Concomitant: Pleasure and attachment, (145b) and so on. Establishment: "Not Ishvara, etc., because of sequence, etc.," and so on. 3. The third [origin of the explanation tradition of Prajñāpāramitā] is: The hidden meaning of Prajñāpāramitā, the Abhisamayālaṅkāra, was excellently expounded by the Victor's Representative (Maitreya), and made manifest by Asaṅga and his brother (Vasubandhu). From the two traditions of explanation that emerged concerning the Middle Turning of the Wheel of Dharma, the Prajñāpāramitā, the stages of the hidden meaning of clear realization are precisely this treatise known as the *Abhisamayālaṅkāra* (Ornament of Clear Realization), which was excellently expounded by the Victor's Representative, Maitreya. Having considered that this treatise and the *Twenty Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra* (*Pañcaviṁśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā*) have the same meaning, the Noble Asaṅga wrote a commentary on it, the *Viniścaya*. His brother Vasubandhu, by expounding the *Three Mother Sūtras* (referring to various Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras) such as the *Gnöd 'Joms* (Destroyer of Harm) according to the Vijñānavāda (Consciousness-Only) system, initially made them manifest. The two masters, Arya (Vimuktisena) and (Haribhadra) Siṃhabhadra, expounded according to the self-empty (rang stong) tradition, Because of their excellent explanation tradition, their activities were exceptionally outstanding. In particular, Arya Vimuktisena, a disciple of Vasubandhu, renowned for being more skilled in Prajñāpāramitā than Vasubandhu himself, composed a commentary on the *Ornament* (Abhisamayālaṅkāra) and the *Twenty Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra*, known as the *Twenty Thousand Verse Illumination* (*Pañcaviṁśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā-āloka*), in accordance with the Mādhyamaka system that asserts the absence of intrinsic nature. From then on, he established the tradition of combining the sūtra and the *Ornament*. Following that, masters such as Vimuktisena and Vimalamitra also composed various commentaries correlating with the extensive and middle-length Prajñāpāramitā sūtras. In particular, the master Haribhadra thoroughly comprehended all the traditions of the Prajñāpāramitā system. Through the power of blessings bestowed by the Venerable Maitreya, he composed the *Summary of the Eight Chapters* (*Aṣṭādhyāya-saṃgraha-artha*) correlating with the Middle Prajñāpāramitā, the *Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā* (*Aṣṭasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā-vṛtti*) correlating with the *Eight Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā*, the *Easy-to-Understand Commentary on the Collected Verses* (*Saṃcayagāthā-pañjikā-suviniścayārtha*) correlating with the *Collected Verses*, and the *Clear Meaning Commentary* (*Arthaviniścaya-ṭīkā*) correlating with all three Mother Prajñāpāramitā sūtras, and so on. In this way, these expositions, elucidated according to the self-empty (rang stong) tradition, possessed an exceedingly excellent explanation tradition. Consequently, all subsequent teachers of Prajñāpāramitā followed in his footsteps, making their activities exceptionally outstanding. (146a) Here in Tibet, Lang (clan) and...

Through the kindness of (the great translator) Vairocana, the explanations and practices of the Prajñāpāramitā extensively flourished. It is renowned that in this land of Tibet, all the teachings concerning the Middle Turning of the Wheel of Dharma, the Prajñāpāramitā, arrived from the noble land (India). During the early propagation of the Dharma, Rlangs Khampa Gocha traveled to the noble land (India), memorized the *Prajñāpāramitā in One Hundred Thousand Verses* (Abhisamayālaṅkāra), and skillfully translated it into Tibet. King Trisong Detsen, with great reverence for the Mahayana Dharma, mixed his own vermillion blood with white goat's milk and wrote what became known as the "Red Manuscript" (Regzig Marpo). This "Lesser Translation" is now enshrined within the brick stupa (Sopag Chörten) above Lhasa. Furthermore, it is said that dBas Mañjuśrī and Nyang Indra Rva ro both obtained texts from India and translated them. They mixed the ash of the Emperor's (Tsampo's) hair with white goat's milk to write a four-volume work known as the "Blue Manuscript" (Regzig Ngonpo). Since these two, the Blue and Red Manuscripts, did not fully elaborate on all the interpretive sections, Pagor Vairocana performed a major revision again, supplementing the missing interpretive sections and so forth. He extended the phrasing of the sentences, translating them to be more easily expressed and understood. At this time, the great Lotsawa (Vairocana) himself penned the *Prajñāpāramitā in One Hundred Thousand Verses* known as "Flesh-Winged Bum" (Bum Shagdro Chen), which is still enshrined in Chimphu (Chimphu), as the "Middle Translation." During the time of King Triral (Tri Ralpachen), it is renowned that Paṇḍita Surendrabodhi and others, along with the two Lotsawas Ka and Chog, performed a major revision, resulting in the sixteen-section "Greater Translation" (Bla 'gyur chen mo), as well as several other distinct translations. Likewise, commentaries such as Daṃṣṭrasena's *Tika on the Prajñāpāramitā in One Hundred Thousand Verses* were also translated. Through their kindness, the explanations and practices of the Prajñāpāramitā extensively flourished. Rinchen Zangpo established the tradition of explaining the *Abhisamayālaṅkāra*; Jowo Je (Atisha) also taught it to Khu, Drom, and Phywa; Especially the great Lotsawa Ngok made it flourish. During the later propagation of the Dharma, the great Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo traveled to the noble land (India), received the *Abhisamayālaṅkāra* and its commentaries from Paṇḍita Guṇamitra, and thereby first established the tradition of explaining it. The venerable Jowo Je Palden Atisha also skillfully bestowed the explanations of the Prajñāpāramitā upon Khuchenpo Lhadingpa and Dromtön Gyalwé Jungné. Atisha and the great Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo together translated the *Illumination of Difficult Points* (rtogs dka'i snang ba, i.e., *Abhisamayālaṅkāra Commentary: Lamp for Difficult Points*). Previously, there were many translations such as the *Eight Thousand Verses* (Aṣṭasāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā), the *Sunlight* (Nyi snang, a commentary on the *Eight Thousand Verses*), and the *Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses*, among others.
