…took full monastic ordination. Twelve Sarvastivadin monks were invited from India. At one point, in order to test whether Tibetans could become monastics, the King requested the faithful minister Ba Tritse to take monastic vows. Bodhisattva (Shantarakshita) served as the preceptor, Danaśīla and Jinamitra served as the karma master and secret master. The other ten panditas completed the quorum, and thus (Ba Tritse) took monastic vows and received full ordination. His dharma name was Pal Yang (Glorious Auspicious). The King praised him as Ba Ratna (Jewel), and he became renowned by that name. Through meditation, he attained the five supernormal powers. Subsequently, Ba Selnang, Pagor Vairotsana, Nganglam Gyalwa Choyang, Ma Rinchen Chog, Khon Luwangpo Sungwa, Lasum Gyalwa Jangchub, and others successively took monastic vows, changing their names to Yeshe Wangpo and so on, and received full ordination. These seven individuals became known as the “Seven Awakened Ones” (Sad Mi Mi Dun), and they were the first group of monastics in Tibet. After that, the King, recognizing that Tibetans were capable of becoming monastics, allowed ministers like Shang Droma and about three hundred intelligent commoners to take monastic vows. Everyone obeyed the King's instructions, and the King and all his subjects revered the monastics as their foremost objects of offering. A great Dharma law was enacted concerning offering, prostration, and respect. A stone pillar of oath was erected. Among the Seven Awakened Ones, skilled learners like Kaba Paltsen and a hundred other translators, and among them, even more skilled learners like Chogro Lui Gyaltsen and a thousand assistants, along with countless emanated scholar-translators and monastics, appeared. After Darma (Lang Darma) suppressed Buddhism, through the lineage of Mar, Yo, and Tsang, The great Lama Khenpo and ten monks from U-Tsang, Revived the doctrine and widely established monasteries. When the patron Tri Relpachen's younger brother, Lang Darma Udam Tsen, due to the power of perverted aspirations, had his mind possessed by demons and suppressed the doctrine, the three disciples of Ba Ratna – Mar Shakyamuni, Yo Geyung, and Tsang Rabsel – carried one mule-load of Vinaya texts. They traveled to Garlok (Karluk) and Hor (Mongolia) but were unable to propagate the doctrine, so they went to Kham (Eastern Tibet). While they were meditating and residing at Malung Dorje Drakra (Malung Vajra Rock Cave), Anchung Namdzong (Anchung Sky Fortress), or Dentig Shelgyi Yanggon (Dentig Crystal Hermitage), Damu Uzed Labar went to visit them, developed faith, and requested to take monastic vows. Mar served as the preceptor, and Yo served as the karma master.

He renounced the world as a Ba-dpön (teacher/preceptor) and was named Shākya Gewa Rabsel (Shakya Auspicious Luminous). When he sought full ordination (bhikṣu ordination), as the required five bhikṣus were not met, he searched for Lhalung Pal Dorje (Lhalung Glorious Vajra) who resided in Lhalung for recitation. However, Lhalung Pal Dorje said, "I killed a sinful king, so I cannot come to complete the number. Nevertheless, I will find others and send them." Thus, he sent the Chinese monks Kewang (Jieguang) and Gyipan (Jipan), and the full ordination was completed by this assembly of five. From the Khenpos (abbots) and masters, he listened to the Vinaya (monastic discipline) for fifteen years. Later, he studied the Vinaya from Gorong Sengge Drak, Prajñāpāramitā (Perfection of Wisdom) from Kawa Öchog Drak, and heard teachings on the Dzogchen Semde (Great Perfection Mind Section) from Yudra Nyingpo. Even the later explanations of the Kunjed Gyalpo Tantra (All-Creating King Tantra) are exemplary in that they were transmitted through him. His enlightened activities were extraordinarily supreme, and his wisdom vast, so he was also known as Blachen Gongpa Rabsel (Great Lama Gongpa Rabsel). Five years after his full ordination, (folio 140b) Ngadag Yeshe Gyaltsen (Lord Yeshe Gyaltsen) and others, in order to restore the degenerated Dharma in central Tibet (Ü-Tsang), dispatched five individuals, including Lume Tsultrim Sherab from Ü (central Tibet), and five, including Loton Dorje Wangchuk from Tsang (western Tibet), to Kham (eastern Tibet). They received the three parts of ordination successively on a single mat, completing the "one-time full ordination" (chigdzog), and became learned in the Vinaya. This method of "one-time full ordination" and not having completed the ten years of "reliance" (brtan pa'i yan lag) after ordination, etc., indicates that this great lama was a Bodhisattva (byang sems mos spyod pa) who manifested aspiration. At that time, Mar, Yo, and Tsang (the three wise ones) considered him a special individual, and and that it was permissible to do so at such a critical juncture of the Dharma's flourishing and decline. Thus, they granted permission, and the holy ones also considered it to be without fault. Although Mar, Yo, and Tsang (the three wise ones) were present at that time, due to their advanced age, they said they could not personally serve as Khenpos (abbots) to nurture disciples, so they acted as Karma Acharyas (ritual masters). The Great Lama appointed Lume as Khenpo. The ten individuals from Ü-Tsang (referring to Lume and others) travelled north, becoming the guru and object of offering for the powerful ones (bstan po, meaning chieftains/rulers). Among Lume's disciples emerged the "four pillars" (ka ba bzhi), "eight beams" (gdung ma brgyad), "thirty-two rafters" (phyam so gnyis), and "one thousand and eighty smaller pillars" (dral ma stong rtsa), etc. This led to the fundamental restoration of the degenerated Dharma, and countless monastic centers were established in places like Lamo Rajel, Yerpa, Bared Tsangdü, and so forth. It is said that the Khenpo-disciples, the Geshe (scholastic) monks of Yamshüd alone, established four hundred and eight monastic centers. In this way, the entire land was almost covered by the monastic centers of Lume and his disciples, and daily, large numbers of ordained Sangha continuously increased, a lineage renowned as the "Lower Vinaya Tradition" (smad 'dul gyi rgyun).
