The path of Mantrayana also became increasingly widespread. When Magadha was conquered by the Turushkas, most of the scholars from the central land (Magadha) came to that region, and the doctrine (Buddhism) flourished especially there. Later, teachers like Pandita Banaratna, who were greatly kind in the manner of Mantrayana and were supported by the glorious Shabaripa, also came from that region to Tibet. Subsequently, a king named Basundhara appeared (135na). Although throughout those regions, the Vinaya, Abhidharma, and Mahayana treatises were extremely widespread, with the exception of a few, such as the Kalachakra and the Three Cycles of Garlands (Phreng ba skor gsum), the secret Mantrayana teachings had become exceedingly rare. Therefore, about two hundred panditas from that region were sent to places like Gro lding and to the south in the land of Khagendra, to the presence of great siddhas like Zhi ba sbas pa (Shantigupta), and were instructed to study the secret Mantrayana teachings, thereby restoring them once again. In the southern regions of Aryadesha (India), the doctrine also appeared vast and uninterrupted. Especially later, through the power of the blessings of the powerful siddha Zhi ba sbas pa (Shantigupta), in Khagendra and within the mountains of Abhig jey (Vindhya Mountains), the genuine doctrine of explanation and practice, with secret Mantrayana as its main focus, especially flourished and developed. And in some small regions of the southeast and southwest, scattered Sutra and Tantra doctrines are said to have remained until later times. Sixteen noble Sthaviras (Arhats) and other venerable ones will appear in the future, Having come, it is wished that they will spread the King's doctrine for a long time. It is said that in the future, when the human lifespan increases to six hundred years, the sixteen great noble Sthaviras will actually appear, initiating those with good fortune into monastic life and spreading the doctrine. It is also said that the noble master Nagarjuna currently resides in India, having entered into his former head and body, which were separate, and uniting and joining them, performs deeds for the benefit of sentient beings. Furthermore, (from this context and so forth), scholars wish that by the army of Kalki (Rigden Dragpo) conquering the barbarians (Kla klo), a new golden age (rdzogs ldan) will be established in the central region of Jambudvipa, and the doctrine will be spread, thus ensuring the Buddhadharma remains for a long time. This is the chapter on how the doctrine spread in Aryadesha (India). This is the commentary on the first chapter, concerning how the doctrine spread in Aryadesha (India). Second chapter: In the Land of Snows (Tibet), the Vinaya, the root of the doctrine, and the explanatory lineage...

Section recounting its origin. \t\t\tChapter Two: Explaining how the Buddhist doctrine arrived in the land of snow (Tibet) (135b), comprising three parts: 1. The foundation of the doctrine: the Dharma Kings; 2. The root of the doctrine: the monastic discipline; 3. Recounting how the lineage of explanation upholding the transmitted Dharma arose. \t\t\tThe first part (1) comprises three: 1. How the doctrine began; 2. How the doctrine was established; 3. How the doctrine flourished. \t\t\tThe first (1) is as follows: \t\t\tThe Dharma Kings of Tibet were of the Licchavi lineage, \t\t\tDuring the time of Tho-ri, the sacred Dharma first began. \t\t\tWithin the six great regions of Jambudvipa, in the land of red-faced Tibet (Khawa-chen), held by the noble Mahākaruṇika (Avalokiteśvara), at what time did the Buddha's doctrine arrive? From the Mañjuśrī-mūla-kalpa (Root Tantra of Mañjuśrī): \t\t\tIn the land of snow (Tibet), after the lake dries up, \t\t\tSāla forests will appear. \t\t\tAs prophesied, during a time when the initial lakes gradually dried up and dense forests grew, a monkey, blessed by Mahākaruṇika, came from Grudzun (India), and from its union with a rock ogress, the Tibetans (Bod-rnams) multiplied. This is recounted in old Tibetan histories. In the commentary on the "Praise Surpassing the Gods" (Devātiśaya-stotra-ṭīkā) composed by Acārya Śerab Gocha (Jñānāvarana), it is said: At the beginning of the degenerate age, during the time when the five Pāṇḍava brothers defeated the eighteen Akṣauhiṇī armies in battle, the king named Rūpati, along with one division of his army, disguised themselves as women during battle and fled, entering and residing in the hermitages of the snow-capped mountains (Khawa-chen). The Tibetan people (Bod-kyi mi-rnams) are said to have originated from their lineage, and many such accounts exist. In any case, this region was initially held by non-human beings (Mi ma yin). Gradually, human beings (Mi'i 'gro-ba) settled, and it was ruled by twelve small kingdoms (rgyal-phran bcu-gnyis) and fourteen minor tribes (sil-ma bcu-bzhi). \t\t\tThereafter, the first human king to rule over all of Tibet (Bod-spyi) appeared, Nyatri Tsenpo. Furthermore, it is established by scripture that these Dharma Kings (Chos-rgyal-rnams) originated from the Licchavi lineage; some say from the Sgra-ngan (evil sound) lineage. Others say (page 136) they were of the Śākya royal lineage, and some also believe them to be the sons of King Dmag-brgya-pa (Hundred Battles). Others say they were the five princes (Ngatsik) of King Prasenajit (Gsal-rgyal) of Kosala. Still others say they were the five princes (Ngatsik) of Stobs-chung (Weak Power), the youngest son of King Bimbisāra (Gzugs-can snying-po).
