"We three—you, he, and I—during the time of Buddha Kāśyapa's (Ösung, 'Od srung, 'Protector of Light') teachings, became the three sons of the bird-herding woman (Bya rzi ma'i bu, literally 'son of the bird-feeder woman'), and made a vow to spread the Dharma in Tibet (Bod). However, the Emperor (Tsampo, bTsan po) was not yet born, and you had not yet come of age, so I have waited here for nine generations of kings (Gyalrab, rgyal rabs, 'Royal Lineage')." This statement, as recounted in the 'Ba' bzhed (Testament of Ba), is regarded as historically accurate by most scholars. --- ### 📖 Chapter 2: [How the Doctrine Was Established] Avalokiteśvara (Chenrezig Wang, Spyan ras gzigs dbang) incarnated as Songtsen Gampo (Srong btsan sgam po), Who built monasteries (Tsuklakkhang, gTsug lag khang, 'Roof-ornamented House') and established the great tradition of the holy Dharma (Damchö, dam chos, 'Sacred Dharma'). This is also as prophesied in the *Mañjuśrīmūlakalpa Tantra* ('Jam dpal rtsa ba'i rgyud): "In the land called Lhaden Yul (Lha ldan yul, 'Land of Deities') (Lhasa), Within the snow-capped mountains (Gangs can ri, 'Snowy Mountains'), A king named the 'God of Men' (Mi yi lha) will appear, Born into the Licchavī clan (Licchavī rnam)." And so forth, as prophesied. The fifth generation from Thori (Tho ri), Avalokiteśvara (Chenrezig Wang, Spyan ras gzigs dbang) manifested as a human lord (Mi rje), and the Dharma King Songtsen Gampo (Chos kyi rgyal po Srong btsan sgam po) assumed power at the age of thirteen. At fifteen, he invited the self-arisen noble statue (Rang byon 'phags pa) brought by the emanation bhikṣu Ākara matishīla. He commanded Gar (mGar), the Dharma Minister who was an emanation of Vajrapāṇi (Phyag rdor), to bring the authentic Buddha statues (Sangs rgyas dngos kyi zhal skyin) of our teacher at the age of eight and twelve (137 verso). In accordance with worldly customs, he took as consorts the wrathful emanation, the Nepalese Princess Bhrikuti (Bal mo bza' Khri btsun), and the emanation of Tārā, the Chinese Princess Wencheng (Rgya mo bza' 'Un shing Kong jo), famously known as a "lotus in a lake" (mTsho nang gi padma). When constructing the Tsuklakkhang ('Phrul snang gi gTsug lag khang) (Lhasa Jokhang Temple), encountering obstruction from non-human beings (Mi ma yin, 'Non-human'), the king and his two consorts (the three, father and consorts) retreated for a retreat (sKu mtsams mdzad) at the Phabongkha (Pha bong kha) palace (Pho brang) Marura (Ma ru ra) in Kyishod Nyangdran (Kyi shod Nyang bran) (Lhasa Kyishod Valley Phabongkha Marura Palace), performing a Yidam (Yi dam) practice, which brought accomplishment. As prophesied, at the vital points (Sa gnad) of the supine ogress of Tibet (Bod, modern Tibet) (Srin mo gan rkyal du bsgyel ba'i), frontier-subduing and boundary-controlling monasteries (mTha' 'dul ru gnon gyi gTsug lag khang) were built, and evil earth-enemies were rectified. The 'Phrul snang (Jokhang Temple) (Lhasa Jokhang Temple) and Ramoche Temple (Ra mo che) (Lhasa Ramoche Temple) and their supporting structures were erected. From India (Rgya gar), the master Kuśara (Ku sa ra) and the Brahmin Śaṃkara (Śaṃ ka ra) were invited; from Nepal (Bal po), the master Śīla manju (Śī la man ju); and from China (Rgya nag), the master Hoshang Yāna (Hwa shang Yāna), among others. They translated the Tripiṭaka (Sde snod gsum) and many tantric components (rGyud kyi cha lag), establishing the tradition of the Dharma (Bstan pa). Although formal teaching and listening did not occur, the king himself, through secret teachings (Lkog chos), bestowed great compassion (Thugs rje ch)...

Having received and practiced the instructions on peaceful and wrathful deities, it is said that before the seven awakened individuals had renounced worldly life, hundreds of yogis with matted hair, practicing the Great Compassionate Avalokiteshvara yoga, continuously appeared at Phabongkha (Phabongkha) in Nyagbran (Nyagbran). The teachings given at that time were compiled into a collection, forming part of the 'King's Testament' (Gyälpo Kächem), which was concealed in three treasure troves. It was later extracted from these treasures by the three accomplished masters: Ngödrup (Drupthop Ngödrup), Nyang Dag (Ngadag Nyang), and the teacher Shakya Ö (Tönpa Shakya Ö). This collection, now known as 'Mani Kabum' (Mani Kabum), is considered the beginning of Dharma in Tibet. \t\t\tThonmi created the script and grammar, \t\t\tFirst opened the great gate of discourse in the land of snows. \t\t\tThonmi Sambhota (Thonmi Sambhota), an emanation of Manjushri, was sent to India to study phonetics and script. (Based on Sanskrit) He composed eight treatises on the form and grammar of the Tibetan script, taking Indian script as a model. In the land of snows, where previously there was no proper discourse on what to adopt and what to reject according to the Dharma, from that point onwards, the great gate of sacred Dharma and proper discourse was opened for the first time. \t\t\tChapter 3, Third Part: [How the Doctrine Flourished]: \t\t\tThe ruler Tride (Tride), an emanation of Manjushri, \t\t\tInvited abbots and masters, and built glorious Samye (Samye), \t\t\tTranslated all sacred Dharma, and established a great monastic community for explanation and practice. \t\t\tThereafter, after five royal generations had passed, the ruler Trisong Detsen (Trisong Detsen), an emanation of Manjushri, appeared. He (recalled) the prophecy of his ancestor Songtsen Gampo (Songtsen Gampo), which was inscribed on a copper plate and placed in the ancestor's casket, stating: "During the reign of King Tride (Tride), a descendant in the fifth generation, the sacred Dharma will emerge." This prophecy came to fruition, and he conceived the idea of spreading the sacred Dharma. Thus, he invited the abbot Shantarakshita (Shantarakshita) from Zahor (Zahor). Shantarakshita established the eight-fold vows for some individuals and taught the Dharma in accordance with the ten virtues and eighteen dhātus. However, the malicious deities and demons of Tibet became enraged and created various obstacles. Consequently, as his previous aspirations and prayers matured, and as predicted by the abbot, the Guru Padmasambhava (Padmasambhava) from Urgyen (Urgyen) was invited. \t\t\tWhen the king was twenty-two years old, he laid the foundation for the glorious Samye (Samye). The land consecration ritual was performed by Padmasambhava (Padmasambhava), and the geomancy was carried out by Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva). It was modeled after the Odantapuri (Odantapuri) monastery.
