Currently, the main prevalent commentary tradition of the Abhidharma-kośa is that when Paṇḍita Smṛtijñāna, a disciple of Nāropa, came to Tibet and gave explanations of the Abhidharma-kośa in Dan Longtang (丹隆塘) in Kham (康区), many scholars and monastics gathered, thus establishing the teachings of the lower Abhidharma. His disciples, including Gya Chenpo Sherab Drak (右钦波·喜饶扎), spread it throughout the three regions of Ü-Tsang (卫藏) and Kham (康区). Drangti Dharma Nyingpo (朗智·达玛宁波) received the lineage of both the upper and lower Abhidharma commentary traditions. His disciples were Rok Chökyi Tsöndrü (洛·却吉尊珠) and Gowo Yeshe Jungne (果沃·益西炯乃). The latter's disciple was Ben Könchog Dorje His disciples, including Thokgar Namdé (托嘎·南德) or Tho Künkhyen Dorje (托·衮嘎多杰), widely propagated it. Chim Tsöndrü Sengge (钦·尊珠森格) composed the commentary known as “Nag-jam” (《黑注释》), which was the first Tibetan commentary. Thereafter, many scholars, including Chim Namkha Drak (钦·南喀扎), Samten Zangpo (桑丹桑波), Chöden Rigral (琼丹·日惹), Redawa (热达瓦), and his lineage holders, composed and propagated numerous commentaries. Śākyaśrī spoke to Sa-Paṇ, including the close lineage; Causing the distinguished long tongue of discourse to sway. Paṇchen Śākyaśrī (班禅释迦室利) gave explanations of the Abhidharma-kośa to Sakya Paṇchen (萨迦班智达). (144b) Sa-Paṇ (萨班) had the extraordinary experience of hearing from Vasubandhu (世亲) in a dream for one month, thus becoming a close lineage, and thereby causing the distinguished long tongue of the commentary tradition's discourse to sway. In this way, regarding the Dharma to be explained, the Abhidharma, Gser-mdog Paṇchen (色摩多班禅) explains it by summarizing it into two parts: firstly, the Abhidharma of the expressed meaning, which is the higher training in wisdom with its retinue; and secondly, the Abhidharma of the expressing words, which is the scripture that teaches that meaning. For most Tibetans: In the Abhidharma-kośa, it says: Dharma, Abhidharma, undefiled wisdom, accompanied by its followers; For the sake of attaining that, what is it, and what treatise is it? The meaning stated is: the ultimate Dharma, Abhidharma, and the conventionally designated (Abhidharma). The first is: the undefiled wisdom that distinguishes the specific and general characteristics of phenomena, accompanied by the retinue of the five aggregates. The second has two parts: defiled wisdom and treatises. The first is: the wisdom born from hearing, contemplation, and meditation, the wisdom arisen from application, and innate wisdom, all of which are defiled. The second is: treatises such as the Seven Treatises of Abhidharma. Explaining its meaning, the Abhidharma-kośa's...

Also, the establishment of the subject matter of the treatise. All phenomena, defiled and undefiled, By what is said, they are appropriately gathered into the two aspects: the aspect of all defilements and the aspect of purification. The connection of the sequence is also that since those phenomena included by defiled and undefiled are also included by aggregates, elements, and sense bases, in the first chapter, the establishment of aggregates, elements, etc., is taught. Because the teaching of elements (dhātus) is predominant, it is proclaimed as the chapter on the Treasury of Elements. Similarly, because one enters and focuses on defilements and purifications through the faculties, the teaching of the faculties is the second chapter; the elements and faculties, being the nature of elements and faculties divided by realms, destinies, birthplaces, and so on, the sequence of arising of sentient beings (p. 145, top) endowed with defilements, along with dependent origination, and; the teaching of the world of container and contained, such as the manner in which the container is formed, is the third chapter; and since the infinite varieties of the container and contained are not created by another agent, but are produced by karma, the teaching of karma is the fourth chapter; and karma can be produced by those endowed with defilements, and it is not without them, therefore the teaching of latent defilements (anusaya) is the fifth chapter; and the purification of those defilements also depends on the completion of the path, through stages such as meditating on impurity, therefore the teaching of the path and the persons who practice the path is the sixth chapter; and entering the path and overcoming defilements is also done by wisdom, therefore the teaching of wisdom and its qualities is the seventh chapter; and since all wisdom relies solely on meditation, the teaching of meditation and the meditative attainments (samāpatti) endowed with its intrinsic qualities is the eighth chapter; it is said that the ninth chapter, called "Establishing the Person," comes as an adjunct to this very eighth chapter. Those chapters are explained by six topics: Number and characteristics are taught, Likewise, excellent distinction and compilation, Establishing proofs and being equally endowed, These six topics are thoroughly proclaimed. Thus. Among those, the number is: All phenomena, defiled and undefiled, It is said, and And those compounded phenomena also, The five aggregates, such as form. And so on. The characteristic is: Feeling is experiencing, perception is The nature of apprehending signs. And so on. Distinc-
