In addition, Secondly, from the perspective of the second part, it is comprised of three elements: the expressible (that which is to be expressed), the expression (that which expresses), and their interconnectedness. Firstly, as stated in the Great Outline of Gö Lotsawa: “The individual (gang zag) who serves as the support for entering the tantra purifies this ordinary appearance, which is the natural Dharma of the object to be purified (byang gzhi). In order to abandon the seeds of the three conceptual thoughts (rtog pa gsum) within their own mind-stream, they meditate upon the Great Vajradhara as the sixth object of focus. By engaging in the two paths of maturation and liberation, they attain temporary and ultimate results. This is the subject matter of the Guhyasamaja (Sangwa Düpa).” According to this, there are six meanings of the expressible (brjod bya): the natural Dharma of the object to be purified (byang gzhi) that is known by the individual who is the support for entering the tantra and is to be transformed; the incompatible defilements of the path (mi mthun pa lam gyi dri ma) to be abandoned; the object of focus; the method of practice; and the perfected results of the practice. Firstly, regarding individuals (gang zag), there are two: the individual holding the view of self (bdag tu lta ba), belonging to non-Buddhist schools (mu stegs pa), who is to be abandoned; and the individual proclaiming selflessness (bdag med smra ba), belonging to Buddhist schools (nang pa), who is to be adopted. Regarding the latter (Buddhist individuals), there are two Hinayana (Hearers and Solitary Realizers), and Mahayana (those without attachment and those with attachment). Although the former three (Hinayana Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Mahayana without attachment) are not actual vessels for this (tantra), because all Dharma gates are contained within this tantra, they are included verbally in the preceding section. Regarding those with attachment, there are also two types: afflictive attachment and counteracting attachment. From the four (stages of desire): gazing, smiling, embracing, and union, the latter (union) is taken for the former (afflictive attachment). For counteracting attachment, there are four types of attachment, arising respectively from reverence, compassion, faith, and wisdom, towards the Guru, sentient beings, deities, and Dharmata. Among these, there are two types: those of dull faculties who delight in wisdom, and those of sharp faculties who delight in means. It is taught that only the latter (those of sharp faculties who delight in means) are fitting vessels for this tantra. Furthermore, it encompasses the nature of the individual, the classification by time and extensive/condensed, the characteristics of the three suitable vessels (general, specific, and particular), and the reasons for verbal designation. Secondly, there are two types of objects to be purified (byang gzhi): birth as relative truth, and death as ultimate truth. The former (birth as relative truth) includes the two victorious excellent ones (royal ones) as support and supported. The latter (death as ultimate truth) applies the objects to be purified (byang gzhi) to each of the five stages (rim pa lnga). Thirdly, there are three types of defilements of the path: the strong defilement, which is the ordinary conceptual thought (rtog pa rang ga ma) of common things; the subtle defilement, which is the apprehended and apprehending.

Conceptualization of action, and extremely subtle conceptualization of the intrinsic nature of phenomena. Each of these is further divided into two: the gross defilements to be abandoned by weaker antidotes, and the subtle defilements to be abandoned by stronger antidotes. (156b) Fourth, the object of focus is the Great Vajradhara, the non-learning (or fully accomplished being's) indivisible union, embodying the Three Kayas, Three Times, Three Yanas, Three Mandalas, and Three Truths, and possessing the seven branches. Fifth, there are two methods of practice: the ripening path, which makes an unripe continuum ripe and a suitable vessel for accomplishing the three kinds of siddhis; and the path of liberation, which liberates a continuum not yet freed from the three conceptualizations. The first of these has three: preliminary approach (or preliminary retreat), the master's engagement, and the disciple's entry. The first, in turn, has three modes: the best, obtaining authorization from the deity; the mediocre, finding signs; and the lowest, completing the count of the approach mantra. The second has five: the ground, preparations, and the three rituals of drawing and coloring lines (mandala construction); blessing the mandala, practicing and making offerings; and oneself entering. The third has five: entering the mandala to become equal in fortune with the deity; showing the mandala to recognize the deity; conferring empowerment to be authorized or obtain permission to meditate on both generation and completion stages; transmitting mantras and mudras to attain the two kinds of siddhis in this very life; and teaching samaya and vows so as not to deviate from the Mahayana path. These, in turn, are subsumed by many internal divisions. Second, the methods of practice for liberation have two: post-meditation conduct, and equipoise meditation. Conduct has two: the inferior conduct of the Hinayana, and the supreme conduct of the Mahayana. The latter has two: the vast conduct of paramitas (perfections) free from attachment, and the profound conduct of tantra with attachment. Tantric conduct, generally explained according to the four classes of tantra. Here, particularly presenting the latter, the great yoga conduct, there are two: the Protector All-Pervading conduct, and the Tantric conduct. These are sequentially called the All-Victorious over Directions (Phyogs las rnam rgyal) and (157a) the conduct of the Youthful King or Glorious Regent. The latter has two: the conduct of desirous entry and reliance on disciples in common, and the conduct of wisdom asceticism. Each of these
