained the ultimate spiritual height (185a) and subdued immeasurable human and non-human beings, among his renowned disciples were the three supreme ones who disciplined beings, three male and four female Dakinis who journeyed to the sky-realm, and the eight great Repas, etc. Among them, the two principal holders of the whispered lineage, like the sun and moon, were especially eminent. T2. Second [Rechung Kagyu]: Rechungpa, the heart-son of the accomplished king Teepu, His profound instructions nourished all the schools of the Land of Snow. Among them, the heart-son like the moon, Machig Drubpai Gyalmo and Teepupa, the stainless spiritual friend, adopted Rechung, this supreme heart-son, and bestowed upon him the essence of the heart-treasury of instructions, enabling him to invite the later cycles of the Bodyless Dakini teachings. Rechung Dorje Drakpa (Rechungpa) departed for Changlochen without abandoning his physical body. Later, he also embraced many fortunate ones, such as the glorious Drukpa (Drukpa Kagyu). Among the twelve heart-sons who directly received instructions, the treasury of the whispered lineage was primarily entrusted to Gyalwa Khyungtsangpa. He passed it on to Machig Angjo, and so on, in a successive lineage, until Drogon Tsangpa Gyare (Drogon Tsangpa Gyarepa) widely established the Kagyu tradition. Lama Zangri Repa received the profound dharma of Jigten Wangchuk Gyalwa Gyatso (Lord of the World, Victorious Ocean) and so forth. He then passed it to Drogon Rinchen, and it also descended to the Karma Kagyu, thus the accomplished master Karma Pakshi also primarily attained realization through this very dharma. Among the eighteen volumes of Sham-bhu-can teachings, the Tsepakme Drodon Gyen Sham-bhu-can (Sham-bhu-can of Amitayus for the Benefit of Beings) is representative, permeating all traditions including Sakya, Kadampa, and Gelug (Sa-kar-ge-sum), illustrating that the profound teachings of this supreme being have become the sustenance for all schools in the Land of Snow. T3. Third [Dagpo Kagyu]: The son, the predicted monk healer by the Victorious One, Barom, Pakdru, Karma, and Tsalpa (185b) are the four great branches, Together with the root lineage, there are five in total. Milarepa's heart-son, the Victorious Shakyamuni (Gyalwa Thubpai Wangpo), like the sun, clearly predicted in texts such as the Tingdzin Gyalpo (King of Samadhi Sutra) and Nyingje Pema Karpo (White Lotus of Compassion Sutra), the monk healer, the incomparable Dagpo Lhajé (Gampopa), taught the common disciples the Kadampa Lamrim and Sutra-style Samadhi, adorned with the name "Mahamudra." For the uncommon disciples, the Lama...
