As for the *Sutralamkara* (Mahayana-sutralamkara), it expounds all Mahayana doctrines by condensing them into five meanings; thus, it is a commentary on the intended meaning of the boundless Mahayana sutras, establishing the meaning of the twenty-one chapters, such as the Mahayana *Discrimination of Dharma and Dharmata*. \t\t\tAs for the *Lamrim* (Stages of the Path), \t\t\tFaith in lineage and Dharma, etc., \t\t\tIs explained in ten topics, and it contains various provisional and definitive aspects. \t\t\tAs for the *Abhisamayalamkara* (Ornament for Clear Realization), it establishes the hidden meaning of Prajñāpāramitā through eight topics and seventy points. \t\t\tAs for the *Madhyantavibhanga* (Discrimination between the Middle and Extremes), by means of the three natures of the expounded object, it differentiates the middle way that does not fall into the two extremes of imputation and denigration, and the extremes that do fall into them, thereby explaining the Middle Way path. \t\t\tAs for the *Dharmadharmatavibhanga* (Discrimination between Dharma and Dharmata), it explains all phenomena by dividing them into two: the phenomenal (conditioned) cyclic existence and the noumenal (ultimate) nirvana. \t\t\tIn the *Uttaratantra* (Ratnagotravibhaga), the essence of the Sugata (Tathagatagarbha) is primarily established through the seven vajra topics. \t\t\tSimilarly, the general Tibetan populace primarily interprets the meaning of the third turning of the wheel of Dharma through the *Sutralamkara* and the *Two Discriminations* (Madhyantavibhanga and Dharmadharmatavibhanga), teaching the Mind-Only view (125b). Likewise, it is said that the *Sutralamkara* balances view and conduct, while the *Two Discriminations* primarily teach the view, and there is no contradiction in *Abhisamayalamkara* being part of the Prajñāpāramitā section. \t\t\tAs for the *Uttaratantra*, the early Tibetans considered it a commentary on the intended meaning of the second turning of the wheel of Dharma, teaching the Svātantrika (autonomous) view. \t\t\tThe venerable Jetsun Drakpa, the incomparable Dakpo Rinpoche and his followers, also consider it a Mādhyamaka treatise. \t\t\tButön Rinpoche stated that it is a commentary on the intended meaning of the third turning of the wheel of Dharma, teaching either the Madhyamaka or the Mind-Only view. \t\t\tJe Tsongkhapa considered it Prāsaṅgika (Consequentialist Madhyamaka), while Nāgārjuna and others held it to be situated in Mind-Only, and there are various such disagreements. \t\t\tAs for the *Abhisamayalamkara*, masters such as Vasubandhu, Dignāga, and Śāntipa interpreted it as Vijñaptimātra (Mind-Only). \t\t\tĀryadeva, Jñānapāda, Abhaya, Atiśa, and others interpreted it according to the school that propounds non-inherent existence (Madhyamaka). \t\t\tMost early and later Tibetans considered it a commentary on the intended meaning of the second turning of the wheel of Dharma, teaching the Svātantrika (autonomous) view. \t\t\tJe Mikyö Dorje and Tsongkhapa, among others, held that it teaches Prāsaṅgika (Consequentialist Madhyamaka). \t\t\tThe Jonang Omniscient Dharma Lord (Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen) and his lineage, apart from minor and major distinctions, consider all five treatises of Maitreya to be Mādhyamaka treatises, and furthermore, most of them teach the view of the Great Other-Empty Mādhyamaka.

Therefore, this is the wish. The five sections are: the foundational ground and the four compendiums. Among them, the foundational ground of the stages is taught by condensing it into seventeen grounds. That very text states: The summary is: The ground endowed with the five consciousnesses, The mind-ground and the other three; Those with conceptual thought and analysis, and so forth, With samādhi and without; With mind and without mind, Endowed with hearing, contemplation, and meditation; Likewise, endowed with the three vehicles, With remaining aggregates and without remaining aggregates. Thus, these seventeen grounds are taught by taking into account the three aspects of support, activity, and result: The two grounds of the five consciousnesses and the mind-consciousness are the nature of the support; the three grounds, namely, with conceptual thought and analysis, without conceptual thought but with analysis, and without conceptual thought and without analysis, are the modes of engagement of the support; the four, namely, with and without meditative equipoise, and with and without mind, are the states of the support. In terms of activity, there are the three grounds of hearing, contemplation, and meditation. Regarding results: the temporary results are the three grounds of Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas; the ultimate results are with remaining aggregates and without remaining aggregates. Like a commentary on these is the Compendium for Ascertainment; the Compendium of the Bases teaches the way in which those earlier treatises are condensed into the Three Baskets; the Compendium of Enumerations explains the synonyms of expressive terms, or specifically elaborates on the synonyms of defilements and purifications; the Compendium of Exegesis demonstrates the method of explaining these. Thus, based on the meaning of the scriptures, the treatises, and the method of explanation, they are presented as five sections. Vasubandhu and others widely spread the teachings. Moreover, the *Mañjuśrī Root Tantra* states: Thereafter, the renowned one, A Brahmin from the southern direction, Will teach the first letter, And cherish the teachings of the Teacher. Residing in stūpa gardens, With a delightful image of a lamp, The land extending to the two oceans' ends, All will be adorned by him. This is a prophecy, referring to the great younger master Vasubandhu, for it is said that after the Teacher's (Buddha's) parinirvāṇa, there was no one as extensively learned as him, and he was universally revered by the Sangha of both Mahayana and Hinayana.
