Many traditions emerged, such as the lineage passed down through Lotsawa, and from Vibhuti Chandra to Yakde Zema Rawa. Later, however, the continuity almost faded, becoming extremely tenuous. The hundreds of streams of these lineages, where the karmic imprints of Yoga Tantra were particularly awakened, ultimately converged into the great ocean of scholars, Buton Rinchen Drub. He authored a great commentary elucidating the concise meaning of Yoga Tantra, as well as many other texts such as mandala rituals, thereby reviving the teachings of Yoga Tantra from their foundation. Currently, the explanatory tradition no longer exists. (153b) Only the thirteen major and minor empowerments of Śrī Paramādi, Cūḍāmaṇi Kula-saṅgraha, Vajradhātu, etc., the scriptural transmissions of the tantras, and the empowerments of the twelve mandala practices of the congruent or extended tantras remain. What is known here as the Upper Yoga tradition and Lower Yoga tradition refers to the Great Translator's explanations in the earlier part of his life, made according to Shakyamitra, and practices according to Kunsnying's tradition. Although these arose in the earlier part of his life, they spread in the lower regions, thus called the Lower Yoga tradition. Its founders were King Chölo of Nyangtö (Gyantse), Sumtön of Rinpung (Shigatse), and Pangga Dangchung of Bodong (Shigatse). As for the Upper Yoga tradition, it refers to the Great Translator's later explanations and practices, both made according to Kunsnying's tradition. Although these occurred in the later part of his life, they spread in the upper regions, thus called by this name. This oral lineage, transmitted from Marpa Lotsawa to the Great Sakyapa Lamas and others, was maintained by the great revered Jetsun Drakpa Gyaltsen. Fearing that future disciples, being of dull intellect and forgetful, would be unable to uphold the oral lineage and it would thus decline, he composed the 'Three Cycles for the Benefit of Others' and other works, from which it gradually spread. As a result, the practice of the Sarvavid (Kunrig) purification tantra has spread and flourished among all schools of thought until now. 3. The third, [Anuttarayoga Tantra], has two parts: 1. Father Tantra, and 2. Mother Tantra. 1. The first (Father Tantra) has three: 1. Desire; 2. Hatred; and 3. Tantras of the Ignorance family. 1. As for the first (Desire family), the Guhyasamāja tradition is known for its twenty-four sub-traditions. In the Anuttara Father Tantra, Guhyasamāja, in India, (the lineage includes) Mahāpadmavajra, Niravayavajra (Vajra Without Limbs), Nāgārjuna, Līlāvajra (Playful Vajra), Vajrahasa (Vajra Laughter), and M...

From among those said to have established around twenty-four traditions, such as Nagsum Wangpo, Yang Nyan Kyongwa, Sangye Yeshe, Shantipa, and Kundga Nyingpo, the latter was expounded by scholars from the noble land (India), but what was certainly an Anuttarayoga Tantra was expounded as a Yoga Tantra, which was considered inappropriate. (154a) Among the approximately six Kagyü (Oral Transmission) traditions that arose in Tibet, The main ones are the two lineages of Arya (Nagarjuna) and Jnanapada. From those traditions, in this land of Tibet, six arose: the Arya (Nagarjuna) tradition, the Jnanapada tradition, the Shantipa tradition, the Vajrahasya tradition, the Padma Vajra tradition, and the Kunsnying (Kundga Nyingpo) tradition. During the early dissemination period, a person named Che Tashi translated (it), and from the eighteen great Tantra sections, the Mind Tantra known as Guhyasamaja (Secret Assembly) is renowned. Explanatory commentaries also appeared, exemplified by the Vajrahasya tradition. However, the empowerments, explanations, and pith instructions of the latter ones did not flourish for long. Primarily, the Arya (Nagarjuna) cycle, meaning Nagarjuna's tradition, and the tradition of Buddha Jnanapada, these two lineages, came with complete empowerments, explanations, and pith instructions, and remain until now. The former (Nagarjuna tradition) has the Mar (Marpa), Gos (Gos Lotsawa), Jowo, Chak, and Panchen lineages. The latter (Jnanapada tradition) has the Rin Zang (Rinchen Zangpo), Nyan, Ra, and Nyos lineages. Among these, the former Arya (Nagarjuna) tradition, at the beginning of the later dissemination, the great translator Rinchen Zangpo translated the Guhyasamaja Tantra itself, and many major and minor texts, such as its commentary *Drön Sal* (Clear Lamp). He also heard and fully comprehended the empowerments and explanations of those. Furthermore, later many translators listened in the noble land (India) and performed various translations and explanations, but primarily the two traditions of Mar (Marpa) and Gos (Gos Lotsawa) are widely renowned. Marpa Lotsawa Chökyi Lodrö relied on masters such as Naropa and Jnanagarbha and requested the teachings concerning Guhyasamaja. When teaching to disciples in Tibet, he fully bestowed the complete Guhyasamaja cycle, especially to Tsurton Wangge, who was the most excellent among the four great Kachen (scholarly) disciples. He then bestowed it upon Khampa Ronyam Dorje. When Ronyam Dorje went to India to listen to the Guhyasamaja (teachings), on the way he met two Indians who had come to Marpa to listen to the Guhyasamaja (teachings), and they returned together. Since Marpa had already passed away, (Ronyam Dorje) listened to the Guhyasamaja from Tsurton, etc., and thus it is renowned as the Mar (Marpa) tradition, transmitted closely.
